Prius and Kayak?

I'm thinking about buying a Prius - anyone have experience loading multiple kayaks on Prius using a roof rack? Any thoughts on taking the Prius off-pavement?

See my blog for August 28 athttp://www.hybridcars.com/blogs/bloglist.php?thread_id=7&month=8&year=2005. I can't speak for the Prius but I can assure you that Yakima racks fit my 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid and work well. (Of course I tie the kayak nose and tail to the under-bumper tie points as well as adding a diagonal anti-diving spring line to the roof rack straps.)
Come to think it, I vaguely recall there might not a Yakima rack clamp to fit a Prius. Check Thule.

Thule does make roof rack parts for the prius. it's suprisingly similar to the set up i had on my geo prizm (only the feet needed to be replaced).
I was one of those people who left the roof rack on all the time, it was sorta necessary (skiing and biking). More likely it was lazyness.
Has anyone outfitted their prius (or other hybrid) with a long-term roof rack and if so how's it working out? I haven't gotten it set up yet.
I'm not sure if i'm willing to sacrifice the gas mileage for easier hauling yet....

I've probably put my roof rack on and off close to a hundred times, to get the kayak to wherever we're taking it. It really doesn't take more than a few minutes...it's no trouble at all. Sometimes I just throw it in the trunk, sometimes I store it. But there's no excuse or reason to leave it on the car, unoccupied - I think I've only done that once, when I got home really really late.
