June 2015 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales Dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

Overall U.S. passenger vehicle sales for June were strong albeit less than May which was the best seasonally adjusted rate since July 2005, with a modest increase from last June.

The full electrics had a very good month and plug-ins did relatively well although down from May. Hybrid share is in line with recent months, except the stronger performance of May, and with diesel sales trailed the last two months.

Battery Electric Vehicles

Sales for full electric vehicles were up strongly for the month from year-ago due to strong sales from the category leaders, namely the Model S and the Leaf. Tesla had a strong month based on interest in and availability of the Model S P85D and the 70D. The last month of the quarter tends to be the strongest as Tesla reports their sales quarterly and work hard to provide results that meet the high expectations of those that follow the company. Leaf sales were mostly in line with last month, which is a relatively strong result given the fact that overall sales declined. BMW i3 volumes declined, presumably due to availability issues which may ease going forward. Growth in this segment continues to be ahead of the overall market by a significant margin.

Plug-in Hybrids

Plug in hybrids had a decent month, with the Volt behind last month, but ahead of all other months of this year. Production of the current Volt has ended, so sales are likely to be moderate until this Fall when the new model becomes available (although the national rollout will take some time). The Fusion and C-Max Energi are consistently following the Volt in this category. This segment has trailed the overall market all year, and the same is true for June. Prius Plug In sales are going to be low for the next several months as production of the current model has ended. It could easily be Spring or Summer of 2016 before supplies of the new model are readily available.

Hybrids

As goes the Prius family, so goes the hybrid category. The three Prius hybrids all declined from May’s higher (overall and hybrid) sales level. In June, the Prius Liftback did better than most months this year, albeit still below the strong levels of mid-2014. Both the C and the V slumped from the Spring, with the net result a moderate month for the Prius. Nissan has confirmed that the Pathfinder hybrid has been discontinued, although sales will continue for several months to sell off the inventory. A new Malibu will appear this fall and a regular hybrid will be a significant part of the model line. Since the Malibu is a mainstream product with strong volume, we expect the hybrid to be a major player in the segment. (Note that this product will be more appealing than the prior mild hybrid which did not have a strong benefit for the consumer given the extra cost.)

Eco Diesels

Diesel sales year-to-date are flat with last year, with growth in the Ram Pickup offsetting declines elsewhere. VW products continue to pace the category as they offer a variety of models and they are performing somewhat better than the overall category.
