Please Pull Over Safely!

Hi,
My '08 Escape Hybrid has been in the shop since the night of August the 6th after it completely died and would not restart, with barely 5000 miles on it. Besides the nice "Please Pull Over Safely" message, I got the "Regenative Braking Disengaged", and that was it. 24 days and two Flown in Ford Engineers later, and they still can not get my vehicle to start. I can not even begin to tell you how many parts have been thrown at it. I was called today by a Ford Customer Resolution Specialist who has started the process for Ford to buy back my Hybrid. I want another one! I was very pleased with my vehicle during the past 4 months. I totally believe this is an isolated incident and have faith lightning will not strike me again with a lemon! :D

Wow, I can't believe you would want another one after that! I would be interested to know what they have tried so far. Hard to believe they can't get it to even start...

I just got a letter from Ford regarding the problem with the "stop safely now" message. they are calling it a fals DTC (diagnostic trouble code) that is triggered by corrosion of a resister in the power unit located in the battery module.
They will install a service harness in the High Voltage Traction battery and reprogram the module to prevent the potential for a false code.
THis may help!

I actually got the same message of "lost regenerative braking" and the "same stop message you received" the day after I was using my scangauge incorrectly in an attempt to find out the hybrid battery state of charge. I stopped the engine. Waited 15 seconds, started it up and have not had a problem since.
You can read about the experiement I did over at greenhybrid.com under the thread "engine block heater=poor mans PHEV".

Well it has been over 30 days and Ford is buying back my Hybrid. I was told the service department got it to start after replacing the PCM and various other parts, (at day 29), and would need several days of driving to confirm the fix. I am going to buy another Hybrid as I like the vehicle, I will not take mine back as I could never trust it again, (Must have been built on hangover Friday...). If I can get a list of everything the Hybrid techs and Ford engineers did and replaced during troubleshooting, I will post it, if anyone is interested.

I am interested in learning more about what the service department did. Other posters have commented on the need to "reprogram" the PCM device during service work.

Well I picked up my Hybrid today and turned in my rental car until my Ford buy back paperwork is received. The vague description of service and parts reads like this: "LOAD TESTED ALL POWERS AND GROUNDS TO THE PCM AND TCM AND BCM GOOD. TESTED THE FOLLOWING CIRCUITS VDB04, VDB05, G-106, PUSHED OUT PINS INCONNECTORS C1 462, C1458A, C4227A, C2041B, C3285, C251, C220, C1463A. TWO FIELD ENGINEERS CAME OUT AND WE PREFORMED THE SAME TEST AND DOWNLOAD HEV DATA AND SENT TO FORD WITH ALL FOUR ENGINEERS CAME UP WITH THE PCM MODULE BAD REPLACED THE MODULE AND BATTERY REPROGRAMED AND LOAD VID BLOCK AND PREGRAMED OKAY ROADTEST 62 OK" "PERFORMED SYSTEM TEST KOEO, CMDTC'S CODES PRESENT P1AOC-P1AOD-P1AOE-P1A14, P2105-U0294-AND U2023. PERFORMED PIN POINT TEST QE, AA1-AA6, ALL OF TEST AND GOT SEVERAL DIFFERENT ANSWERS. CALLED HOTLINE SPOKE TO A TOM AND MIKE THEY HAD ME COMPLETE SAME TEST AGAIN AND OHM OUT THE HIGH SPEED NETWORK AND OHM EACH MODULE IN SERIES AND DISCONNECTED LOS" "INSTALLED BXT 96 R :BATTERY" "INSTALLED 7M6Z14A303B :HARNESS" "INSTALLED 8M6Z 12A650 BE (FP) :MODULE - ENGINE CONT"
This is all that was provided after 33 days in the shop....
I checked under the hood after I got home and found the negative battery cable so loose I could move it side to side and up and down with my pinkey finger! I found the fuse cover just laying on top, lucky I did not lose it while driving! The antifreeze overflow tank was not secured at all, missing two fasteners completely! I video recorded my findings and emailed them to the service manager as they were already closed by the time I got home. I will be visiting them tomorrow...

I have had similar troubles with Ford dealerships doing shoddy repairs. Never had any problems with our Toyota or Hondas. But our Fords, Chevys and Dodge truck, every trip to the dealership has been an adventure...
That also is why I am a little apprehensive about buying the '08 MMH.

Well I picked up my replacement '08 Hybrid on 26OCT07, and have put about 800 miles on it so far with zero problems or issues! It feels and drives like a completely different vehicle as compared to my previous '08 Hybrid. They put my February '08 Hybrid on a flatbed headed back to Detroit for disassemble, an autombile autopsy you could say, to try and figure out what caused the failure. My October '08 Hybrid will hopefully be trouble-free for me! :D

My "05 FWD FEH did the same thing after warranty and it cost me over $1200 to find the problem. The labor cost and towing was much of the cost, but the cause was a $12 relay in that fuse box they left the lid off on your FEH. Those relays are not known to go bad, so they never expected it to be the problem.
Enjoy your new vehicle!

