Watkins Glen, NY April 4, 2006 The 2nd Annual Green Grand Prix will be held in Watkins Glen, NY on June 2, 2006. The Green Grand Prix features a road rally of Hybrid and Alternative Fueled Vehicles (AFV) held on an 84-mile course following the perimeter of beautiful Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The road rally is sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America and will bring together Hybrid and AFV owners for a fun and exciting educational event emphasizing fuel economy. By holding The Green Grand Prix rally the same weekend as the Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix; we will increase public awareness of environmentally friendly vehicles and to offer another activity for visitors coming to the area for the race.

Vehicles and sponsors for entries in the rally are being sought from individuals, non-profit organizations, small business and corporations. Rally participants will be served lunch at the end the rally and there will be a public panel discussion on hybrid cars and AFV’s at the Watkins Glen Motor Racing Research Center.

Following the panel discussion, rally cars will parade to Watkins Glen State Park parking lot where trophies will be presented and cars will be on display. There will also be an AFV poster contest for local public school children with posters on display and trophies awarded to winners of the contest. Proceeds from the rally will be donated to Seneca Lake Pure Water Association.

The Green Grand Prix is the brainchild of Robert Gillespie an area artist who is a hybrid car owner and is very passionate about increasing awareness about the vehicles. Last year’s event was a huge success and very well received. “There are a lot of misconceptions about these cars and my hope is that by holding this event we can share information and show people what a tremendous alternative these vehicles offer.” Gillespie said. “We would like to make this an annual event that can grow each year.”

About Robert Gillespie: Robert is a career art instructor, free lance painter/graphic artist in the area since 1972, hundreds of his drawings of the Finger Lakes region and its history have been published. He is a member of the American Automotive Artists Society; his recent paintings of Watkins Glen racing history not only capture the details of the racing cars, but the action and excitement of each event. Hybrid gas/electric cars and Alternate Fueled Vehicles (AFVs) have caught Gillespie’s attention, as they have appeared increasingly on the road and in the news. Interest in this new breed of vehicles has also rekindled this artist / educator’s environmental awareness, resulting in his organization of the “Green Grand Prix”
