Scangauge For The FEH
Created December 26, 2005, at 4:49 pm by Anonymous
As posted on GH, Scangauge is now designed to work on Hybrids and the FEH. This is a gauge that plugs into a connection above your brake pedal that reads information from your PCM. Check out
scangauge.com for details because it has to many functions including coolant temp for me to mention. The cost is $129.95 which includes shipping. I just
ordered one Sat. and hope this can improve my mileage.

I checked out the website and downloaded the manual, Gary. It's definitely interesting, but I'm just not that much of a gimmick freak. {grin}

Gary,
When you get the Scangage, see if it gives the same data as the readout on the FEH LCD. Here is something I posted earlier about the LCD readout:
Here is something interesting to try on the FEH. Hold down the trip odometer reset button and turn the ignition switch to the on position. You will see "gage" on the display and the instrument panel will go through a guage test. Keep pushing the reset button and you go through many different items on the display. One is a bulb test that lights all the icons on the instrument panel. Other items are readouts of voltages and temperatures, I think.

Gary,
This article indicates that some of the Scangauge functions still do not work correctly on hybrids. Do you know if the problems have been corrected?

I took another look at the items that can be displayed on the LCD when you put the FEH in the test mode. You do that by holding down the trip odometer reset button while you turn on the ignition key. There are 63 things that get displayed and you push the trip odometer reset button to step from one to the next. It appears that DTCs (Diagnostic Test Codes) are displayed so we will not have to buy a tool just to read the codes. Here are the items I have figured out:
1 gage Tests the instrument panel gauges
2 LCD test Tests the right side LCD
3 LCD test Tests the left side LCD
4 bulb Tests the bulbs in the instrument panel
15 dtc Displays DTCs (mine flashes "none")
18 t Displays engine RPM
23 Et Displays engine temperature in degrees C
24 bt Displays battery temperature in degrees C
26 tr Displays trip odometer reading in 1/10 miles
28 bat Displays 12V battery voltage
33 door -C if doors closed, -A if drivers door open
35 Prnd Shift lever position 46=P, 36=R, 32=N,
28=D, 14=L, FF=between positions
60 bat Displays main battery voltage?

Jay, I talk to Ron last week for the first time to ask the same question about Hybrids. If your Hybrid uses CAN like the FEH, the Scangauge has been updated for EV use. Ecel (Wayne Gerdes) called Ron to get a more techical update on other Hybrid models. Here is his reply on GH.
Hi GaryG:
___Thanks for the phone number. I spoke with Ron for ~ 5 minutes to get the scoop so to speak. He did remember your conversation with him about the “Low Gear Advantage†in the FEH
___Because many automobiles today use an ISO bus (in the near future, all will be using CAN), they need 15 - 20 seconds to reinitialize the data feed after a FAS. The Scangauge can hold the last known Fuel consumption for a given speed but it has to hold that same fuel consumption over that previous speed until the bus is feeding data again. That means if you were traveling at 60 mph w/ a 1.5 gph fuel flow, it would hold that same speed and fuel flow even though you are using 0 gph and slowing to lets say 50 mph over that 15 to 20 seconds. It simply cannot record Fuel consumption over a given distance until the ISO bus is reinitialized. This is really bad for us using the older automobiles
___With that, the CAN bus based automobiles can reinitialize in < 1 second so there is only a very short interruption in data feed and your FE shown would still be very close to actual. Your FEH has a CAN bus so you are good to go …
Jay, you are correct about the Dash readouts but my understanding is the Scangauge does alot more. I'll try to keep you up to date when I get mine and see. All I can do is give one opinion and how "I" would find a use with it. It will also be used in a number of non hybrids my family drives so one savings at the dealership will pay for thing.

Gary,
I definitely agree on the Scangauge being a lot more useful for geting real time information that will help you improve gas milage. Stepping through the LCD is only for diagnostics but it looks like you can leave it on one of the readings and monitor while driving. I think we will be able to read out the diagnostic codes without the extra expense of something like Scanguage and I hope there will also be a way to reset the codes. I will probably let Ford do any repairs on the FEH but I want to have a good idea of what is wrong - especially if I am on a trip and need to go to a different dealer.

Jay, I know of no other way to reset the codes or warning lights other than the dealerships and a devise such as the Scangauge. I had a check engine light on my explorer and took it to a dealership. They charged $80 to put it on the machine and called me for an additional $250 to replace a sensor. The sensor cost me $48 from another dealership and I picked up the explorer with the light out. The real problem was a disconnended vacuum hose. Took the sensor back for a refund two years ago and no engine light has returned yet.
The dealerships can cheat Ford Motor Co. all they want while my vehicle is under warranty. Get my point.

