Oil Changes

Created March 28, 2007, at 6:27 pm by artiegardner

Is there an alternative to 0-w oil for 2003 model? Honda dealership charges so
much for an oil change.

You can use the 5w20. It`s just not as effective at reducing drag when cold.

I ordered my 0w-20 off the internet because I couldnt find it here locally.

online you can find places where 6 quarts is about 40$ so if you search around you can find the oil cheaper and you can order Honda filters and when you go in for the oil change all you need to pay is labour

I concur. It is not always easy for people to locate the recommended oil grade, but if you do then perhaps doing what most do, is best. And that is to order a full case of it. ;)
Some folks claim some luck in finding Mobil1 at some autoparts stores (NAPA, PEPBoys, etc) and even Walmart. Did you pay for the shipping or was it free?

As per Honda's service bulletins, the use of a lesser grade should only be performed on a temporary basis and should not be consired as a suitable long term replacement for the recommended oil grade.

My local Wal-Mart SuperCenter here in California has Mobil 1 0W20 in stock. It's on the shelf with the others. I've noticed that the smaller Wal-Mart's don't have it but the SuperCenters seem to.

ChrisG,

How's the price? On the west coast of Canada, at Lordco's, I found Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20 (synthetic), for $8.99 (Canadian), lots in stock. Those are US quart measure, about 946 ml if I remember correctly. The Honda dealer's parts department price for 1 liter of (non-synthetic?) Honda 0W-20 was $8.85.

Just a few years back I was find 10W-30 in 4 liter bottles for $5.99, Quaker State or Castrol, sniff...

Wally World sells Mobil 1 0/20 for $5.50/qt, or a 5 qt jug of Mobil 1 5w/20 for $25(prices rounded off). My Honda dealer did not recommend synthetic oil until the eng. was driven about 15,000 miles for break-in purposes.

This is sort-of on the topic:

Has anyone else noticed that Service A consists only of oil change, not oil and filter change? In other words, oil filters are to be changed only on alternate oil changes. That is as outlined in the owner's manual.

I'm not sure what our previous Honda owner's manuals said on this. I've always changed the filter, at each oil change I did, and the dealership(s) have done likewise. Anyone recall if this oil filter change at alternate oil changes is something new, or has it alway been the norm? Maybe I just had it drilled in to me:

Changing the oil? Change the filter!

My feel is that Honda is guiding people towards longer service intervals (through the on-board computer control of service timing), and with oil filter changes at alternate oil changes: reducing the burgeoning landfill issues.

I looked again yesterday at the local Wal-Mart Supercenter here in Southern California and Mobil 1 0W20 is on the shelf and costs $5.92 per quart. Add 8.25% for tax.
