if enloop represents sanyo’s effort for quality batteries, this is a very good sign for the car battery industry and for consumers. I’m hoping Sanyo will bring breath of fresh air to the market just like enloop did.

First of all, rare earth metals aren’t that rare (it’s a chemistry term, like “noble gases”, not an economical one). Second of all, I haven’t seen any rare earth metal mines that are anywhere near as bad as this oil spill. Third of all, rare earth metals are only necessary for efficient permanent magnet DC motors. There are other fine choices for motors.
The Tesla Roadster, eBox, and Mini-E all use AC Induction motors which only use copper coils – which is 100% recyclable too.

Well, that’s all nice and good….but what about those rare earth metal mines here in the USA? Wouldn’t part of the equation of intelligent potential-futures involve domestic recapture of the mine to market supply chain? I mean ENTIRE chain, providing well paid employment to Americans?
