July 2016 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales Dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

Overall sales for July were flat with a year ago and also flat from June 2016. Through the first seven months of the year, overall sales were up 1 percent from the comparable 2015 period. Thus, overall sales are strong but it appears a plateau has been reached. As compared to a year-ago, July sales were up significantly for full electrics and plug in hybrids. Hybrid and diesel sales were both down significantly. As compared to June, July sales were up for plug in hybrids and regular hybrids.

Battery electric vehicle sales were flat from June with strong sales of the BMW i3 offsetting the normal declines in the Tesla products which generally surge in the last month of the quarter and decline in the month following. Tesla sales were stronger than normal in July because an above average number of vehicles were in transit in June and sold in July. The Nissan Leaf continues to struggle. Even with the strong July, Tesla sales are behind their goals and sales will have to increase significantly for the rest of the year in order to meet their stated expectations. Year-to-date, the share of sales relative to total sales is consistent with last year at 0.42 percent. However, the July share is at a much higher level at 0.51 percent (which was consistent with June).

SEE ALSO: June 2016 Dashboard

Plug in hybrids were up from last month, and strongly ahead of year-ago levels on the strength of the Chevy Volt and Ford Fusion Energi. Year-to-date, those two models are well ahead of 2015 levels. The Volt had its strongest month since August 2014 based primarily on incentives offered by GM in early July. Chevrolet had a program for most of its vehicles (including the Volt) that offered 20 percent off MSRP for the first ten days in July. Clearly, this had an impact in increasing Volt sales and without incentives the higher volumes are unlikely to continue. That said, the Volt continues to lead the segment and will continue to do so. As noted previously, the Fusion Energi has been redesigned recently and thus volumes should be strong for the remainder of the year. A new model, the Mercedes GLE 550e plug in hybrid, has been launched although volumes are likely to be modest.

Hybrid sales in July were up almost 20 percent from June, although still down almost 10 percent from last July. The Prius Liftback had a good month although it is still down from year-ago and year-to-date. The RAV4 continues to sell well as does the Fusion Hybrid. Most hybrids year-to-date are trailing year ago levels, with the exception of the RAV4 (new this year), Highlander, Fusion, Lexus RX, Lexus NX, and the Malibu hybrid (which has launched anew based on the new version of the vehicle).

Although a settlement for some of the VW diesel vehicles has received preliminary approval by a California court (the 2.0-liter versions are covered, the 3.0-liter diesels have not yet been addressed), there remains no indication when VW will be able to sell new vehicles with diesel engines. The Ram Pickup EcoDiesel and the Transit diesel are pacing the category with other vehicles far behind. In fact, diesels in cars are present in only BMW and Mercedes products at this time. The Cruze diesel will return to the marketplace, but not until next year. If we exclude all VW Group products, year-to-date diesel sales are up 4 percent.
