They are “not” leeches. They are the every day users of Drupal. They do not “hardly matter”. They matter completely. They are among those who we work so hard on Drupal for, not just for the “elite developers”, but for Reverend Somebody who wants to raise support for a charity, and for Aunt Kindness who wants to share photos and videos of her niece with her family on another continent. If you go about “chasing the leechers away” you will do a great disservice to Drupal. These user’s behavior, which they couldn’t do any other way given the tools at their disposal on drupal.org, is bothering you, but it is not their fault. From your other reply above about only caring about what you get in return for contributions (and sure, thank yous are nice)… I don’t believe most other helpers in the Drupal community feel the same way. I surely do not. I help because I love Drupal, and because I want to do my part in making it something great for both “developers” as well as the regular every day users. And I help in the way I’m best suited to help, which like many, is not coding. If I’d been told “contribute code, or else”, then I may have sought out a different CMS.

Sorry but the whole issue here has absolutely “nothing” to do with the end users, and “everything” to do with providing the proper tools on drupal.org. Then, through properly educating the user-base about the new tools (and of course by making the tools fulfill the necessary functions and be easy to use), you will see the resolution to this problem come to fruition.

The issue of users contributing or not back to open source is completely unrelated. Regarding the Firefox example, I believe it would be difficult if not impossible for Firefox to fail (as in close up shop and quit, not necessarily fail in a market share sense). Like Drupal, Firefox is made by highly passionate people. Many are willing to sacrifice personal time, money, effort, and more for the the things Firefox stands for to come true in the future. Drupal is the same.
