Prius Experience
Created October 23, 2007, at 6:02 pm by geisemann
The Prius is horrible for the USA.
First of all the Batteries are not good because they are Nickel Metal and they cannot be recycled.
Second buying a foreign car puts nothing back into the USA no matter what people are saying “Built in the USA" its hogwash. Basically you are killing important jobs higher up.
Third the extra cost of this car will not even pay for the gas and future battery replacement.
Forth, if you keep your old car the old car its better. To produce a car has horrible impacts on the environment.
The Prius is basically a car for people who are really not practical people and it’s actually worse for the USA and worse for our environment.

geisemann,
The topic of whether to buy a new, higher MPG car vs keep an older car was credibly addressed in the analysis at the link below. Is there a flaw here that I don't see?
http://www.triplepundit.com/pages/askpablo-time-to-get-a-new-car-002538.php
In addition, Toyota says the following regarding the battery. I realize that there may be a credibility issue, but I think that it would be fairly risky for them to state so categorically if not some truth to it:
"Toyota has a comprehensive battery recycling program in place and has been recycling nickel-metal hydride batteries since the RAV4 Electric Vehicle was introduced in 1998. Every part of the battery, from the precious metals to the plastic, plates, steel case and the wiring, is recycled. To ensure that batteries come back to Toyota, each battery has a phone number on it to call for recycling information and dealers are paid a $200 "bounty" for each battery."
Finally, I don't disagree that there are economic factors that come into play with buying imports. However, when American car companies can match the quality, styling, and hybrid engineering of Toyota then I will seriously considering buying American. I sincerely hope that day is not far off. In the mean time, check every other purchase you make to see if it is made here at home. I doubt you will find many manufactured products that are made in the USA.

The American car companies are now making cars much better. Toyota has had a string of recalls and the new tundra has horrible problems.
JD power listed the best cars in the world are Buick and Lexus that means everything else is worse.
So if you buy a Toyota it’s worse than a Buick.
Also I believe ford scored much higher on the fusion than any other car Toyota had.
So I don’t see why this car is being purchased and the reason is to show off. I saw a Prius owner getting pulled over on the highway because of speeding. IF the owner really cared about global warming why drive 80 mph. At that speed the hybrid drive is useless.
Also the prius does not work in hybrid with the AC running.
The neg impact of buying foreign, losing jobs here in the states not just manf but engineering, design and overall profits.
The impact of material waste.
At least GM is making a large vehicle get better mileage where it counts. If you buy a civic or focus you pay the same in gas as a prius and it costs less.
Putting Americans to work, allowing them to haul things with the same gas mileage of a Camry.

Also the article you listed is way off basis becasue most of us do not purchase hummers at 10 mpg. Also it not stating the evo inpact of the materals in the new car.
JD power listed the best cars in the world are Buick and Lexus that means everthing else is worse.
So if you buy a toyota its worse than a buick.
Also I belive ford scored much higher on the fusion than any other car toyota had.

geisemann:
I'm sorry, but you spew the most blatantly inaccurate stuff I've seen in this board for a VERY long time. Even though responding to each and every of your falsehoods would be extremely easy, I suspect it is a waste of anyone's intelligence to do so. What a waste.
If anything, I can't help but to feel embarrassed for you.
Take care, learn a little more, and grow up.

Whether I agree with it or not, I respect everyone and their opinion for every forum I go to. What I don't respect is anyone who's sole purpose is to snipe a forum. People that do this only create an account to try and do as much damage as possible. Often they provide false, outdated, or misrepresented information. Usually the sniper repeats their same "chant" in a similar shape and form as to the previous ones. These people provide no replies or weak replies that lack any kind of real discussion.
Google geisemann and check other forums. There is certainly a pattern. Just like the businesses that thread a forum only to advertise a product, the best thing to do is to ignore this user.
yea I google'd the name when i saw this post. lots of hits in forums.
The Prius is a total PR event they keep it in the same showroom as the V8 gas guzzlers.
At least GM is making a 2 mode hybrid for there trucks and in that size range it makes much more logic to have a hybrid .
The lower the gas millage and weight the more logic a hybrid makes. To go from 30 to 40 is not really anything on paper.
To go from 15-20 is huge.
Toyota is researching how light they can make their cars so they can bet better millage.
This is so we can suffer and kill more people for there image.
