suddendrop in mileage
Created August 11, 2007, at 3:11 pm by Yuni Roh
hi guys,
i purchased a new 2007 HCH and have driven about 16,000 miles now. for the last 3 weeks, the mpg has dropped significantly from 45 mpg to 32 mpg. the only change that i had is the distance i drive everyday. i used to drive 100 miles per day, mostly on freeways, and now i drive around 20 miles a day, but still on freeways. i wonder what the problem could be. i contacted the dealer and they said to bring it in but they will charge $95 for diagnosis. any advice? thanks in advance.

Do any of the following (or combination) ring true:
1- High temperatures. Use AC? In what setting?
2- Low tire pressures (40 psi in the front and 38 in the rear is a good start). How are they?
3- Fuel formulation. Do you fill at same gas station/brand regularly?
4- Recent oil change? Did you use the 0W20 or something different?
5- Have you had a recent software update performed on any of the systems?
6- Changes in the average speed and accelerations?
Shorter driving distances will net you a noticeably poorer mileage. This is true for any car, not just the HCH. 20 miles distance should be enough to get a better FE than what your report.

I have here some update about my car, Honda...I hope this might help and give some ideas...=)Also, base from your problem on your car, you might as well consult your dealer before it gets worst...
Here it goes...
The new, 2007 Honda CR-V is more powerful, more stylish and more comfortable than the previous-generation 2006 models. Its new suspension geometry delivers an improved ride and better, more responsive handling.
The engine, still an inline four cylinder, employs variable intake valve timing to optimize horsepower and torque for acceleration and cruising speeds. The transmission is a new, five-speed automatic. Real Time all-wheel drive is offered on all three models. The U.S. EPA rates the front-wheel drive CR-V at 23/30 city/highway miles per gallon and the all-wheel drive at 22/28.
Thus, buyers looking for peppy performance, snazzy styling and easier financing have better choices. Its Honda fuel filter and other accessories like Honda car bra in their excellent condition...But for Honda loyalists looking for something better than their current CR-V or an SUV to step up into from their Civic, the '07.

Hey Hondbrid,
Ok, your commercial for the CR-V is out in left field. The CR-V is a fine car, but this is a hybrid forum. Not only that, but you posted it in two different threads, both in hybridcars.com.

Maybe go find a small suv forum?

the samething happened to me after an oil change. My MPG dropped by 10 to 15%. It stayed that way until my next oil change 10,000 miles later. I spacifically told them about it and they said they always use the right oil. I requested my Air Filter changed and asked to make sure they used the correct OIL and when I got it back, not only did my MPG restore back to what it was, but it went up by a few miles. I think maybe due to a clean air filter or something. Hope this helps.

I noticed same when weather got colder in NE. Milage returned in spring. Maybe combination of car control functions and or fuel formulations. Definitely temperature affects. Now at 30K+ milage has improved a bit so neat to actually buy a car that gets better than advertised. BTW 06HCH

I am a bit disapointed, I am leasing a 2008 HCH since march 2008, I have less then 3000 miles and my overal MPG is under 39!!. My daily commute is 50miles most of it freeway. but I noticed since this last 3 weeks an average of 34-35 MPG! it goes down real quick when stuck in traffic! but quite a while on the freeway to go back up to 37-38.
The best I got out of it is 44MPG on a 130 miles freeway trip.
My oil is at 70% still! I find this quite lower then what was advertised Honda claims 40-45!! would 40 MPG not be the minimum average!???

These cars have very tight tolerances in the engine and require a long break in to reduce friction to minimum levels. Your car is still not broken in ! I would think you will notice a difference after 10,000 miles (16,000 KM).. read the tips on this site on how to improve your MPG. Cheers.....Don

Hi Matthew:
You'll find those tips in many threads in this forum and while you are looking for them I suggest you bunker down and read Tarabell's article. This is a "biblical" MUST READ for every HCH-2 owner. You'll find it here:

Also, let us know if you have any questions. :)