Just got my ScanGauge as I walked out the door from the USPS man. Ordered it Sat. (holiday), was mailed Tues. and got it on Fri., not bad service to me. The wife and I were headed on a 30 mile round trip so I open the box, pluged it in, wrapped the cord two times around the streering column and set it on the dash with provided velcro. This all took around 3 min..
Now I'm back home reporting to you and I will say I'll never be without a Scangauge in the future. Just the faction of the info I got will no doubt be helpful in getting the best FE I've ever gotten. For those that did not get the nav computer, you may want to consider the Scangauge. For those who already have the Nav computer like me, there are better readouts on everything including MPG your going to love. For instance, you get a digital readout from 0 to 9,999 MPG. At a stop, your at 0 mpg, in EV, your at 9,999mpg. You can hold the gas pedal at 45mph just right to get a reading of 70-85mpg. At this point, I don't have to report 60+mpg anymore, I can give you exactly what I'm reading whether its 71mpg or 150mpg. Coasting with the ICE on and the battery full, I was reading 350mpg at times.
The RPM readout will help me a numer of ways. The digital readouts give you exact numbers like 1025RPM's and so forth. This will be helpful with knowing when you can go EV when the tach reaches the right numbers, no more guessing where the needle is. In addition, you will know the right gas pedal angle to hold a steady speed to maintain just the right RPM's to save gas. Example, with the needle, you may vary 200 RPM's up and down wasting FE, the exact digital reading will help you see your increasing or decreasing to correct sooner for a steady speed.
The digital speedometer first of all told me the needle was 2mph higher at 35mph. Now I know at 37mph in EV, I'm really going 35mph. Now I can set the cruise in EV by the digital speedometer at the safest speed to avoid a unplained restart of the ICE.
Coolant temp. will also add those in both high and low heat for FE. It also will let you know of a problem sooner. When to expect to get into EV.
These four displays are on the screen at the same time for a quick glance. I need more time to check out many other readings but I did do a scan and the scangauge reported no trouble codes for my FEH.
The scangauge has a red backlight so you can see it at night great. I will most likely place it dirrectly in front of me on the dash closes to touching the windshield so I can watch the road at the same time with little eye movement.

Gary,
Sounds great. They seem to have solved all of the problems mentioned on earlier units.

Jay, there may still be problems but I have enough to be happy with at this point.

Six months ago, I started this thread because I thought you all may want to impove your mileage. Since then, I have used the scangauge to boost my mileage by reading all the data that a scangauge provides and testing my techniques for the best FE. My best 20 mile round trip before getting the gauge was 58mpg. The FEH is pulling over 70mpg now on the same round trip. One feature I truly love is the trip and tank MPG averages. It has proven itself to be accurate, even when I'm in EV mode.
It is not my goal to sell the gauge, it is my goal to help others improve their mileage. This past month, the SG has been improved with a new look that can be upgraded in Aug. free of charge, with a UBS port to be connected to your computer. I'm putting my old gauge in my 02 Explorer, and buying the new improve style in my FEH. Folks, you may want to check this thing out at http://scangauge.com/ if you don't own one yet. It plugs into a connecting under your dash on most models sold in the US after 1996, and can be setup in minutes. The new price is $169 which includes shipping.

Does the Scan Guage remove the air bag warning light? I had to remove a seat from my 06 civic hybrid and the air bag light stayed on.
I don't see why not Ed, it has the reset button for all codes that can be reset if the trouble code is no longer present. The dealer should also clear the code free if you don't say you caused the light by removing the seat.
When you reset the codes using scanGauge. Does it actually reset the codes IN the FEH computer or does it just resetting the code values within the scanGuage device so that it can scan again?
I very excited about this product and when the usb capability comes out this august, we can all compare detailed data.

The reset of the code is just like the dealership resetting the code. The trouble light will go off if the condition or trouble has been corrected. It is a simple clearing of a warning light.
An example would be leaving your gas cap off and a trouble light comes on the dash. If you take your vehicle to a dealership, they will charge you for a system check ($85 or more) and I had them give me BS that would cost me an additional $300. When I said no and bought the parts they said where the problem, I ended up taking them back for a refund. They had already cleared the code and everything was just fine.
A scangauge will help you determine if you need to take it in for something you maynot want to mess with and help kept the dealer honest. Good luck with that!

Is there a screen that allows you to display the charge status of the hybrid battery system?
I really like my scangauge and use it all the time to view instantaneous mileage. It is a good investment.

Not yet, but their working on it.
The new interface has been delayed to sometime in Sep.
I just posted an update at http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=10551#post10551

Hi All
Just an update on the Scangauge 11...
The smaller better looking Scangauge 11 is available at scangauge.com for $169 which includes shipping. Scangauge has been working on a data interface which can store long term records of your driving results. In addition, their trying to incorporate field upgrades to the Scangauge 11. This has delayed the units, but hopefully they will be out soon.
The Scangauge I purchased last December still works good as new, but it is not the best looking gauge and is about 4 times larger than the Scangauge 11. I just filled up today, so here is a comparison of the Nav Energy data and dash gauges:
Scangauge 1
Tank Average - 44.6mpg
Average Speed - 22mph
Hours To Empty - 4
Miles To Empty - 89.0 (based of a 15 gallon tank)
Trip or Miles - 580
Gallons To Empty - 2
Gallons Used - 13.0
Nav Sys. and Dash Gauges
OD Reading - 30,140
Trip OD - 586.1
Nav Sys Average - 47.2mpg
Miles To Empty - minus 26 miles from 0 reading
Miles To Empty After Fill - 665 miles
Gallons pumped - 13.0
Good Luck
GaryG