I ran the numbers to buy a Toyota Prius you have to waste so much in producing it that you destroy the environment. There was a research project that came out stating the impacts of keeping your old car vs a new car.
Keeping your old car is MUCH better for the environment unless you drive a hummer. Most of us are not.
Also it saves you aprox 2k in gas over 10-20 years but the battery pack cost you 3k in 8 years to replace.
So basically not only is the Toyota Prius a total waste of money. Its bad for the environment, bad for the us economy and its totally unsafe in crash tests.
Trust me I rather be in a GM than a toyota anyday. I was just in a large auto accident and took the back right off a toyota.
Toyota cars are totally unsafe.
People get with it one day in the emergency room is not going to pay for the savings in gas.
When I see people buying foreign Toyotas and Prius I think how stupid they can really be?
Just to be in style?
Oh brother. I owned a Monza, Olds 98 and Camaro...junk, pure junk with constant problems. When GM gives me a 100,000 mile warranty on anything and everything besides wipers, tires and filters I may consider them again but I wouldn't buy a American made piece of junk until we corrected the problems. Oh and I get a loaner nicer than my vehicle while my car is in the shop. Speaking of the shop, GM should have 24 hour service centers and not the M-F 7-6 pm stuff because of the horrible reliability. The slight variance in one more production stage of the hybrid electric battery is nothing compared to the emissions of an insecurity vehicle like the Hummer or Suburban. Toyota just built a new plant in Texas where they make Tundras creating hundreds of jobs. I think every GM executive needs to come down here and work on the assembly line for minimum wage since they are incapable of anything else. GM volt? Maybe you could explain how many more coal plants or nuclear reactors we would have to build to supply more electricity for say the 1,000,000 people that buy the volt?
TXatheist
I have owned many cars in my time. Most of the Japanese cars fell apart had major melt downs.
Some of the cars I have owned in my life time.
I owned a ford taurus 250k miles. Orginal engine orginal transmission
Ford explorer 202k still running orginal everthing
Parents own cadillac seville over 10 years 104k old no problems at all
I owned a 1978 cadillac seville over 300 k miles orginal engine rebuld trans at 220 k.
Toyota Crpola! Engine over heated! blue one valve, at 89k Blue the trans at 100k, body rusted. ( WOW so great!!)
Toyota Supera Cam shaft failled, struts failled hoses burst at around 98k
Mercadies S500 ( You dont want to know what failed. What didnt)
Volkswagon ( Total disaster)
GO GM! with the volt. I will save the enviroment with out de-facting my country. I will wait the volt. OR I can waint in a toyota dealler to look at a tundra right next to a prius. At least at GM the trucks have 2 mode hybrid that is 40% more efficient than toyota.
I am so tired of Anti American Prius people, they make up this american junk crap and to be honest its so wrong. Buick is not making cars better than lexus. The Prius is the BIGGEST PR stunt in history. Its about as hi-tech as a 1908 detroit electric that could do 40 miles on a charge without any gas.
They make me so sick. Wasting American Money and people wonder why our country is heading towards a ressision. Maybe because the idiots in CA by all foreign products.
At least there is apple and microsoft out there holding there own. IF people in CA could buy Foreign software they would do it!
G
anti-american? ouch. Anyway, why did it take GM 10 years to make something comparable to the Prius? Please don't compare the E85 malibu to the prius. Volt is a last ditch effort because the executives realized they were wrong to not compete with the Prius/Civic hybrid.
"To go from 30 to 40 is not really anything on paper.
To go from 15-20 is huge."
Dude, this is basic high school algebra. They're both 30% increases.
Advise: Go back to school. And stay AWAKE this time.
Wow, wonder what else you could be wrong about?
geisseman,
Have you seen the movie Roger and Me? That is a reason GM is doing bad.
Have you seen the movie "Who killed the electric car?"? Actually, GM had the first electric car, but then teamed up with American oil to squash it to keep the oil profits going. Stupid American companies, always shooting themselves in the foot.
Yes, another good movie and I'm well aware of the power of big oil living here in Texas.
"heading towards a ressision"
Oh no....anything but a "ressision".
If people who seek out the most technologically advanced mass production car simply to reduce pollution and American dependence on foreign oil disgusts you then I have a simple solution....don't buy one and don't bother visiting sites dedicated to their existence. It is a radical plan, but I think it just might work.
