Uncomfortable headrest in 06 HCH?

Created May 10, 2006, at 8:17 pm by Anonymous

Do any other 06 HCH owners find the headrests really uncomfortable?

I just got my 2006 Civic hybrid, and for the most part, I love it. However, after a week of driving to and from work (1 hour each way), I'm finding the headrest very uncomfortable (even painful!).

The problem is that the headrests tilt forward, but are not adjustable forwards and backwards. Plus, they're quite hard. As a result, I start to get neck cramps from having to lean my head forward.

My solution so far has been to lean the seat way back, but that has its own comfort issues.

I'm surprised that I haven't seen many other folks complaining about this. Maybe I just have a sensitive neck!!

The same headrests are in my Honda Civic EX. I have had my car for less than two weeks and have terrible neck cramps. What can we do?

I actually like my headrests on my 06 HCH (they are a bit firm though). I find myself getting drousy if my head is tilted too far back or too relaxed. Now, at 6'0" I would really enjoy finding a new spot for that blasted park brake handle. I like to relax the legs a bit on long trips and the dang thing digs right into my right knee area.

I have no problem with the headrest. I tend to sit pretty upright though. I wish the seat was more comfortable in the lower back region though. That is where it is uncomfortable for me.

I agree, I just got my car 2006 Honda Civic EX on Friday and already hate the headrest. I knew it would be a problem when I test drove the car but I loved everything else about it that I figured I could find a solution.

I am searching on-line right now for a solution of something to attach to make up the difference in space from my shoulders to the top of my head.

I thought about going to a junk yard to see about head rests from other cars that might work.

Help if anyone out there has an answer (sharongrisham2001@yahoo.com).

Thanks!

Well, in the month that I've owned the car, I guess I've sort of gotten used to the headrests. I basically lean my seat way back (farther than I'd like to)...perhaps the folks that dislike the headrests prefer to sit more upright.

According to my local Honda dealer, no other Honda headrests will fit the new Civics. I have complained to Honda customer service about the headrests, not that I'm expecting anything to come of it.

Besides this one problem, though, the car's great! Can't beat 48mpg!

I just bought an 06 Civic Hybrid and am having mixed impressions of comfort to be generous. The emergency brake lever rubs against my right leg and the headrest angle is way off IMHO. The contour of the seat is way different from the headrest - it just doesn't flow. Since I was a cyclist my legs are a bit large but the headrest thing seems altogether unrelated to my dimensions.

Since I am downscaling from an Infiniti, perhaps my expectations are unrealistic but it seems a new car shouldn't hurt :)

I've had my Civic 06 hybrid for about 4 weeks. I also hate the headrest. I have taken the headrest off and turned it around backwards. No more neck pain, but I am worried about what will happen when the airbag goes off, and my head snaps back...So now I am trying a rolled up towel going down the middle of my back, and that seems to help. I've only driven a short distance like this. Joanne

I have the 06 (nonhybrid) and found the same problem with the head restraint. My solution was to get a seat cushion for the back. It gave me about a 1/2 inch clearance so my head isn't being pushed forward anymore. In the two days I've had the car it's the only thing I didn't like, but boy I really didn't like it.

Hehe I wonder if we have enough people complaining about this problem we can start a lawsuit if they don't do anything to change.
I have the new Toyota Camry 2007 and my neck hurt all day from 1 hour driving in the morning and 1 hour in the afternoon.
My friend has a Ford SUV with adjustable head rest (can tilt back and fort). Really comfortable.
Honda and Toyota, they have year 2007 models already and they haven't thought of putting a comfortable headrest in their cars. I think they want us to pay more for that in the higher models.

Hey, ME, TOO. We purchased an '06 Civic and I didn't feel at the test driving time that the headrest was a real issue. However, at this time, it is a REAL issue. After reading the other reviews, I just have to say AMEN. I tried turning the headrest around, but then safety is an issue. Maybe the backrest will help. I can't believe that is the only alternative. Meanwhile, I have to lean the seat back more than I want in order to sit fairly comfortably.

HELP! Did I hear someone mention class action suit?

PS. We have a '97 Civic which is totally comfortable.

I have the same problem with my Civic hybrid. I talked with a friend of mine who has a similar problem who is sldo a mechanical engineer. Our conclusion is that it is combination of two factors, one of which is often cited. The first is a driver height issue, which can be somewhat accomodated for with the adjustable height of the headrest. The second is a weight issue. Heavier drivers have more padding which requires the headrest to be pushed further forward to properly align their head with their spine. The people having problems with the headrest being too far forward are typically thinner individuals. With every thing else related to the seat being adjustable, why is the headrest angle not as well? This is what I call a design flaw. The only things I can think of to do about it are either finding some sort of suitable aftermarket replacement headrest or adding a seat cushion/plliow to adjust your height and push your back forward relative to the headrest.

