Oil Change Question

Created July 20, 2007, at 5:55 pm by dnamrnatrna

I just had my oil changed in my HCH at the dealer. I used Redline synthetic 5W – 20, which according to the manual is OK. I thought I would increase my mileage, but I lost nearly 10 miles per gallon by doing this. I am wondering if the small viscosity difference caused the problem. Or, could the mechanic have poured in all 4 quarts and overfilled the crank case where the crank shaft bumps the top layer of oil??? Is this possible? Any thoughts?

Indeed. The recommended oil is 0W20. The 5W20 is only to be used as a substitute on exceptional cases where 0W20 is not available.
Almost every HCH-II owner I know of that has tried 5W20 reported a measurable loss in fuel economy.

Also, overfilling can also cause a loss in fuel economy.