Happy trolling Senor geisemann. Best of luck with your cultural sensitivity training.
And I still bought a Prius.
I did the research and the math. I came to one conclusion.
Detroit (et.al) are wrapping themselves in the American Flag, while outsourcing 95% of automotive production overseas, in order to fatten their wallets.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN AMERICAN CAR.
There are only cars built overseas by American owned companies.
And even at that, I was willing to buy an "American Named" car if it was just "ballpark close" to the quality and features of the Prius. Detroit has commericals on air right now bragging about building a 30mpg SUV. Sorry boys, my old Honda CR-V got 29 mpg, and I dumped it to save on gas consumption.
Detroit will continue to buy congressmen, pay under to table to stonewall meaningfull legislation, and try to tell us it's our patriotic duty to drive 8 mpg monster trucks.
The only way Detroit is EVER going to produce a quality product is when they loose enough market share to wake up and realise that we don't WANT to drive a 4 ton SUV to the store to pick up a quart of milk.
Yes I have seen the movie but it’s not totally clear who is at fault. I am blaming chevron as they made the law that cars that use that battery type NIMH have to be hybrid. They hold the patients on that battery technology.
What I fell was bad that GM crushed the EV1 however I don’t hold that against them at all and the management that was in place 10 years ago is not the same that was there 20 years ago or here currently.
Also when you are buying American it’s not where the car is made or the parts are made it’s where the profits are going back to jobs that support YOUR income.
Why is our current economy doing so poorly. Look around at Prius drivers!
American manufacturing is one component. The others are education, research and investing in your son or daughters future.
When you buy American the profits stay right here in the USA where we can keep engineering jobs, management jobs and finance jobs that are totally not related to manufacturing.
Toyota saying that 50% of the parts from the new camery are from the US is a wash of what is important.
So what you are esuriently saying is that to turn the USA into a manufacturing plant with out anyone thinking or any money being re-invested into out intellectual property, patients or future engineering knowledge base is not important?
Come on people buying a foreign car is about as anti- American as you can get and the story its built in the USA just does not cut it.
Toyota PR, Adverts and other people have done a great job covering up the fact that they are taking your money and they are getting richer off of you. This country is not. Look at our current situation and that will show if we keep buying China toys, cars made or owned from overseas and stop investing in our oun country we will be in very serious trouble.
Nobody is buying foreign cars "just because they're foreign". They buy them because they are better quality. That is why I've bought Toyota and Honda for over a decade. I gave the old flag-waving American enthusiastic go of buying American autos a couple of times, only to be burned a couple of times. Actually, it was 4 times to be exact. And I haven't went back since I switched. And won't until they can dig themselves out of the crappola hole they've built for themselves. Oh, ok, you say you've gotten a great am. vehicle. Well, fine. What about the other 99.99% that don't. Here's the deal with american cars: If you're lucky enough to get one of the 50% or so that don't have problems, they'll last a long time without problems. If you're in the other 50%, you're out of luck. It's the american auto company's way of building in profits. Toyota makes it's profits on a quality product. Ford, GM, etc. on repairs. It's a fact. It's been proven over, and over again statistically, not your overblown, overhyped, over-flag-waving rhetoric. As for the anti-american, buy american crap. Keep it up, you're what keeps companies like Ford and GM producing crap. I'll vote with my money.
I have had much better luck with American cars in respect with them lasting longer and being safer and spending a lot less for body repairs.
I recently was in an auto accident with my ford explorer and it hit a Toyota camery.
The Toyota camery crumbled and was totaled and my ford didn’t have really too much other than a scratch.
If you buy a Toyota remember one thing it’s a disposable car. If you get in any type of accident small or large the car will be totaled.
I rented a Prius recently and the metal was so cheap on it I could push the hood down with my hand.
I am sorry the Prius is very anti-American. It makes me sick to see our country by so many foreign products.
Prius people from what I have seen leave there lights on in there homes and don’t even by compact fluorescents.
You would be much better off keeping your old SAFE car. Investing in solar power, wind power and other taking public transportation and working on your leaks in your house to safe your heating bill.
A CA Exec recently was pulled over going 100MPH in his prius and this is terrible, the car does not save you a cent at this speed on top of this if you wreck you will be dead in a second.
My money will go towards American owned companies that make efficient vehicles.
