IMA light

Created March 20, 2009, at 4:13 am by hempdyed

So the other day the IMA light came on and the dealership charged me $180 to just to tell me the battery is dying and its gonna cost about another $2800 for that fix. The vehicle is a 2004 civic hybrid with around 105k miles on it. I know the honda warranty appears to only cover IMA issues up to 80k but I was doing some research and found little bits about people saying that in california the warranty is extended automatically to 150k miles. Does anyone know the details about this "green state" extended warranty? Does this apply to my car or am I stuck with a hefty repair bill?

Hi HEMPDYED;

Sorry to hear about the pack failure. I believe you are correct with regards to the extension in CA. I suggest you visit another dealer and hear what they have to say and see what they can do for you. Take notes of the names and the things the dealers say and contact American Honda in writing and CC the letter to the dealer too.

Is your car equipped with a CVT or a Manual Transmission?
The reason I ask this is because it can make a bit of a difference.

Now, if the car is in good overall shape then I would contemplate getting it replaced since the new packs and BCM's are much improved and longer lasting than the original ones and since the pack costs as much as a regular transmission replacement in a typical car this may be good for another 150-200K miles. In this case I would go for it.

Cheers;

Our 2003 Honda Hybrid Civic had its IMA battery go out at 80,500 eventhough it was a sales pitch that they were tested to 150K. They replaced it for free under the lawsuit agreement that Hybrid owners I guess filed. Now 20,000 miles later it has gone out again and now they want $3600. I am doing some research and hoping to get any help I can get.

I own a 2003 HCH which I purchased new. Six years and 153,500 miles later the IMA light made an appearance for the first time ever. I didn't take the car in right away because of my busy schedule, but about a week later the engine light came on and I decided to make time to take it in. The car was not acting up or driving any differently than normal. The battery was still charging and assisting normally, but I figured I didn't want to wait for a trifecta with the warning lights before getting a diagnosis.
The dealership, which IMHO has always been very generous with comping parts and labor on my vehicle, informed me the IMA was deteriorating and that I had a bad catalytic converter (the 4th bad CC). The price tag for fixing the two problems came to $4200 and would take a couple of days. I was in shock and in no way ready to drop that kinda money on fixing a 6 year old car that only cost $21,000 new. The tech said he understood and I should consider trading it in before spending that kind of money for repairs. They were (again) extremely gracious and didn't charge me anything for the diagnosis.
Long story short I have put another 500 miles on the car and still no problems. It's not acting up in any obvious way. Both the warning lights (IMA & engine) have since gone out and the car is still running fine. I am not sure where to go from here, but where ever it is I will be driving my 2003 HCH.

I have the exact issue as nebrsmithers. One slight difference....a couple months ago, my check engine light blinked on and off for a few days, so I took it to AutoZone for a free OBD check. It revealed a bad MAP Sensor. I didnt think it was a bad thing so I continued to drive, until a couple nights ago the IMA Light came on. So I again took it to the AutoZone, had them read it and came up with the error code p0420...Catalyst System Below Threshold. (a bad catalytic converter).

Today I purchased the MAP sensor and will install it tomorrow morning. It seems the MAP sensor affects the oxygen and fuel mixture, which can also affect the 02 sensor, and can also be reflected as a catalytic converter failure. And Im pretty sure the MAP sensor has almost completely failed due to the graduating error codes. There was no error code reflecting anything wrong witht thebatteries. Interesting how things can be triggered by other instances. The gentleman at the Honda dealer here told me that the MAP sensor could also affect the IMA as well. so we'll see.

Ill repost to let you know the outcome.

FYI...MAP SENSOR from Honda...$92.00....Autozone...$54.00

My IMA light came on my 2005 Accord and I took it in to the dealership. They charged me $100 to re-flash some chip and re-set some parameters. My car only has 55k on it and I think this is some kind of scam? Seems like an excuse to force owners to take their car to the dealership.

I have a 2006 Honda Accord Hybrid. I was driving this morning (in the snow) and both my check engine and IMA light came on. I have been searching for an hour and no website says what the IMA light exactly is. Can some one please tell me what the IMA light means?

Joanie

Just yesterday my IMA light came on my 2003 HCH and I took it to the dealership to learn that it will cost $2500 to have the battery pack replaced. Note: several months ago my engine light came on and was told that the sensor was bad and would cost $450 to replace, which of course I didn't. Why replace a bad sensor if it doesn't effect the performance of the car. Now, after reading Joey and nebrsmithers I'm starting to think that these sensors are causing the problems.
I'm eager to hear how Joey's replacement of the map sensor turned out. Joey if you do repost please email me directly at JoanieBatten at comcast dot net. I would like to know how difficult it might be to replace the sensor myself. Thanks!
Would appreciate hearing from others with similar problems as well!