I HAVE A 2008 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID PURCHASED IN NOVEMBER
2007. SINCE THEN THE CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP 5 TIMES FOR WHAT I AM TOLD IS AN ENGINE TROUBLE CODE P1A0.
THE STOP SAFELY NOW LIGHT APPEARS, THE ENGINE DIES, AND DROPS DOWN TO LIMITED ELECTRIC POWER ( APROX 5 MPH) ALL OF THE GROUNDS HAVE BEEN REPLACED, AND NOW THEY TELL ME ITS THE FUEL PUMP. FORD REFUSES TO BUY BACK THE VEHICLE, I HAVE ASKED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, WHO BY THE WAY ARE OUTSTANDING PEOPLE, TO HAVE THE AREA MANAGER CALL ME. (HE REFUSED THRU THE DEALERSHIP) I CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER RELATIONS, SPOKE TO SHEREE. AFTER THE THIRD SERVICE VISIT WITH NO SUCCESS. SHE CLOSED THE FILE AFTER THE THIRD VISIT. I HAD TO APPLY FOR LEMON LAW ARBITRATION THRU NEW YORK STATE, AND I AM WAITING FOR A COURT DATE. I WAS WILLING TO HAVE FORD REPLACE THE VEHICLE, BUT BECAUSE OF THE TREATMENT I RECEIVED FROM FORD, I NOW WANT A FULL REFUND. I GUESS FORD REALLY DOES STAND FOR FOUND ON ROAD DEAD AND FIX OR REPAIR DAILY. INCIDENTALLY, I WAS ALMOST HIT BY OTHER VEHICLES WHEN THE CAR DIED.

JD, can you "name" the dealership you bought the vehicle from and is this the same dealership you brought the vehicle in for workup?
You state the service department has outstanding people, yet the vehicle has a problem. Was the fuel pump replaced?
I'm interested in learning more on this.

My '08 Hybrid just gave me this message "Stop Safely Now". I called the Ford Service Center and they told me to have the car towed since this was the second time that the light came on. They have found the problem the same day. The cooling fan to cool the hybrid battery was not functioning properly. So it will be ready the same day as they happened to have had the parts for it. My only concern is this is the second time that something has happened with the cooling system of the hybrid battery and my warranty will run out in 2000 miles!

Your battery and the internal fans are covered under the 8 year/100,000 mile hybrid warranty and longer if you bought and live in a green state (10yrs/150,000 miles).

The "Please Pull Over Safely" message from the hybrid cars is like the Blue screen from Windows or RROD from Xbox. I have a friend that works at Fox Rent A Car and he said that they did not have any problems with hybrid cars, everything going well and no complaining from the customers. Of course it depends on the manufacturer, year and exploitation, but in general hybrid cars are reliable and can serve you for a lot of years.

I took my car 2007 Mercury Mariner Hybrid to the dealer the first time the exclamation warning light came on and the stop safely now notice came on. I was told just to pull over and turn off the engine. Turn it back on after a wait and continue on the way. It has happened several times since, however, yesterday really pushed me over the edge.
Yesterday my 2007 Mercury Mariner Hybrid (118,000 miles/approx) stopped 12 times driving 8 miles from my home where I did a u-turn to return home. It stopped 10 times on the return trip. I am fuming about this and will no longer accept this as a "quirk".

I had the same issue as 'Brenda'. My '08 Escape Hybrid had the pull over safely now message 4 times over the course of 7 months getting more and more frequent. I would be able to turn it off for a few minutes and then start it up with no further defect until serveral months weeks then days later. After the last time I got a check engine light too so I took it in. They deemed that there was a fuel pump leak causing the light, but the cooling fan to cool the hybrid battery was not functioning correctly and needed to be replaced. I am waiting now to get the part replaced...more to come.

Making some phone calls about this problem that has been happening for over 6 months.

I used to get the green wrench light occasionally and recently the "pull over and stop" light came on in my 2008 Escape Hybrid a minute after starting it. The engine would not stay on for more than a few seconds. I thought it might have something to do with the 4 kWh Enginer PHEV system I had installed. But it turned out it was just corrosion on the 12 volt battery connectors. I disconnected the 12 V battery, scraped and cleaned the contacts and sprayed them with DeOx. Problem solved. Neither the green wrench light or the "pull over and stop" warning come on anymore. I think a lot of these issues may just be due to bad contacts.

I used to get the green wrench light in my 2007 escape hybrid which the dealership could find no reason for so it was reprogrammed. It however came back but has now not come on in a few months . I now over the last month had the "pull over safely" sign twice and I am beginning to suspect the hybrid cooling system

This is most likely the motor electronics pump. Either bad connections or the pump itself is bad. There is a new design that is supposedly more robust than the old one. List on the pump is about $280 and installation shouldn't take more than half an hour.