My life is important and if I am dead the extra air quality won’t help me 6 feet under.
From my research Toyota customers are extremely upset with the Lexus SUV hybrid. Toyota lied about the fuel mileage.
They also lied about the Prius.
Basically I really feel the Prius is a PR stunt and people were lied too. They large trucks Toyota sells are in the same showrooms that guzzle gas and they are unsafe as well
The new Ford Trucks are all 5 stars the Toyota could not even get 4 and on top of that JD power just rated
Buick better than Lexus and Lexus is Toyotas best brand.
Ford also beat Toyota in quality
So again you are buying foreign because it’s foreign and it’s really anti-American.
Look at the JD ratings they will show you that American cars are really better!
Look at quality ratings overall for the past 5-10 years and I think you will see a pattern. Namely, Toyota, Lexus, Honda, etc on top. Yes, the landscape is evening out over time, but domestic automakers still have a ways to go to catch Japanese brands on a consistent basis.
As for Toyota and other Japanese autos being unsafe disposal cars, this is simply laughable. Go look at the safety ratings and tell me what you find. If you are going to make these ridiculous assertions then you need to back them up with real data....not your hood push-down test (for the record, if you think the material in that hood is what keeps you safe, then I understand why you have so little faith in Japanese safety....but what do you think of Saturn's plastic sidepanels?).
For the record, I want to buy an American vehicle, but there is very little available that I am interested in. I don't want a 5000lb, 15mpg gas guzzling behemoth. The Ford Edge is interesting, but I want better gas mileage. Saturn Outlook is interesting, but way too big and needs to get MUCH better gas mileage to be seriously considered. The Saturn Vue is also interesting, but you get very little interior space for that size vehicle. FEH is a little too truck like for my needs, but is definitely a realistic option.
geise, I am curious, should Japanese consumers buy American cars? If so....why? What about Europeans....should they buy American cars? Or should Japanese consumers buy only Japanese cars, American consumers buy only American cars, Europeans buy only Europeans cars, etc?
Geise,
Consumers buy things that maximize their marginal benefit, regardless of who made it.
You said that American branded vehicles are better than Japenese ones just because of ONE JDPowers survey. It takes years of consistency to build up the consumer confidence to change consumer mindset on a certain product. Most consumers look for quality with a proven track record... and historically, Toyota and Honda has been on that path for quite a while now. It's not about buying American or not, it's about buying things that do not break, do not have high cost in the long run, do bring up future problems! Currently, the Japanese branded ones are doing it right. If their American counterparts can do that consistently, consumers would definately consider them. The same goes for the European branded ones too.
Who makes it does not matter, it is what the consumer gets back for what they paid is!
No and also I have owned toyotas and they fall apart, have not done well in accidents, and tend to have catastrophic failures when things do break.
Lets see in a recient survey the new Camery got a very poor rating becaues of large transmission problems and things falling apart.
http://autos.yahoo.com/2007_toyota_camry/
The only thing Green about Toyota is US money going to Japan.
If people would buy more American maybe the cars would also start getting even better and they are quite excellent now.
This relates to CA anti-american people. They if they could buy foreign software they would. At least Apple and Microsoft have the advantage now but wait. China is moving in to even copy the I phone.
I own my own American engineering company and I cant tell you the amount of foreign companies that try to steal my designs.
People need to consider the impact of there decision to buy foreign goods. Toys, Cars, Dog food even.
Consumer reports or some call Consumer distorts have had historically large contributions from Toyota. They are no-profit but they take large contributions.
This affects in how they rate cars. How can they rate a car poorly if they get a large donation from this company.
I have owned many cars they rated excellent fail quite a lot and owned many cars they rated poorly be the best cars I have owned.
To make blanket statements is not a way to be an educated consumer.
My point is wake up look at the hard facts and dont just get a car because its in style. Run the numbers and think hard about your safety.
Really????????
So true !!!!
And since you have yet to produce any links or verifiable data backing up your blunt and subjective allegations you expect to be seen as educated?
I sincerely hope not !!!
Please read your own words carefully to see what I mean. ;)
I'll tell you what: Give us some government, or other professional or academic consumer oriented data (links and reports) that proves that Toyota and Honda consistently produce inferior and unsafe products to any US manufacturer and we promise you will not be blamed for trolling these forums.
