January 2011 Dashboard: Signs of Hybrid Upswing

The HybridCars.com monthly sales dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.
Sales of hybrid gas-electric cars started off 2011 with gains of 12 percent compared to a year ago. This bodes well for 2011—despite the fact that hybrid sales declined by 32 percent compared to December 2010. This monthly drop is not likely to continue moving forward, because automakers provided incentives to move consumers into the showroom in December to reach annual goals and January sales tend to decline as a result. In addition, higher gas prices, and expectations that they will continue to rise, has put fuel efficiency back on consumers’ minds.
The biggest sign of recovery is that Toyota—representing 70 percent of hybrid sales this month—enjoyed a 10 percent gain from year-ago results. Most of Toyota’s quality and PR problems faced in early 2010, which took a toll on the hybrid leader, are in the rear-view mirror. (Meanwhile, in Japan, the Toyota Prius gave up its leadership as the top-selling hybrid to the new Honda Fit Hybrid, now the least expensive hybrid in Japan at about $19,000.)
There were some apparent losers for Toyota, such as the Lexus HS 250h, which has been a solid seller. Sales of the luxury hybrid sedan fell by 75 percent compared to last month. That might not bode well for the upcoming Lexus CT 200h luxury hatch—but the drop could be explained by the possibility that Toyota limited volumes in the U.S. to avoid losing money on an unfavorable exchange with the Japanese yen.
Increased visibility this year for the Nissan LEAF and Chevy Volt ironically is likely to increase interest in other alternative fuel vehicles including hybrids and diesels, since price and the relatively modest availability of these electric cars may encourage customers to buy other products that still meet their interest in greater fuel economy. G.M. executives openly say that the Volt is intended to bring people to the Chevy showroom, where they might drive off with a Cruze or another more affordable fuel-efficient option. Production of these plug-ins are just getting off the ground, and sales are still counted in the hundreds.
In diesels, the big news in the coming year will be the Jetta and the forthcoming Passat. The Jetta has been redone—and priced downward to be more in the mainstream—and the Passat launching this summer will be similarly positioned. Potential volumes for the diesel engine are quite high given this change in positioning and the availability of their diesel engine.
2011 promises to be the biggest year ever for electric-drive and diesel vehicles—just in time for higher fuel efficiency standards that start to kick in in 2012.

Great to see the increase in hybrid unit sales from a year ago (Jan. 2010). Based on reporting here and elsewhere (with a slightly better economy, increase in the price of oil, impending increase in government mandated fuel economy) it should be a record sales year for hybrid vehicles. I predict 2012 and 2013 will be successive record years for hybrid unit sales as well.
I'll go on the record and predict hybrid sales will make up 3.3% of the total vehicle market in 2011, 4.5% in 2012 and 5.8% in 2013.
@JakePDX - I like the predictions. I'm with you! A percentage point or better every year for next several years--plus a point or so for plug-ins.

Where is Hyundai Sonata hybrid?
From Hyundai's press release: "Hyundai sold 4,792 cars (2011 Elantra sedan and 2011 Sonata Hybrid) with 40-mpg EPA fuel economy highway ratings, ..."
It reads as if Hyundai was selling 2011 Sonata hybrids during the month of January.

Hi Anonymous - How about redoing your numbers and include Toyota? Also for GM and Nissan include their plug ins and include the Mazda Tribute with Ford as it is an Escape...
BTW - I knew the CR-Z would be successful - it just looks too nice not to...
And for the Dashboard:
Only 1 Mercedes ML450, were there no Fiskars or Teslas sold in January?
Hybrid increase: 12.1%
All vehicles increase 17.2%
Doesn't this mean that Hybrids are actually losing ground?
I guess $3 is no longer an issue to the average american. Maybe $4 will be?

The 2010 Toyota Prius is a model of success when it comes to hybrid vehicles. They are generations ahead of the nearest competitor and will continue to dominate their class. The car is also very stylish ( http://www.2010-Toyota-Prius.com for reference ) and is coming down in price.
Great news that Fit (Regular + Hybrid) has overtaken Prius in Japan. Market needs competition. Now Toyota will launch the Package-I Prius. They need to launch it here in US too.
I am surprised as how come the Insight sold only 1,500 units when a base model for $18,200 is available. May be everyone expects a Cruise Control and without that, no one is buying. Honda should provide this atleast as an option.
Good that Leaf is also picking up. If someone learns how to fix a generator in Leaf to charge it for the return trip, it will be nice.

I told you:
Lincoln MKZ will overtake Lexus HS250h.
You get a lot bigger and high mileage vehicle with MKZ.
Remember, Focus Hatch 2012 is the only vehicle that has 22 cu. ft. cargo space and has 40 MPG and it can compete in Return on Investment with Prius on the basis of price & mileage.
Toyota has been fooling us by promising Prius Package-I and then dodging.
BTW, why the Toyota website shows only Prius-2010 and not 2011.
Bought Prius.
Looks like Hybrids are off to a slow start despite rising gas prices. The prices are very high especially in light of 40 MPG vehicles like Fiesta, Cruze, Elantra and the upcoming Focus.
Focus is going to be the biggest launch for Ford this year.
Its sold as 5 door hatch & 5 door wagon in Europe.
5 door hatch and 4 door sedan in USA.
This year will not be a smooth sailing for Hybrids.

No Mercury Milan or Mariner sales this time?
All stocks of Milan, Mariner, Malibu, Aura & Vue are sold out and thats why they are not listed.
Still there are 25 Hybrid models listed here. And just 1 model holds more than 50 % share. And 11 models have sales < 100 units.
I wish Insight sales go up. Seems Fit Hybrid is selling well in Japan.
Any idea as when it will go on sale in US and how much will it cost.
Even if it comes, there will be 3 Honda Hybrids in the same price range.