I just test drove a 2006 Civic and the headrest problem is the first thing I noticed. The rest of the car filled our needs perfectly. I'm 5'6" and found it very uncomfortable. My 6'2" husband was more comfortable. When I sat in the Accord, I didn't notice the problem. Our accommodating salesperson tried putting the Accord headrest on the Civic, and that seemed to help quite a bit. There was no problem with it fitting into the slots and it has a slimmer profile than the Civic headrest. Purchasing an Accord headrest from the parts dept. might solve this problem.

Can we complain to Honda for a recall and get the headrest changed?

I am getting massive headaches on this headrest because it keeps on pushing my head forward. I cannot get my neck on neutral with the headrest.!!!!

This sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I called Honda Canada and complained about my Honda Civic Sedan LX's headrest. The headrest is pushing my head forward resulting in massive headaches.

Honda says there is no complaint about this before....

He documented my complaint and if 1000 people complain about this, Honda will take action.

Please call Honda immediately about the Headrest Protrusion Issue:

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one noticing this design flaw! While I didn't buy a hybrid, I did purchase the 2006 Civic Couple LX last June. The headrest didn't really start bothering me until a week after I bought it. It's really causing me pain in my neck! I contacted the Honda dealership and they said they can't make any adjustments because it's a safety issue. I was thinking of bringing the car into an upholstery shop and seeing if they will be able to bend the headrest back about an inch or two? Would that be advisable?

I have noticed that almost all new cars are coming with these terriable unadjustable forward tilting head rests. All the new mustangs have them as do the many of the new cars from Chrysler. The really do suck and make driving very un comfortable. The reason I heard manufactures are doing it is because it is suposed to reduce the chance of wiplash from a rear-end collision. Personally I would rather take my chances with wiplash than drive around with a stiff neck. I would imagine if enough people complaine the manufactures will eventually change them.

I hate the headrest also!!! Tilts WAY forward!! How on earth did they overlook this?!

I have my Civic EX 2 days now. The only thing I don't like so far is the headrests! I get a stiff neck within a few minutes of driving. The only relief I get is to stretch and move every few minutes and try to change position a bit. Was kind of glad to see that I wasn't the only person experiencing this.

Potential SOLUTION: Hope this fixes the problem for most of you. My wife has neck problems from a childhood injury. We sat in the '06 Civic in the showroom and although we loved the car, the seats with those headrests weren't gonna work. They were a non-issue for me but my wife who is smaller had a head tilt that made her stare at her shoes. Out of sheer desperation to make something happen, my wife got the idea to take out the headrest from an '06 Accord and put it in the Civic. Success. Problem solved. It's flatter, softer and further back. So, we tried to make a swap before buying in the sales contract but Honda won't go for that because of legal issues and does'nt recommend modifying their seat. We then went to the parts department and bought Accord headrests seperately. This was deducted pricewise from the the car price. You might not get an exact match colorwise, we have a grey interior and the headrests are charcoal but the black trim on the steering wheel and dash make it work. Hope this helps. My next idea is to put a bike handle foam grip on the parking brake. Haven't done it yet but I'm sure I'll be able to do something with that. Cheers!

SOLUTION cont'd: I realized there may be some needed details or questions...here's a bit more.

The headrests are about $75 each and are non-refundable or exchangeable. Avoid giving a VIN number when ordering so Honda doesn't cry fowl. Honda Canada told me a VIN number wasn't necessary and I didn't use one. Make sure the parts guy understands how important it is that you order right the first time. To make sure you're doing it right and it will work for you, you could do what we did and go to a showroom. Pretend you're shopping for one (or another one) and swap the headrests around so you are comfortable with your parts department purchase and see what the result will be.
Disclaimer: This worked for me. I did my research and dealt with the parts guy and my salesman to make sure we ordered the right headrests. You in turn will have to order carefully for best results. I highly recommend swapping them around in the showroom before ordering to see if it solves the problem for you.

SOLUTION disclaimer...one last thing. Understand that any modification can affect safety. Understand that you could be injured more severely in an accident should you modify the headrests. Although a great fit with Accord headrests...they aren't designed for the Civic. Understand that your insurance company or the other guy who hits you and his insurance company or both could also cry fowl should you get rear ended and suffer an injury. It all could happen. You decide what is best for you.

