I've had a 2005 Prius since August 2005 and have averaged 46 mpg. I have gotten as high as 51.3 (summer) and as low as 43.8 (winter).

Love this car, it's comfort, great gas mileage, and power in mountain driving.

Got my new 2007 Touring Edition on Dec 16th, and refilled the tank for the first time yesterday. 8.9 gallons put it full again, but 302 miles were on the odometer. So not quite 35 mpg on the only measure that really counts. :(

I guess it will take a while to get the mileage into the 40s or beyond.

Sprague, it must be the new touring edition that's so horrible on mileage. My first tank was actually my best, way back in 2004, 51 mpg. Here are some things I've noticed that might help:

Short trips hurt mpg. Don't know why, but if I have a week when I don't do any long (over 10 mile) trips, my mpg can easily drop by 3 to 5.

Mild weather is good. Really cold and really hot weather sap the mileage.

Hills make a difference--don't try to speed up when you're going uphiil, and if it's safe try to let the downhill go without braking. Depends on your drive, though, and of course don't do that if there's lots of traffic.

Um, what else? My best tanks have been those on long highway trips with gentle hills. And don't drive like a teenager.:D

850 miles on the odometer. So far averaging 47 mpg. Mostly freeway driving.

Hoping it goes up when it is broken it.

I have been driving our 07 prius for a week now and am only getting 35mpg on average. I have been driving about 20mi roundtrip to town each day and the rest of the miles are just short trips around town. I have been trying to be as gentle as possible with starts and stops and watch the screen so as to keep the gas engine off as much as I can. Why am I getting such poor gas mileage? The service dept at the dealership has told me that the cold weather is to blame and that perhaps I should try a different kind of gas.
I have been trying to get it to glide but seem only to be able for brief periods, and I don't know what pulse is. Can you offer some advice?

I'm currently at just under 700 on a 2007 base Prius. I was getting an average of 48-50mpg overall during our unnaturally warm winter weather (temps in the 40-60 range). Now that a bit of real winter has arrived (highs in the upper 20's to 30, lows in the upper teens to 20's) it has gone down considerably - 38-40mpg average. Can definately see how extra use of power options - defroster, rear window defogger, etc and increased warm-up time has affected mileage. Not that I'm complaining, my last car averaged only 19-21, at best, in the same weather. Can't wait for the spring warm up to see what I can get when temps are in the 60's to 70's!

Sorry to double post, just saw the question about poor mileage. Even a hybrid system uses an ICE, and all gasoline engines get far lower mpg in cold weather, especially when temps get down to the 20's or lower. I could coax 26-30 overall mpg out of my Chevy Impala during the spring and fall months. On a cold winter day I was lucky to get 19-22mpg over the same routes.

Summer driving stayed pretty high on the highway, but when the air conditioner came on, I lost 3-5 mpg average. Hybrids always do better than pure ICE's but they are prone to the same factors. The winter blends aren't very helpful either.

Netshooper, Pulse and glide is a gentle way of driving that gets you better mileage. I use it when I can but I'm obviously not the best at it.

This page has a better description.

2004 Prius, 35k mi, 43-45 mpg

On the home page of this site there is a menu in the upper left quadrant.
Click on gas mileage then on gas saving tips and finally on tips for the toyota prius. There is a very good explanation of pulse and glide as well as other useful tips.

I agree with [post=11119]wholigan[/post] this is a good explanation of how to better your MPG. My personal experience is to do the following:

1) choose a route where people easily pass you. Hard to drive will when people tailgate

2) Pump up your tires.

3) The Prius spends the first 10-20 minutes burning gas to heat the catalytic converter. During that time I shift into Neutral when I'm not accelerating.

4) Learning the best way to accelerate can save a ton of gas... I'm still learning.

5) When on the Highway go as slow as you possibly can and switch to the consumption screen. Try to keep the MPG bar between 50-80mpg (keep it at 50 going up a hill and below 80 on your way down). That's called driving with load and can save a good deal of gas on the highway.

6) Try to avoid driving if your not going to have the car on for at least 30 minutes.

7) On road trips follow 18 wheelers (at safe distance :o ) and you'll pick up about 10mpg. You should feel a shudder when you get into their wake. Then the mpg should jump.

8) I suspect (although can't prove) that the control computer (ECU) will learn during the breakin so beyond a mechanical breakin, there is also a computer breakin (perhaps?). I've heard of people taking a huge hit in mileage if they replace their ECU.

