Clean Diesel 101

The E320 Bluetec, the clean diesel-powered version of the Mercedes E-
Class, utilizes the automaker’s clean diesel technology—branded as 
“Bluetec.” It’s outfitted with a new direct injection V6 engine and 
an advanced exhaust after-treatment system. The result is fuel 
economy ratings of 26 in the city and 37 on the highway. The Bluetec 
is priced only $1,000 above the conventional gas-powered E-class. When 
the E320 Bluetec arrived in 2007, it fell short of meeting the 
criteria to become 50-state legal. The next version, however, will 
utilize urea injection allowing it to pass air standards in all 50 
states. That’s currently scheduled for 2009.
