Pickup

For many alternative-energy vehicle owners, the full-sized pickup truck represents all that is wrong with the American vehicle: big, overpowered, and fuel thirsty. But the reality is that pickups are immensely popular—mostly because many Americans need the hard-working hauling and towing capacities of a truck. An entirely new generation of hybrid trucks hit the showrooms in 2009, but due to mediocre sales, General Motors discontinued its two-mode hybrid Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid and GMC Sierra Hybrid. Another super-efficient design that’s for now not sold to regular consumers, but only to fleets, are series hybrid conversions by VIA Motors. Perhaps these up-to-100 mpg full-sized pickups may eventually be offered to individuals, but meanwhile other possibilities are efficient small diesel-engined pickups, now and pending, and bi-fuel capable CNG/gas trucks may be a possibility as well.