9) Set your spedo to km/h instead of mph, you'll improve your mpg by 1 or 2 mpg.

Hello everyone, I'm new to hybridcars.com and hope to be able to share my experience with many, many miles on my 2005 Prius. In the 2 years 2 months since I bought my car, I've put just over 86,000 miles on it. I'm a sales rep and on the road every day. I LOVE my Prius and can't imagine driving any other car. During the cooler Northern California winter months I get about 46/47 MPG and now that it's warming up I'll get closer to 50MPG. I haven't even pumped up the tires, but plan to do that with my next set (which will be in the next month or so). I do drive mostly on the freeway and am pretty good at coasting. And no, I don't drive like a snail, I usually do 70/75 mph.

Okay, I just got my Prius. What type of gas do you recommend for best mileage - regular, plus or premium?

Does it really make a difference?

Regular is better than Premium. I'd been pretty lucky with some of the cheap brands (Walmart sells gas in Texas), but I know a few people recommend shell.

Might want to check out:

I'm new to this forum but not new to Prius'. Bought a 2001 in Sept.2000. Had to get in line on the net. Still have the car and it has 91000 miles. I live in San Diego East County up in the mountains. It's actually my wifes car and she is a pretty good driver for a old gal. lol
We drive mostly freeway 65/70 mph. We love Cruise Control and have averaged 43/45 mpg. Just put the car in Auto Trader today.
Only have 100 miles on the 2007 we bought yesterday. Looks like it may take a while to break in, but the overall ride and comfort is much better than the smaller 2001.
I will try and keep you posted on the 2007 results.

Total: 6037 Miles; 146 Gallons; 41.34 Miles/Gall; 5.7 L/100km

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Compared to my other car Nissan Sentra, assuming 32miles/gallon (7.34 L/100km). I assume 32 MPG for the Sentra because I get practically 28 MPG in the city and 38 MPG on interstate with it.

For the same 6037Miles the Sentra would burn 188.7 Gallons.

Saving: Difference 42.61 gallons or 29% more compared to the Prius.
42.61 times 2.5$/G = 106.53 $
Approximately 100$/6000mi.

Given the above data and assumptions I will save 1 000$ after 60 000 miles
and 3 000$ after 180 000 miles.

If we do mot count the pleasure to drive Prius we need more expensive gasoline to get economical
efficiency or some $ incentive for the cleaner air.

Our president George W. Bush wants to lower the nation's average MPG by 20% in the next 10 years. I already got 30% in one day by buying Prius; and this 30% is compared to 32 MPG, not to 22 MPG.

13K miles total, 49.4MPG average current.

Oddly I used to have much better mileage before. Took it on a 2000 mile trip in Jan 07. Was averaging 51.5MPG before the trip. 43MPG during the trip (of course, highway, 75-80 MPH all the way through) and could not get it up in 45+MPG range after the trip up until maybe two weeks ago. Has been through two services since then, no abnormalities have been found.

I don't get the whole point of this pulse and glide technique. I read it back and forth - what they suggest is just to get the vehicle up to a certain speed and then let it coast. They even say "to make it not use the battery".

Well, first of all, you don't need a hybrid vehicle for that, you can do just fine with a stick shift one. Well, Prius' 0.26 aerodynamic drag coefficient helps to coast longer, but if the road conditions would allow, you could do it with any (stick shift) vehicle - get up to speed - disengage the clutch - slow down - engage, get up to speed - and so forth.

Wouldn't that be great if they did it using the battery so they can maintain normal speeds throughout the trip? Well, of course Prius would not let you drain the battery below maybe 60% of the full charge (I have a mini-rant about the battery indicator on my blog). But even those 40% the computer tries to replenish all the time, very often in less-than-perfect conditions energy-wise. Like, you are going up a small hill (that does not require the electrical motor to kick in) and it would start charging the battery although you still need the ICE torque to get to the top. It feels like you can get some extra mileage out of a Prius by just tweaking the on board computer to not charge at wrong times (or manually override it)

Cheers,
D~

Today's Hybrids can't allow the computer to enable pulse-and-glide performance because they don't have enough batteries in them and their electric drivetrain can't handle the whole driving load above about 35 MPH.
Hopefully, serial hybrids such as the Chevrolet Volt, if it ever comes out, will be able to do exactly what you describe.

2008 Prius 2,800 miles on it so far. It's winter here in upstate NY, so the mileage is not so good. Averaging about 46 mpg in local driving. But the other week, the local temp climbed up to 54 degrees, and I got 63 mpg driving home from work.
