Toyota Down on a Plug-in Prius

Created July 8, 2004, at 12:45 pm by Anonymous

There's been a lot of talk about whether or not Toyota is developing a plug-in option for the Prius. Some of that is covered here:

In late June, Toyota released a press release dispelling the notion. Here's a link to the release:

And the relevant quote regarding plug-in's:

Quote:
Why doesn't Prius offer a plug-in option so it can run in electric-only mode?

Great efforts went into making hybrid cars so they DON'T have to be plugged in. If a car is converted, it will have a negative effect on the life of the batteries and the reality is that it's likely the grid electricity being used is derived from coal, so there's not much, if any, savings to the environment. Additionally, the electric-only mode would be good for less than a mile at low speed, so the practicality of it is very limited

Thanks Bradley. That's good to know.

Do you know anything about an auxilary plug for electricity on the Prius? Some hybrids have them and they are just like the ones on some conventional cars. They are just like an extra cigarette lighter.

Thanks!