Can we add the Think City to the list of plug-ins? I know they are not yet really cranking out volume production, but they are delivering cars with final assembly operations in the US. Per their press release their first 15 cars in December 2010 were delivered to the State of Indiana. I also recall somewhere they said they were going to be opening up orders to consumers, while focusing on fleets.
I believe Think City is a Full EV. Yes it should be added in the list.
May be Flexfuel's should also be included in a separate list. There are more than 9 million flex fuel vehicles in US with another 11 million in rest of the world.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-02-04/toyota-prius-relinquishes-top-s...
Fit sold 14,873 units while Prius sold 13,711 units in Japan last month.
Its actually the combination of both Fit & Fit Hybrid and also this car has 50% share among Honda's sales in Japan.
It will be better if Toyota launches Prius-C first followed by Prius-V.
Why not Honda bring the Fit Hybrid to US to challenge the Prius.

@Shines:
I don't think Ford has a controlling interest in Mazda anymore. I think Ford treats its remaining shares in Mazda as marketable securities, which suggests Ford may dispose them anytime.

"Remember, Focus Hatch 2012 is the only vehicle that has 22 cu. ft. cargo space and has 40 MPG ..."
Ahem, have you forgotten the Prius? I think it should have similar cargo space, and much better mileage.
Furthermore, a fully loaded Focus hatchback is relatively expensive, without good mileage in urban driving. (Many may forget that urban driving - traffic lights, stop and go traffic [during rush hour], even if you live in suburb - will have the most impact [because it's the most inefficient) on your overall gas bill, unless you only travel something like 30 miles or more one way on highway with moderate traffic daily.)

According to the Bloomberg article linked above:
Sales of Prius dropped 39% y/y;
while sales of Honda Fit rose 14%.

With all the talk about Tesla, I'd like to see the Roadster numbers also. Definitely belongs on the US plug in chart

Rob In Cary, Mercury is no longer a brand. Ford dumped the brand last year. You won't see anymore Mercurys on the list.

"Remember, Focus Hatch 2012 is the only vehicle that has 22 cu. ft. cargo space and has 40 MPG ..."
Remember, the passenger room for Ford Focus is 90.7 cu.ft., only. It is actually smaller than a Corolla (92 cu.ft.), Matrix (94) or Prius (94).
I guess I'd enjoy more if the passenger cabin is more spacious, the cargo room is more of an occasional need, to me. If I am really in need of significant cargo space, perhaps I would look towards a small/mid-size wagon.

http://www.dailytech.com/FourCylinder+Engines+Continue+Rise+in+Popularit...
V4 engines have 64.5 % market share in cars and the share of V8 in light duty vehicles have dwindled to 20.8 %.
As more models get V4 only engine like CR-V and the future Escape, the V4 will gain more.
Infact even V3 & V2 could come in if range extenders have their way.

Prius 2011 has been launched and still the Package-1 (Base Model) is not available. Also they increased the price of Package-2 to 23K +.
http://www.toyota.com/prius-hybrid/trims-prices.html
I wish Insight sales go up or Honda launched the Fit Hybrid in US which gives 50 + MPG and affordably priced.
Expect Hybrid sales this year to remain flat as the 40 MPG vehicles could gain the market.

It's depressing to see sales drops for many cheap, quality hybrid models. Apparently, the people at Nissan and GM are winning the marketing battle for electric plug-ins vs. traditional hybrids--even though studies at MIT and Carnegie Mellon show that, for most areas of the US, plug-ins produce more emissions than standard hybrids because coal is the predominant power source:

Seems Fit Hybrid sold more than 7,000 units in Japan while Prius sold 13,711 units. Is it possible that Fit Hybrid alone could overtake Prius.
Why not Honda bring that model to USA to increase the competition.

"Remember, the passenger room for Ford Focus is 90.7 cu.ft., only. It is actually smaller than a Corolla (92 cu.ft.), Matrix (94) or Prius (94)."
Oops, I think Fit has 90.8 cu. ft. passenger room and 20.6 cu. ft. cargo room. How come a much larger Ford Focus has the same passenger room as a subcompact Honda Fit?

From Bloomberg: Toyota Motor Corp. may lower the price of its Prius gasoline-electric hybrid car in Japan as the brand image of the nation’s best-selling model changes, Nomura Research Institute Ltd. said.
Yes, Toyota should reduce the price of Prius and also offer Package-I in USA.
Remember, only 1/2 the electricity comes from Coal, other 1/2 comes from cleaner fuels like Gas, Nuclear, Hydro, Wind, Solar, etc.
In the last 10 years,
wind energy has increased 10 fold
solar energy has increased 35 fold.
Why are these guys linking EVs & Plugins to Coal.
Oil is lot more bloody and is linked to so many Wars & Civil Wars & Recessions. May be that guy has taken money from oil companies.
I agree - Honda should bring Fit Hybrid to USA - it has a lot more passenger and cargo volume than Honda Insight which is essentially important in USA.
Before linking Plugins to Coal, read this link
http://www.eia.gov/cneaf/electricity/epm/table1_1.html
Coal's share in electricity in the 1st 10 months of 2010 is just 45 % and it keeps going down.
Similarly Oil's share is just 0.9 % and is going down even more faster.
In 1970's the Oil's share in electricity was 25 %. US got rid of Oil and now other countries like Russia, Japan, Iran are following.
1 day, we will get rid of Oil in automobiles as well.
BTW, the share of Renewables (excluding Hydro) is 4%.

Interesting that the Prius is down so much on the previous month.
I found this article on Google. Is there a similar comparison for later in 2011? I'd love to see more recent statistics.
