MPG display accuracy

Created May 28, 2008, at 10:05 pm by Ryball78

Hey everyone!

I bought an '08 Honda Civic Hybrid a couple months ago and I was wondering if anyone else has noticed a discrepancy between the numbers on the MPG display on the dash and calculated MPG? Every time I fill up, I calculate the MPG just to see how close it is to what my MPG display is showing, and it is consistently 2+ MPG higher than the display. Does anyone know how accurate the display is? I'm assuming calculating would be more accurate (and I like it when my display is showing 48 mpg, and I calculate 50 mpg)!

If anyone has any thoughts or have noticed the same thing, I'd appreciate some input.

Thanks!

The Civic Hybrid II is one of the few hybrids (in fact, the only one I know) with a mileage display that actually under-estimates its true mileage. In other words, the displayed mileage is 1-2 MPG more conservative than the tank hand computed mileage.

This is a well known HCH-II attribute... which while not perfect is not too bad either... especially when you see several other hybrids doing exactly the opposite on a regular basis (Camry and Prius for example) ;)

Cheers

Our mileage is usually slighty better than the car's prediction, but not by much. Also, it's fairly consistant.

I have the HCH-I and it is either dead on the money or a couple mpg over the calculated, I guess when they came out with the HCH-II they decided to make the software underestimate that way you feel better when you see the calculated mpg. LOL
