When a hybrid runs out of gas ...

I have a 2006 4wd Ford Escape Hybrid. I'm approaching 30 mpg and I'm happy.

But what happens if I actually run this thing out of gas? Can I keep running on battery until it goes dead? Assuming it's fully charged how far can I go? How fast?

Also ... can the point at which the engine starts be adjusted so that I run longer on battery-only just a tad longer?

I've run mine out of gas... twice. My escapades are well documented on these sites (GreenHybrid has a much better search function than Yahoo! groups).
