LEATHER IN AN OTHERWISE ECO CAR IS NOT ECO! LET CAR MAKERS KNOW!
Created November 16, 2009, at 9:10 pm by Jameth
A Toyota Hybrid is great way to express caring to our Earth.
However, the higher models only come in LEATHER.
LEATHER IS NOT ECO, IS TOXIC, UNCOMFORTABLE, CRUEL!
Put pressure on Toyota to offer NON-LEATHER Prii!
LEATHER IS EXTREMELY NOT ECO. Takes tremendous amounts of water, fuel, food, land, energy, waste and pollution to grow cows for food and leather. Believe it or not, Eco-wise you are actually better off being a Vegan Hummer driver than an omnivorous Prius driver. I WANT MY HIGH END NON-LEATHER PIRUS. And I am NOT alone. Ed Begley is a Vegan too.
LEATHER IS TOXIC. Leather needs to have toxic chemicals added to it to prevent it from breaking down into compost. Leather workers have the highest incidence of prostate cancer. The chemically sensitive can not sit in leather cars without getting sick.
LEATHER IS NOT HIGH END. IT IS UNCOMFORTABLE TO MOST. The majority of people prefer soft cushy fabric to leather. Leather is HOT in summer, COLD in winter, not soft like high quality fabric, and your stuff slides around on it. Also less durable. Why sit on a chemically laden dead cow skin when you could sit on teddy-bear like fabric!
LEATHER IS CRUEL. Anyone person with morals who has seen the unfathomable cruelty that cows go through before and during the removal of their skin (leather) would never buy or wear leather again! It will make you sick and want to do something about it!
Leather has a perceived "thing" to it. Most high-end cars come with it as standard equipment. This is due to impression, NOT preference. Honda FCX Clarity comes with Bio plant fabric. However, only a few hundred are available. Honda Insight comes withOUT leather but not a Prius. Prius currently clearly best choice for obtainable hybrid car. Let us hard-core eco-ethical-moral people have high-end Prius IV and V's with interior that are consistent with the otherwise eco nature of a Prius.
Toyota, you do so much right. Please show that you truly care about the environment, health, compassion, and your customers. Do the right thing and axe leather from any Hybrid car. Offer it as a build to order option if you think you really must (no Prius driver will miss leather - they will appreciate the better seats and lower price). You could even make MORE profit on the non-leather Prii.
Also, you could advertise that you have NON-leather seats for the reasons I mentioned. Use it as a sales tool. We offer more comfy seats, we care, we are TOYOTA! Hear us Roar! Talk about GREAT Public Relations! This would make you look SO GOOD!
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jameth Sheridan

Cloth seats are sooooo vanilla.

Actually, I paid extra for the "endangered animal" trim package.
Harp Seal leather seats, with Spotted Owl feather stuffing, Narwhal Tusk Steering Wheel with Whooping Crane Beak buttons and Snow Leopard skin floor mats.

That Narwhal Tusk steering wheel must suck in an accident

Using chemicals guaranteed to destroy the ozone layer, the Narwhal tusk is softened, and bent into a circle, forming the ring of the steering wheel. The bent tusk is then stiffened into a rigid ring shape by being boiled in Dolphin blubber.

I love my leather seats and love a nice big juicy steak.

Plus leather seats get very hot and stick to your skin in the summer. And they're so much harder and stiffer than cloth seats. I find leather seats to be ridiculously uncomfortable. I know a lot of people like them, but I'll never understand it.

Thanks for posting this.
I have never understood the disparity evidenced by Toyota in including leather seating in their Prius model line. This inconsistency has been extended to their badge-engineered Lexus Hybrid (HS) which, although claims to have plant-based seating internals, is clad in leather.
Volkswagen has a much better alternative in their turbo diesel-engine equipped vehicles. While being infinitely more fun to drive than the Prius, the Jetta TDI does not even offer leather seating as an option.

I hate my leathers seats I'm allergic to the chemicals they use to keep them from damaging

I hated the leather seats in the one I test drove.
I disagree about the relative 'greenness' of leather. After all, they'd just throw it into hotdogs if they didn't make leather out of it.

Hey! Hold on just a minute, J'th.
What makes you think the majority of the public prefers fabric? And exactly what do you suggest, as a better use, for the millions of tons of cow hide, that's produced each year, as a by product of the meat industry? Everyone I know prefers leather to cloth. Are you really sure that the cow suffers, as the skin is removed? IT'S DEAD!!!
Are you going to employ the millions of people employed in the leather industry? No?
And please, don't bring up Ed Begley. He's certifiable, and should be commited.
Now, if I can just lay my hands on one of those narwal steering wheels. MMM MMMM MMM!

What part of that monstrously expensive hybrid battery is earth friendly?
If you were really concerned about the Earth, you'd sell your prius and ride your bike to work.
Oh, I have a leather seat on my bicycle too. And the brakes work. LOL

Ok, another mouth-breathing, two digit IQ, stooge of the oil companies just posted.
Nickel-Metal Hydride battery. Does the element NICKEL ring a bell? NmH batteries are FULLY recyclable. AND the recycling company can make a PROFIT recycling the battery. With Lithium batteries coming in a couple more years (it's not even a heavy metal!).
AND... Prius battery is actually a PACK of 20 separate batteries. Each individual battery can be removed from the pack and replaced as needed.
Now, if you go to Toyota, they just try to sell you the entire set of batteries ($3,500+), but there are a large number of after market battery shops that will dissasemble and repair your Prius battery for a MUCH lower price.
Oh, yes. The first three years I drove my Prius, I SAVED just a little under 800 gallons of fuel consumption. If I keep the car 8 years, I will use 2,000 gallons LESS gasoline.

I was researching for my next Prius and I just found this out myself. I cannot believe you cannot get a top end Prius without leather. I don’t wtf are they smoking at Toyota but I’ll take some.

Thank you for this. I would like a Prius, but I will not compromise and get a car with leather seats. It's disgusting!!!

Leather is a must for me and for others who are allergic to dustmites. The fabric seats retain dust and dustmites and can make some people extremely ill. Plus it is just dirtier! (no matter how often they clean and vacuum)

And one other inconvenient fact for PETA; do you know how many cattle are slaughtered each year to make leather? NONE! Leather is basically an unwanted byproduct of the Meat Packing Industry. Cattle ranching is based on FOOD PRODUCTION. Go to a leather goods store, raw unprocessed leather is cheaper (per yard) than many cotton linens. It's the processing and finishing of the leather that makes it expensive. Raw leather is dirt cheap, because there is so much unused leather left over from turning "moo" into double whoppers.

Actually, leather is no longer "just" a byproduct from the meat factory. There is so much demand for leather goods thats cows are purely bred for their skins. Worryingly, when in India in 2010..you know the country that is meant to deem cattle as a sacred being, i saw lots of cows being herded for miles and miles purely for their skins. when they were too tired to walk the nice indian boys rubbed spices in their eyes or snapped their tails to get them to move.
As for you comment re suffering? yes sadly some do as they are not killed properly prior to them being skinned. We can kid ourselves that animals who are slaughtered for our use are treated humanely.....um...no they're not. You will actually find the conditions in an animal testing lab more humane and ethical than the meat and leather industries.
perhaps if we all took some self responsibility for once and actually researched how leather gets into our car seats or the McDonald's burgers we eat are actually produced then we could make our own minds up about whether to purchase these products...not just believe what we are told by the world of consumerism and their bollocks advertising!