If anyone is interested, here is the Honda part number for the headrest that is compatible, which is from the Accord LX. It's two different part numbers depending on if it's coming from a Japanese made Accord or an American made Accord. The number for the headrest coming from the Japanese made Accord LX is 81140SDCA02ZC (sometimes known by number 8150906). The only color available that is the same as offered for the 2006 Civic Hybrid is Ivory. It is the identical Ivory color. The pattern on the fabric is slightly different, but in a rather unnoticable way (though I'm not that picky). For the Accord, I think it's also available in gray and black. Ciao...........Wendy

I have had my 2006 Honda Civic LX for about 3 weeks. I love the car, except for the headrest as well. My neck just can't handle it. I am short at only 5' 3", but I have to find a solution. I will contact my dealer about purchasing the headrests for the Accord. Honda really needs to do something to fix this.

I purchased a 2006 Honda Civic a few weeks ago and have had a terrible problem with neck ache/headache after driving it or riding in it for 15 min. I have NEVER had a neck problem before. I am normal weight and 5ft 3in tall.

Take a closer look at the forward angle design of the headrest and it is obvious why this is bothering us. The headrest is way out of alignment to the back support.
I have tried tilting my seat back, raising my seat and headrest higher, etc. to no avail. Turning the headrest backward is just too unsafe.

My dealership told me they have no record of any complaints and it is up to me to solve the problem on my own because "that is the way the car is built and the company won't let us modify." I was told to call Honda Customer Relations 1-800-999-1009. Honda said they had never heard of this complaint before.

Honda definitely needs to redesign this feature and in the meantime provide a free aftermarket SAFE fix for their bad design.

Even though I didn't have my VIN they looked me up based on my name and zip code and documented my problem. They also recommended that I take it to my local Honda dealer. Please call 800-999-1009 to complain about your headrest.

I just got a brand new 2007 Honda Civic. I love everything about it---but the headrest. I didn't notice it during the test drive, but after 1/2 hour, I realized there was a serious problem. If Honda doesn't provide a headrest that is comfortable, and I start getting neck problems, perhaps it's time for a lawsuit on medical injuries.

Well I guess I am in good company. My wiffe and I went to test drive an 07 CRV. After a twenty minute test drive we were both in pain! We loved the vehicle but, we will not buy it with this issue. I am going to call Honda (1-800-999 10090) To complain and let them know they lost a sale. ?We have an 03 Pilot and there is no problem as the headrests are not forcing the head forward. By the way if you turn the headrests around, it looks really stupid and in the event of a crash yoiu have no real protection. A friend of mine just purchased an 07 Hyndai Santa Fe and has the same complaint. The whole industry needs to wake up to the problem. I also have a 05 Ford 500. I had to turn the headrests around for the same reason. Do whatever you can to get the word out.

Found the same problem with my week-old '07 Sonata. I can't stand it. It's very comfortable when I remove the headrest, but I wouldn't want to drive without one. My wife reclines more when she drives, and doesn't notice it so much. Seems quite a few newer sedans 'feature' a similar problem. Going to see if any auto customization shops can either modify the existing headrest (scoop out some of the foam and/or change the angle) or provide an aftermarket headrest. I know there are plenty of options if you want a new headrest with a built-in DVD player ...

My wife and I went to the dealer to purchase a 2007 Civic a few days ago. I'd done all the research but not yet taken a test drive. Good thing we drove before purchasing. The headrest pushed my wife's head so far forward her chin nearly touched her chest. She's 5'3'' tall. At 6' the problem was not nearly so bad for me but still slightly uncomfortable. The salespeople at the dealership acted as though they'd never heard this complaint before. Based on all the postings I've subsequently seen on this Website, it looks like Honda is well aware of the problem. Bottom line is we didn't buy. Seems like Honda would want to correct what appears to be a basic design problem. I wrote a letter to customer services, for what it's worth. However, I won't be buying a Civic any time soon.

Yes, we must stay vigilant! I am a yoga teacher with a straight back, and am getting punished for my good posture. Reading all the mail with complaints about the headrests makes me cry. What is even more annoying is that sales people as well as the higher-ups at Honda act as if I were unique with my complaints. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to read these complaint letters and know that many other unaware buyers are now stuck with a design flaw.
I am someone who usually can make things work. When I felt the discomfort in my back during my 2 mile test drive, my first reaction was: I love the car, somehow I'll find a way to tweak the head rests. Well, the rest is history, no such luck.
Someone wrote that if Honda gets 1000 complaints, they will act. Let's speak up! In the meantime, I warn my friends to stay away from the new Honda Civics, unless they are slouches.

