New battery warning

I just installed a replacement battery and kit for my 03 Prius. First the gas emmision tube was too small and didn't reach the battery. Second, the car starts up, but stalls the first time. Then I turn it on and it stays on, but the battery warning light comes on and stays on. Don't know why.