Gabe,

If your car is still under warranty, go to the dealer. If not, go to a local mechanic or Autozone and get your OBD codes read and let us know what they are.

I have a 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid, bought in October 2008. Four months after the purchase of the vehicle, the IMA light came on.
Under the full warrantee, they took my car to inspect for a couple of days and gave me a loan car. They found the problem with the IMA and did what they called "update the software."
Even though the IMA/Engine light went away after the software update, it came back on 4 more times within the same year. The dealership did a "software update" in all of those times but told me for different reasons.
Now I started to think about the Honda Service Quality which is questionable to me. And I think it's unfair to the consumer who spends nearly $30,000 for the Honda product and has to deal with this kind of problem.

If anyone has a lead as to how to fight with this kind of unfair treatment, please provide suggestions on here or feel free to email me at TopGammarabutr at CS dot COM.

I will appreciate it.

I had a Honda 2004, Honda Hybrid. The IMA light started coming on after 80K. You can reset the switch by disconnecting your Regular battery for 30 minutes. Then reconnect it. Then drive slow for about ten minutes, and the IMA barrety will start to recharge normally. I have found 3 things that cause this to happen. Cold or foggy conditions, first, second fast excelleration in cold weather. Third, thinking about it and what it will cost to fix it. I traded my problem away and got a good deal on trade, I sold it back to the same dealer I bought it from. No harm no foul. I paid 21,000 for it new, got six years of good use out of it. But this problem with the IMA system seems to be a back end profit center for the dealers. The dealer will charge you 168.00 to clear the codes and do iagnostics. The problem will persist there is really no rhyme or reason, that I discovered except the cold. I wasn't going to put 4700.00 into a 6 year old car. I hope the new owner buys an extended warrenty and sticks it to Honda. I was alway a big fan of Honda, and always suggested my friends buy what I thought was the best value. Seems I was wrong. I will never buy another Honda.

There are companies that specialize in rebuilding the battery packs and they are way cheaper than buying new from honda. If our battery ever goes out, that's the way I will go. We bought the car used, no sense buying a new battery for it at that cost.

Hi, i just bought a 03 honda civic hybrid straight from the owner. It had about 103,000 miles when i bought it about a month ago. My IMA light just came on this morning. The manual says that when the light shows up that i should take it to the dealer. Has anyone had their IMA battery replaced? If so how much does it cost??? Please let me know... I'm a poor college student and I CANT afford any problems right now :(

Hi,
So what happened to your Hybrid now after 500 miles driving without changing the electric battery? I wonder the same because my Hybrid 06's IMA light came on for the 1st time after only 83K miles for a couple days, and now the engine light is one. Should I ignore the problem or take it to the dealer?

2004 Honda Hybrid 114,616 miles, my IMA light came on for the first time on Sunday. I took it to a Honda dealer on Tuesday. I wast told the the secondary cataltic converter and oxygen sensors 1 and 2 have failed, the cost $1,777. My Uncle Bill told me that if the converter is bad, that I should here something rattling around when I first start the engine up. He also suggested that maybe only the sensors need be replaced.

My grandaughter graduated this year and plans to go away to college in August and needed a car. Three days ago I purchased a 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid with over 200k miles. Because the car had only one owner (according to the seller) and it gets great MPG, I thought it was be the prefect. The seller wanted $3900. but sold it to me for $3600. During test drive I noticed that the check engine light was on and brought it to his attention. There were no other lights on at that time. He said the light was not a problem and he would get the light off and take car through Maryland inspection if I was seriously interested in purchase. He inspected the car and there was no light when I made the purchase then, one day later, both the check engine light and the IMA light came on and he's not willing to help with either. What can or should I do. I believe he intentionally stuck me with a car he knew had problems. Any help?

My IMA light just came on on my 2006 Civic, I did get a recall notice that the software needed to be unpdated but I hadnt done anything because the last time I got a recall notice and called the dealer they said they didn't know of a recall and brushed me off. So I guess I should have gotten the software update even if I had to push them to pay attention to me. I sure hope they will do it for free and that it fixes my problem. The Lord knows I don't have $3000 to get a new battery. Someone please tell me they had good experience with the software update.

I have 03 HCH as well and my IMA light just came on at 124,000 miles. I took into the dealer and they stated that it would be $2400 to replace the battery and blue book value is at $5000. My dad suggested that I just drive it, since I have not had any issues out of the car. Your post as made me feel better about following his advice.

I have a 2003 Civic Hybrid with 128,000 miles on it.

My IMA light has been coming on and going off now for a while. I was told by my dealer that the batteries were starting to fail, but the car still functions just fine.