I thought there was something wrong with me or my neck till I read everyones posts. I so think they need to do a recall on all Honda cars and SUV's that have this problem. The head rest in my Honda Pilot is far forward like that and I have to lean my seat back to make it more confortable but I still get neck pain and head aches. I think I will type something up and send it to Honda Canada. I have been very depressed about all this and it is not fair for us that get the lower priced LX model to have to suffer neck pain and headaches because we didn't buy the pricier model.

This is a problem that goes way beyond Hondas and hybrids. For years, I drove a SAAB 9000 with an added backrest that abolished any lateral support the seat once had and insulated me from the seat heaters, just so I could hold my head up straight. My Subaru Forester was somewhat uncomfortable until I unzipped the upholstery and used a hot knife to carve away about one of the four inches of padding behind my head. The Ford Focus I looked at the other day had a steeply-forward headrest. Only my wife's Golf gets this right, with height and angle adjustable over a wide range.

I think this is a problem caused by singleminded application of safety standards. For the best crash test results, we'd all be strapped in like astronauts, our heads immobilized against headrests. But that's uncomfortable driving a car, because you'd feel every bump in the road without your neck's natural flexibility (The Final Shock Absorber, I call it). And dangerous, too, because you can't turn your head and see.

Meanwhile, American drivers are getting fatter. Many older (and younger) persons slouch their heads and shoulders far forward. I bet they're starting to make crash test dummies with this faulty posture, too. My upper back's as straight as a solidier's- that's not a boast, it's just genetic-- so I don't need the headrest swept foward, but Joe Slouch probably does. To save him, my posture has to be mechanically altered?

I DON'T WANT HEAD "RESTS"! I want head restraints, to catch my coconut in emergencies only, please!

MSantos says:

As the previous poster wisely pointed out, this is not a Honda problem at all. If you wish to complain about the head rests in our cars, PLEASE DO THE RIGHT THING, and contact your State or Regional representative. Also, you may want to contact the government agencies that perform the safety evalutions and issue the safety reports. They will kindly record your complaint as they are supposed to.

Companies like Honda (and many others) are applying these designs to comply with safety recommendations and mandates.

I repeat once again, that Honda and other manufacturers WILL NOT change the head rests regardless of how many people complain to them. The only resonable avenue is to introduce a legislative challenge that allows the manufactureres some allowance in their designs. For that, you should exercise your tax payer rights and let your representatives know what you think.

Cheers;

I just bought a 2007 Civic yesterday & I didn't notice the headrest being a problem. As I was driving around today, I did. I'm a 5'1'' female and love the Civic but the headrest pushes my head down and kills my neck. Too late now...after reading the postings, I understand there's nothing the dealership can/will do. I don't want to use non-factory headrest for fear of losing my insurance coverage.
SO.....I had some foam in the basement. I cut the foam into a wedge shape. I placed the thin part of the foam at my lower back & the slightly thicker part of the foam came even to the shoulder of the seat. This pushed my upper back slightly forward enough so I can't feel the headrest immediately on my head but it's still there. I still get the support from the seat on my lower back too! I will go buy a seat cover & position the foam under the seat cover to hide the thick foam. You can go to any fabric store & they will cut you foam how you want it. This is a side view of what the foam should look like: l\ Questions, please let me know. Otherwise, good luck!!

I have owned a 2007 Civic GX for two weeks and each day I drive my brand new car, I get a splitting headache. I have contacted the dealer and American Honda and have only been told that the car cannot be "modified" i.e., replace headrest, since that violates the NTSB safety rating of the car. Currently, I have taken to driving to work with a sofa cushion between my back and the seat. I am thankful that this is a topic on your hybird website so I feel in good company with my complaint.

I got my Civic Exec June 2006 as my company vehicle and hadn't noticed much about the seating position etc. However, just about a year after having the car I started with a trapped nerve in my shoulder / neck. This has caused me to have time off work and I am just amazed to read your posts as I have never suffered from any form of back/shoulder/neck problems in the past and can only think that its related to the seating position. I am off work at the moment with chronic pain and have been having acupuncture. I too find having time off work from a busy job even more stressful so it adds to the tenseness and the severe pain....not sure what my next course of action is but am going to call my nearest dealer to discuss..

We strongly considered buying the 2008 Civic - until we test drove it. The headrest forces your head forward and causes neck strain, and the hard sharp edge of the headrest is simply uncomfortable to begin with.

If your shoulders do not comfortably connect with the seat back because you have to lean forward slightly to ease the headrest discomfort, you could get a different kind of whiplash injury in a crash - one that affects the lower neck or upper back rather than the upper neck area.

My story doesn't involve a hybrid but this was the most thorough post on this topic...

