Prius Gas Engine

Is there anything unique about the gas engine used in the Prius? A local newspaper article suggested it is unique by referring to it as a new type, "(something)" -cycle type gas engine. But - as usual, the reporter didn't seem to know his elbow from his you-know-what. Anybody?