As far as the check engine light, my hybrid also has issues with that as well, however I found it was caused by getting fuel with ETHANOL in it versus NO Ethanol.

We took a trip to Minnesota and my car started to get almost 50 mpg. i stopped in and asked a gas station if their gas had ethanol in it. They said NO. No wonder I was getting such good gas mileage.

On the way back to Kansas, my check engine light came on. Took it to the dealer they said it was a bad sensor. I said to them how I had been using REAL gas up in Minnesota and when I got closer to home and ethanol it came on. They said go a tank or two longer on the "bad" gas and see if the light goes out.

Sure enough the light went out never to be seen again.

Good luck- still wondering about my IMA light though.

I have read that you needed a catalytic converter change if ever. Try some good brands like Eastern Brand and the like. I'm sure that you can really get things done by changing it by a good thing. Hope that all is well by now.

Last week my IMA and Battery lights came on when I stated my car. I have a 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid with 46,746 miles. Called my Northwest Honda dealer in Maryland and they told me to bring it in. They ran it throught their testing equipment and said they could not find anything wrong. They charged me $105 for the testing. To date I have not seen a reoccurance of the problem. I know they disconnected the battery as the colck was not reset. I have a feeling I have not seen the end of this problem.

First, a benchmark of the automobile. 2005 Civic Hybrid, 141k miles. Trip odometer reset, reading 250 miles at 41.6 mpg. A/C running and driven at interstate speeds. Been having recent trouble with intermittent IMA, Brake and ABS lights. Either all three are on, or all three off. The car has been experiencing dead batteries , both the IMA and standard 12 v system battery, when parked overnight. The 12v is new, as the previous had a bad cell, also during the IMA intermittent light problems.
At the time of the trip odometer reset, I had just changed the CVT fluid and engine oil. I had started the car and allowed it to idle for about 15 minutes prior to the fluid changes. Shut off engine, placed on jack stands and slid under the car. Engine had not warmed enough to actuate the radiator fan thermostat switches. Outside air temp approx 80 degrees. While under the car about an hour later I heard what sounded like a relay cycling about every 20 seconds. I could not tell where under the hood it came from, but seemed loudest near the right front wheel, near what I presume is the assist/generator unit. Are there relays or some sort of contactor in this unit? I have read in other forums about an under hood IMA relay to remove to allow some sort of system reset, but no information as to it's exact location.
Also there seems to ba a bit of uncertainty on all the posts that I have read as to what the IMA light actually indicates as far as a fault. Is there any way to pin down these symtoms without the dealer involved? Autozone sounds like a good bet, but the person I talked with said that the fault has to be 'on' in order for get a fault diagnostic code.

or 150,000 miles....then I called Honda themselves and they said as far as they Knew it was still 8 ywears from purchase and 80,000 miles.................??????????????????

Thankfully, we bought the extended warranty. We've had multiple issues with our 2004 Civic Hybrid. All covered under the extended warranty. Just before the extended warranty ended and 78,000 miles, our IMA light came on. We took it in, and the battery had deteriorated. We're so thankful we had the extended warranty and it was replaced free of charge. Our SRS unit went out at 76,000 miles, again fixed free of charge. We have a manual transmission and were having problems putting the car into reverse. When we had the car checked, it was a faulty transmission. Since the car was built in Japan, Honda wanted the faulty transmission to be flown back to Japan. And we got a new transmission. Yes, we paid $21,000 for the car, but the gas mileage we've attained has been well-worth the warranty hassles. We hope to get many, many more good years out of it. It now has 88,000 miles on it.

I have a '04 HCH with 127000 miles and the light has been on. I bought the car in CA and live in CA. Cars performance has been deteriorating and milage decreasing, power decreasing as well. Went to Woodland Hills Honda paid the $127.00 diagnostic fee for them to tell me that it would be $2,800.00 for new battery and did I want to go ahead and fix that today?? what? . It seems I have the SULEV not PZEV thus not qualified based upon the Honda's decline based on my VIN number.

They suggested that I just sell the car !

I need to find out what dealer Janet went to.. and lawsuit information.

Honestly, ZenMaiden, don't believe what they're telling you. First and foremost, call Honda America Corporate, and ask them to PUT IN WRITING that you're car is rejected by your VIN #. It's an absolute lie - so they won't be willing to put it in writing. It's the EXACT same thing that happened to me. Keep on Honda Corporate. Ask for it to be escalated to a manager. But DO NOT believe what they're telling you. In reality, you shouldn't have to pay the diagonistic fee, either.

Have you looked at the sticker under the hood of your car? If so, take a pic, and feel free to email it to me. I can look at tell you if it's really covered or not.

