Prius

How do people use the B gear? I'm at a loss. I've read up to at least the part about it in my manual(s), but it basically says it's the "breaking" gear which means what? Your opinions please, I've only had my Prius 1 week.

Jez,

It should only be used when you are going down hill. Its for engine breaking so that you don't have to use your brakes as much. I just tried it this morning while coasting down a steep hill. Works great and it kept me slower so that I didn't have to use my brake. My recommendation is that you only use it when going down a hill and you have other traffic in front of you and you don't want to use your break to slow yourself down.

Hope that helps

Interesting, I never knew that. I have been meaning to find out more about the "B" gear.

Thanks for the tip. I will try using it.

By the way, my prius only averages about 42mpg, both in city and highway. I thought that these were supposed to give atleast 50mpg.

Again, I live in missouri, a lot of the roads here are ups and downs.

Surya,

A couple of things...First, I'm getting closer to 55mpg over freeway and city. 1) I never use the AC. 2) I don't open my windows, because it causes wind resistent 3) I drive around 55 mph, going faster decreases mpg. 4) Make sure you tires are inflated 44 psi is max for tires so I opt for 40 psi. 5) Don't accerlate very fast and use coasting or gliding to help mpg. Try to avoid using the brake to slow you down.

We have discovered the "B" gear works fine on moderate downgrades, but is fairly worthless on steep grades. As for mileage, on a recent trip where we spent over 800 miles on I-80, we averaged 50.4 mpg driving at 76mph with the a/c and the cruise control on. Our overall average over the first 6,000 miles is around 46mpg. Not too bad.