Cheers;
MSantos
Your link is nothing more than a collection of browsee opinions. Hardly scientific.
Your accusation about Consumer Reports is both unsubstantiated and convenient. Surely you know that they will disagree with your assumptions, which means that any attempt to categorically dismiss all of their data is very convenient.
But I'll tell you what....how about you provide some sort of data to back up your claims. Anything. Or should we just take your word on it that Priuses are not safe because their hood material is thin?
Finally, I have to say that your quote below is so ironic it is simply beautiful
"To make blanket statements is not a way to be an educated consumer.
My point is wake up look at the hard facts and dont just get a car because its in style."
You have done nothing but make blanket unsubstantiated comments about Japanese cars and hybrids in particular. Also, you have yet to comment on why hybrids are to be criticized for being "in style", but gas hogging SUV's that were the life blood of Detroit for the last decade get a free pass.
Perhaps you should take your own advice.
Happy trolling.
We all know that Consumer Reports is paid by Toyota.
There was a article published how they get donations and heavy ones from Toyota.
From the poor ratings they gave American cars you would have to have a problem every week.
I had one of the cars they rated poor and never had an issue with the car. Thats when I stopped my subscription .
Recently they have been getting flack about the contributions from Toyota and other jap car companies so they have had to rate a few American cars well but it will go back to who gives them more money how well they rate a companies cars.
I have looked up better sources on the internet including
Yahoo autos.
G
Yo, G.
I would love to see what proof you can conjure up regarding this "flack about the contributions from Toyota..." that Consumer Reports has been receiving. I'm sure that your proof will be from a totally unbiased and reliable source.
As for myself, I have found Consumer Reports to be extremely unbiased and accurate in their ratings and product evaluations. I have owned both American and Japanese vehicles. The American cars have been plagued by problems from the getgo, whereas each of my Japanese vehicles have been barely broken in at 100,000 miles.
My current vehicle, a Honda Passport (rebadged Isuzu Rodeo) has over 185,000 miles on it. I will gladly provide you with a photo of the odometer if you wish. Although I'm sure that I can get at least another 100,000 miles out of it, I'm researching replacing it with a hybrid....a Honda or Toyota hybrid. I absolutely will not waste my hard-earned money on an American vehicle.
G,
"We all know that Consumer Reports is paid by Toyota"
We do? We all know that Consumer Reports is biased in favor of Toyota products as you imply? Sorry, you are going to have to show some proof. And telling us to use the google to search the innerwebs is not sufficient. You made the accusation, it is your job to back it up.
"I had one of the cars they rated poor and never had an issue with the car."
I am sure that is very common. These are simply averages. Just as smoking will increase your risk of lung cancer, it is still possibly for a heavy smoked to live to 100+ while a non-smoker health nut dies at age 50. However, your singular experience is hardly evidence of their bias.
"Recently they have been getting flack about the contributions from Toyota and other jap car companies so they have had to rate a few American cars well but it will go back to who gives them more money how well they rate a companies cars"
So, how is that cultural sensitivity training going? "Jap" cars? Seriously? That is how you refer to vehicles made in Japan? Nice.
"I have looked up better sources on the internet including
Yahoo autos"
Oh....you have? Do you care to share them with us?
I did a google search its all over the web.
I too do not like consumer reports for the same reason they are paid by donations.
Do a goole search G is right.
http://www.consumerreports.org/health/about/privacy.htm
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/money/news/2006/12/charity-watchdogs-...
OR now that toyota is not paying them
http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/16/toyota-hit-hard-by-new-consumer-repor...
So I totaly agree with G
I was on yahoo and they rated the Camery so much lower than most other cars
http://autos.yahoo.com/2007_toyota_camry/
Looks like G was right again.
Looks like G figured out how to post with multiple screen names.
I am surprised by all the anti toyota pro american rhetoric on your by the G fellow, Toyotas are being made in North America by Canadians and Americans. the cars are being bought by Canadians and Americans. we recently rented a prius in Florida and we pleasantly surprised by the mileage. we drove from St Petes to the Keys on $28 dollars worth of fuel. at $3 per gallon. amazing.
one thing that we are wondering about, though..... what does the letter B to the right of the Drive symbol represent? we wondered if it meants battery? there wasnt any manual in the rental unit, so we never quite figured that out.
we own a 2000 avalon and love the quality of our car. I am truthfuly disappointed in the latest models of the Avalon, they are more like american cars and I am keeping my beautiful car until it bites the dust. we were amazed at all the Toyota cars and trucks down in Florida. so Americans are choosing with their wallets and I will seriously consider buying a prius in the future. I will be investing in a North American company that hires workers right here in North America. now that sounds alright to me. how bout you?
