Apparently it simply ran out of diesel on the highway. Somebody made a simple mistake.

Fascinatingly, these buses may be able to be converted to ultra fast charging at each end of the route, converting them from diesel (albeit efficient diesel) to almost 100% electric. Here’s the volvo press release:
