Wow! I beat my old HCH record today

Created January 27, 2005, at 5:50 pm by Anonymous

I'm so exited about this that I wanted to tell you all.

Today I beat my old 68.3MPG record and parked it at no less than 69.9MPG.

This was done on my daily commute of 45 miles and included a fuel stop and a Blimpie sandwich stop.
I just couldn't get it over the hump of 70.
This is about 10MPG over what I'm usually getting this time of year.

Traffic was moderate but mostly favorable.

I'm just bust'in at the seams and I can say that it was one of the most exiting driving experiences I've had yet.

Must have been a fluke.
I'm back to the low 60's again.
Today I parked @ 63.8MPG.

The only way I can get over 60 mpg in my standard commute in my 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid is drafting behind big trucks, which is NOT safe or recommended. (Well, I take that back, sort of - I once got over 120 mpg coasting downhill from the top of Sonora Pass...but that's definitely cheating.)

C'mon, Georgia - you were drafting, weren't you? Or going downhill?

No, I wasn't drafting. When I first bought my HCH I tried it a couple of times but quit for the danger, and especially the few sand pits that developed on the hood.

Please let me clarify that the numbers I've posted are not tank averages, but individual trips of 46 miles.
My tank to date is 59 point something over about 400 miles. At fillup I usually calculate 55-58.
My commute is not typical. I work a shift that starts at 5:00PM in the city of Atlanta, so 80% of traffic is headed out. I get off at 1:00AM to vacant streets & highways.
50% Hilly rural highway, 45% freeway and ~3 miles very heavy city traffic.

I could go on & on with tips but in a nutshell:
1. Accelerate as slowly as practical.
2. Slow down going over hills & speedup on the other side
3. Keep the Instant MPG gauge above your current Average.
4. Pump up those mushy tires.

If anyone wants more tips I have tons.
Thanks.
