Investing in hybrid technology

I'm interested in purchasing a hybrid vehicle although I'm still in the investigative state.
However, another thought comes to mind... Investing in the up and coming technology. The first thing that comes to mind would be a mutual fund as that is generally "safer". I would also like to find a list of the developing companies so I could investigate them and pick one or more that I think show potential for growth. Think back to when Microsoft was getting off the ground.
