July 2009 Hybrid Car Sales Numbers

This month’s dashboard is an abbreviated “summer vacation” version. We’re keeping it simple and just reporting the sales numbers. Hybrid sales in July grew to a whopping 3.55 percent of the new car market—its largest market share ever.

Our information is based on hybrid sales as reported by the manufacturers. For each model, this month’s sales are shown compared to sales in the previous month and at the same time last year. We also examine hybrid market share by model and manufacturer.

    Thanks for getting this info earlier and earlier.
    I think an important green index would be average MPG of cars sold that month, regardless of hybrid or traditional.
    Although we see the hybrid numbers going up, we will probably even see an steeper climb of avg MPG accross all cars sold as people opt for that Yaris or Civic instead of a larger car.
    Is this info available anywhere?
    I think a true green concept would put a higher score on a more efficient tranditional gas engine over a less efficient hybrid. Just my 2 cents.

    I would also be interested in seeing some sort of historical overall AVG MPG chart over the last few years. Total auto sales or sales by manufacturer would be awesome.

    Anyone have this information out there or know where to find it?

    Congratulations to Ford! Fusion/Milan is number 2 in sales behind the vaunted Prius, and Escape/Mariner is number 3.

    Yes Fusion alone has overtaken Camry for #2 spot, while Escape has overtaken Highlander in the CUV segment. Congrats Ford.

    Insight has sold more than 10,000 units in Japan, while it could sell only around 2,300 units here. May be Honda should reduce the price of Insight to 19K, then the sales could go much higher.

    In Japan, Prius sells more than Corolla & Camry put together and its #1 in sales for last 3 months in a row while for the whole year, its #2 behind Honda Fit. Hybrids and Hatchbacks have come a long way, while in USA, CUV’s have overtaken SUV’s and Pickups in sales.

    For the first time, Hybrids have captured 3.5% in overall sales.
    Expect Hybrid sales to increase from August onwards when Lexus 250h hits the market. For now, there are 20 models of Hybrids.