Well I just looked it up a lot of Toyota cars are made in the USA, Lexus is not, but 10% of the parts are US. Compared to an American F-150 truck which is over 90%
So yes buying a Toyota is anti-American in the since that you are supporting less US jobs.
Also profits do go overseas and you are supporting lower end jobs in the US.
More and More research and development engineering and high end jobs are leaving the US.
So if you support your son or daughter being an assembly line worker then buy a Toyota.
Change needs to happen!
Gary
The "B" position on the gearshift stands for engine Braking.
The engine's valve timing is changed so that the engine acts as an air compressor, and absorbs energy from the wheels, and disipates it thru the exhaust system as compressed air.
Similar to a truck's "Jake" brakes, but without all the noise.
Brake mode DOES NOT store energy in the battery by regenetive braking, as normally happens.
the B mode allows you to descend a long hill without overheating the brakes. The battery's regenitive braking has a limited abliity to absorb energy. After the battery is fully recharged, the car can only be slowed on long hills by the mechanical brakes, or by engine compression braking.
geisemann - is that German descent? How long ago diod your parents, grandparents, great or great great grandparents emmigrate from Germany? - Just curious.
Sorry, but the Prius is an excellent vehicle. It is well designed, well engineered and well built. It gets great mileage, the owners love ther Priuses - in fact it has the highest owner satisfaction of any vehicle. Any - better than even Chevy or Ford pickups. It is true is is a PR event because it is a great car it deserves great PR.
The Prius can be bought for $24,000 the new hybrid trucks GM makes cost $50,000. The GM trucks are a fine technology. So who made the better marketing decision? Toyota making a $14,000 midsize car a hybrid for 24,000 that gets 45 MPG or GM making a $35,000 truck a hybrid for 50,000 that gets 22MPG? I see a lot of Priuses all over the place.
But Geisemann I digress - you are upset because Americans are realizing that the Japanese car companies design and make vastly superior and more reliable vehicles than American car companies. Americans are buying these better vehicles in this world economy. You want us to believe that because you say you've experienced poor quality in foreign cars that we'll believe you.
I just bought a used Toyota Camry with 90000 miles on it. I've driven it 10000 miles so far. It is the best car I've ever owned. I have bought brand new and used American cars before. Sorry but the Camry's a better car.
Ford makes some good cars, Chevy makes some good cars, but once people own and compare cars they are capable of deciding for themselves. You can rant all you want on this forum, but people have enough of their own experiences and can decide for themselves - get over it.
i don't have any first hand experience with a Prius in the USA but my nephew drives one in NY, and hasn't complained about it yet.
and yes i have heard stories about the higher end jobs migrating beyond the US, making it harder for Americans to move up from assembly work.
one thing i do support Toyota for is their new 'green campaign'... its good they're creatively embracing promotion for helping the environment in ways other than breaking the bank for a Prius.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bknyIKeGpHA
Oh here we go again. Toyota pumping money into this site and having its internet division putting in adverts in where it can.
Of course when the American Car companies come out with something new they don't list it here because toyota has its goons running this site.
The only thing green about Toyota is American money to go to japan.
Toyota is anti American and anti greeen. The prius plant is a mega environmental disaster and driving an old hummer is better than driving a new prius.
Join in to save the planet and dont drive a toyota keep your old car.
Stop buying toyota cars period they are cheap and if you get into an accident you wont make it. Saftey of these cars is horrable very thin metal.
Do this go to a Toyota dealer flex the hood of a prius then do it at a ford dealer with any car they make. You will see how cheap the Toyota is.
Toyota has people brain washed that buying a prius is good for the air. When keeping your old car is much better . Prevents land fills .
I do recommend keeping your old car tuned up and making sure it passes emissions.
Bill
"Do this go to a Toyota dealer flex the hood of a prius then do it at a ford dealer with any car they make. You will see how cheap the Toyota is."
We all know the key to quality and safety is the thickness of the hood.
