PRIUS 2006 NAVIGATION SYSTEM

Created July 28, 2006, at 4:56 pm by Anonymous

Is Prius NAV system good, compared to systems in other cars, and worth getting for $2000? It would be my first-ever ... I've done w/o one for 30 years, and am pretty good at navigating on my own (& asking directions:) Could be nice feature, also when teenagers drive the car.

I can't compare it to others vehicles because I'm only familiar with the Prius.

I would agree that it is not necessary, however, just like power windows and door locks, it is easy to get used to and comes in very handy at times. The system calculates a new route if you happen to miss a turn, run into construction, etc. It remembers your last 100 destinations so it is easy to go back to one of them without re-entering the data.

There are a few things I don't like about it. One is that you cannot access it while the car is moving. That's not good in my book. Another problem, which may be with all nav systems, is that "main street" is different than "main st." So, you may have to try both spellings to find what you want.

I got all the bells and whistles on my '05 Prius and I have not been disappointed.

I've had my 2006 Prius for about 2 1/2 weeks and have yet to master the NAV system. The map is handy, but when I tried to put in an address, the system directed me to a route that was longer. When I drove my prefered route, the system went mute. It still showed me the map and approximate miles/time, but refused to talk to me. How rude!!

BTW, there are aftermarket add-ons to over-ride the non-access while driving, although I wouldn't recommend it. Sure, if you have a passanger that is familiar with the system, it would be handy, but the thought of the driver punching in an address really scares me......

Oh, those fingerprints on the LCD screen!!!

the good thing about the nav sys coming with the car, as compared to 3rd-party add-ons, is that it connects to the odometer and knows the traveled distance without getting the gps signal, which is hard to get in big cities. it will still give you usable directions, while the 3rd-party add-ons will be totally useless.

of course, the bad thing is that it's more expensive to get and more expensive to update the map.