I was so excited about buying a 2008 Honda CRV. Within twenty minutes I had a splitting head and neck ache. I am 5'2", 115 lbs. and also do yoga and have straight back posture. OK great, whiplash injuries are decreased by 17,000 but headaches and neck stiffness are increased by double??! Rude and unfair rule to thin people!!! I didn't buy the car because of the headrest and I'm feeling disheartened/claustrophobic about the possibility that one day I may be forced to drive that way if the standard moves across all makes/models.

I'd so much rather take my chances with a mild case of whiplash than have my head snapped off backwards because I pull the darn head restraint off!

I'm going to contact the government, but looking for congress to re-inject common sense seems like such a contradiction in terms. big sigh...

Thanks for everybody's posts! I was afraid I was crazy or overly picky about my seats! '08 Altima Hybrid - love the car but.... I was having leg pain from the seat bottom (a problem I have had before in other Automatics) PLUS a great pain in the neck from having my head pushed forward by the darn headrest! I bought a memory foam cushion for the seat which has allowed my lower back to relax and fixed the leg problem for the most part - and I just turned my headrest around this morning and I think that may help with the neck pain! It is sooo depressing to spend all this money on a new car and not feel totally happy to be driving it! I had a 1999 Maxima 5-speed before this and I spend a lot of time in my car and I could drive for hours without any of this pain. I'm glad I'm not alone in this - hopefully I will find a solution with a replacement headrest or a replacement seat since reading this a replacement car is NOT the answer! 6'0, 160lb.

I'm not skinny by any stretch of the imagination, I do yoga, and have excellent posture (ballet training in my early years) and my headrests are uncomfortable as well. LOL

Seriously, I removed mine on the front seats until my husband told me I might get my neck snapped in an accident. Reluctantly, I put them back.

The ones in the back seat will remain out. They block my vision when I'm trying to back out.

I first noticed this problem when I test drove a subaru empreza. I had not just a neck ache, but a piercing head ache within ten minutes of driving the car.

Some time later I test drove the new small Volvo C30 and the same thing happened. I asked the sales person who was in the car with me car about it and he said that many people had been complaining to him about the forward jutting headrests. ...

On a trip to california we rented a dodge charger and... same problem. We had to turn them around to be able to drive the car.

My brother whenever traveling on business had to turn the headrests around on the Chevy Malibu that he rented.

My dad just bought a 2008 prius and the head rests are intolerable. We are actually considering returning the car. The dealer offered to take the car back due to our dissatisfaction. And they commented that we are not the first to return a car for this reason.

If you go to

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/rulings/HeadRest/update/202FinalRule...

you can see the DPS rule that has made all this insanity come about...
go to the section titled

1. backset Requirements for Front seats

Within this very document is car manufactures own complaints that jutting the headrest forward will not significantly, if at all, reduced the number of whiplashes per year. And that the older versions work fine.

I contacted my salesman (Bloomfield Honda in Michigan) and he stated that he has had lots of complaints and the only thing he could recommend is to turn the headrests around. He also said I could go to a junk yard to find some replacement headrests from a previous models. This is unacceptable. If I wanted to go to a junk yard I would have purchased a used vehicle. Folks, stop describing in detail how much your neck hurts. We know: that's we we're all participating in this forum. The real problem isn't mandates, as previously stated, since there are no mandates currently in effect for head rest position. The problem is safety testing performed by the IIHS and the NHTSA. Those organizations started testing whiplash-protection only a few years ago and now all the manufacturers are finally catching up. Honda was one of the first, which speaks well to their commitment to safety. My complaint is Honda's commitment to safety at the expense of comfort. Those two features are not mutually exclusive. I'm sure the smart engineers at Honda can find a nice compromise. But it'll take (at least) 1,000 complaints. Please call the 1-800 number shown above.

My wife and I just purchased a 2008 CR-V and like most people like the vehicle very much.......ACCEPT FOR THE FRONT SEAT HEADRESTS. While they may be Honda's answer to a headrest safety issue, they are sooo uncomfortable that my wife simply pulls off the headrest and throws it on the floor. The Honda engineers need to use a bit of logic: if their headrests are so uncomfortable that people turn them around or discard them, they are TOTALLY WORTHLESS in protecting the head & neck. Honda badly needs to do a very quick redesign to the headrest and supply them at no charge to the unhappy CR-V buyers.

I test drove the 2008 honda accord and hated the headrest. I'm short so maybe that made it worse. Are there are model cars like the honda without this headrest issue?

I believe this is no longer a Honda problem, but evidently a federal mandate on all 2008s to have the headrest angled in this manner.

Petition your congressmen.