Didn't there used to be a button for this forum you could press to mark a comment as spam?
To make this short and sweet, I just want to reiterate what someone else said - "There is no such thing as an American car." All these companies have huge chunks of their operations outsourced all over the world. In addition, using Toyota as an example, many of these companies are in America and are creating jobs for Americans. There are Toyota branch plants all over Canada and the US - these branch plants create tons of jobs. In addition, Toyota is repeatedly praised for their unique operations. They are the textbook example of a company with excellent TQM strategies. Toyota is well known for quality. Yes, American cars are getting better, but are still unmatched to the operational effectiveness and sustainable competitive advantage yielded by Toyota. I find it entertaining Geise, that you have so much time on your hands to repeatedly post negative comments on this forum. Maybe you should spend more time working or doing oil changes on your American car? Have a great day!
I'd rather crash a Prius than a Neon, Cavalier, or Escort, which I believe all weigh more than the Prius, and I KNOW have far lower safety ratings.
Please, don't feed the trolls.
No point in feeding the troll's sock-puppets either.
Sarah,
You are totally wrong you are when you buy a foreign car you are you are giving jobs, profits and overall research to a foreign company.
I suspect you work for Toyota PR.
It’s not where the parts are made or where the car is made it’s where the profits go. Not into this country. The dollar is getting weaker and weaker and soon we will have no industry.
Buying foreign has nothing to do with the parts its high tech jobs.
Do you want your son or daughter to be an assembly line worker for Toyota? No.
You want your son or daughter to be an engineer or a scientist.
If you buy a Toyota you will make sure that work is done in Japan.
All Toyota models give much less back to the USA than American cars and in fact the new Camry uses 20% American Parts and the profits go back into Japan.
The only thing green about Toyota is our money going over there.
I looked at JD power and most American cars now are better than Acura and other Foreign cars.
So I am not sure where people get the idea Foreign is better and the fact they are making our way of life poor because of some rumor is kind of sick to be honest.
I guess to buy Foreign is to be "the in crowd" at the expence of our way of life.
There are NO American cars.
GM cars are made overseas
Ford cars are made overseas
Chrysler cars are made overseas
Many Honda are made in the USA
as well as many Toyota, Volkswagon, ect.
ALL, repeat ALL automotive companies are MULTI-NATIONAL.
Why is it that the cast of "Deliverance" always wave the flag when they don't know what they are talking about?
I agree with people here that we need to buy American Cars.
We need to support our own companies or our country will get weaker and the dollar will fall more.
People dont even try to buy our own products and have negative attitudes towards American products.
GM, ford, Chrysler produces cars overseas but profits go into the US economy to support future education and future US growth as a leader in GNP.
I really think a lot of people here are brainwashed by foreign marketing stating that 20% of the car has USA parts but the equation is more complex and consumers need to really look at what there future life will be like for them in this country our way of life can be at stake when you purchase everything foreign.
Many home grown products are much better!
The government should be supporting our industries. I love the fact that the government is helping us.
People are so anti American when there American car had a burnt out light bulb they think its [@%!]. But when a Foreign car owner replaces there entire transmission they still think there car is total quality. It’s all fad and consumer stupidity.
It’s about time
I am the only person on my street with a Ford and everyone else has Honda comes over and says when are you getting a Honda.
I am like OH hell no. My ford explorer has 220k on it and runs perfectly where the neighbors Honda had two transmissions in 150k.
OR tired of Consumer Distorts getting donations from Toyota
I told the neighbor so your buying Japanese and making there country richer for what reason? And he works for congress.
I hate Toyota lobbyists to in DC they are totally corrupt. Toyota spends 10 times what GM does in Washington to keep the laws on there side. IF it was a fair world we could sell cars in Japan.
I agree these toyota drivers are all just buying a Toyota because the Jones are.
Its so last year.
I am still not convinced hybrid cars are worth it.
From what I see on the price tag, it seems to me that you pay a whole lot more, and so the savings you get on lesser gas is not really justified, because the purchase price is much higher than the non-hybrid version of the car.
Yes considering you are buying Tin foil on a cheap toyota.
the Prius cost 9k to repair in a small accident and the ford focus cost like $900.00
HA so if a prius driver is in a small accident it will cost them 9k more because the metal is so cheap on toyota.
People who by toyota cars are so dumb.

This shows the difference.
