July 2014 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

July was a good sales month for the market as a whole, although there was a modest decline from recent months.

Electric and hybrid electric vehicles also had a good month, again not record-setting but strong. Battery electric sales were only exceeded by May of this year (and then just barely). Hybrid sales continue to be below peak levels due primarily to modest Toyota Prius Liftback volumes.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles as a share of the total market were at 0.4 percent which is consistent with results of previous months, albeit not at record levels (as compared to 0.53 percent in October 2013). The Chevy Volt seems to have found a somewhat higher, steady level of 1,500 to 2,000 monthly. While still selling in modest volumes, the Cadillac ELR achieved a best-ever result of 188 copies.

Battery electric vehicles reached an all-time high in share (also at 0.4 percent) and just short of the record number from May of this year in volume (by 9 vehicles).

Among battery electrics, the Nissan Leaf remains the leader, although volumes declined from the record achieved in May (by 98 vehicles). The Leaf seems to be in a fairly steady level of 2,500 to 3,000 monthly sales. Based on recent information, we have modestly adjusted estimated Tesla Model S volumes for the last few months.

Nonetheless, sales remain steady and are of course down from peak levels since the product is being sold globally.

The Mercedes B-Class has been added as it is now available for sale. Sales of the Smart forTwo EV continue to grow, although volumes remain modest.

Among hybrid vehicles, the Prius Liftback is down from stronger levels of the past, but the Prius C and Camry both had very strong months. Ford’s hybrids had a modest month, with the C-Max doing reasonably well while the Fusion (a higher volume vehicle) fell from prior months. The Hyundai Sonata did very well and this hybrid sedan will continue before being replaced in about a year by an updated version (even as the non-hybrid version is being updated this fall).

SEE ALSO: June 2014 Dashboard

Diesel volume in July was up somewhat as compared to last month, although relatively unchanged from last July. We have sought Ram ecodiesel numbers but – with our apologies – we must report thus far have not been given them but expect to begin posting them eventually.

The Jetta and Passat (the category leaders) grew nicely from June, although they are both down significantly from last July. The BMW 3-Series diesel, the second-best mpg non-hybrid in the U.S., is selling well, with last month’s result of 1,705 setting a record.