I've got a 2000 Honda Insight with only 42,000 miles on it-- I haven't driven it any differently than when I first got it (brand new). The IMA went out 4 years ago, and was replaced under warranty. Since then, it has gone out every 1.5 years, and been replaced by Honda Corporation USA for free-- until now-- it has just gone out again-- but all the dealerships tell me that HCUSA no longer has any interest in my car because it's over 10 years old. Doesn't it seem that there's something wrong with the recharging system, as opposed to the IMA battery? The dealership actually told me that I don't drive it enough to recharge properly!

lorrwill

This is late, I know but for others who stumble across this page with the same question IMA stands for Integrated Motor Assist, the fancy name for the hybrid system. As I recall, the dealer said it refer not only to the battery itself but the sensors and everything else associated with it, hence why they have to down load the error codes to see what part or parts are malfunctioning.

I had my first battery replaced 2 years ago under this rule.

The IMA light is came on this past Saturday and is still on. I am hoping that a combination of
A. only having a little over 80k miles
B. being less than 10 years since I purchased it and
C. that the dealership replaced it so recently
will mean that if battery number 2 is whack, I will get it fixed for $0.

Like some other folks before me, the car is not running any differently than before the light came on. I hope it is just a sensor or something simple they can fix quickly. I hate being without my car.

As an aside, I am in California where we get triple digit summers. I am very paranoid about heat damaging the hybrid battery so I pamper it. I have covered parking at home, a garage at work and hunt for shade everywhere else when it is hot outside. And have the custom cut sun reflectors for the windows, as well as keeping up on all the scheduled maintenance. From the comments above and that here I am looking at a fault with my second battery make me a little disappointed with Honda.

(I am not sure what kind of warranty battery number 2 came with without looking in my files.)

We have a 2003 HCH as well and had the same problem. Had the IMA light go on and then the Check engine. After shelling out over $200 for the diagnosis, they wanted me to replace the battery. I decided against it and they sent me on my way. Then 2 months later, after a long weekend drive (300 miles) both the IMA and check engine lights have turned off by themselves and the MPG has improved. Seems whatever the problem was is gone (hopefully). Regardless, I am waiting for Re-Involt to release the Li-ON battery replacement for my car which I will gladly do.

I think the diagnosis charge was a load of bull as this is a problem of their crappy battery parts and having to pay them to tell me what I already suspected was a waste of time and money. While I love my HCH, I think honda needs to go a lot further in customer service and taking ownership on the crap parts they created.

Hello,
2007 HCH here. (50000 mi)
Honda sent a "recall" notice last summer for a software upgrade that turned out was to extend the life of the battery. Problem is that it turns mileage to garbage (32 mph) and, according to others, by 70,000 mi my car probably won't be safe to drive.
go to "HONDA CORPORATION HAS NO HONOR" on Facebook.
And google other blogs for the nightmares that have happened to HCH owners.

The upgrade is so that Honda doesn't have to honor the 150000 mi battery warranty (Calif, where I live). So instead they put in a fix that destroys the mileage and ends up destroying the car because the gas engine isn't designed to do what it's expected to do.

From reading your posts, I "understand" why Honda would want to do the software "fix". Obviously the battery doesn't last as warranted. But their fix is worse than the cure.

Please don't let this go. Honda needs to fix this! My sister asked me why dont I just trade it in and get a Prius before too many people know about the HCH nightmares. It's because why would I want someone else to unknowingly get stuck with my nightmare. Honda needs to fix it.

Hi Kathy,

You are right. My car's IMA light was on and I took it to a mechanic. He checked the IMA battery and told me battery was no good any more and needed to be replaced. I took it to the dealer and they installed the upgrade software to avoid replacing my battery. Because of the software upgrade, the light is not on any more, but my car is driving only with the gas engine and it turned my mileage to garbage too. After reading all complain, I think I should file a law suit against the dealership that did not replace my battery. Everyone should do the same. the software upgrade is a scam to shut off the IMA light to avoid replacing the battery . Good Luck and keep me posted.

Just curious - are you the original owner? And how many miles are on your car? I'm amazed if you're still on the original battery and have typical mileage for an 03. Small consolation but at least you got 4 more years of use out of your car than us 2007 owners! In any case, if your battery is still under warranty, insist on getting it replaced and DON'T accept a software upgrade (altho I think they just do that for 06 thru 08).

When I get around to it (soon I hope), I will write letters to BBB, Honda America, etc., as suggested by the Facebook page "Honda Corporation Has no Honda". There are copies of his letters than we can modify as necessary for our individual situation. If Honda America, the BBB and National Highway Safety Board, etc., get enough written, formal complaints, maybe Honda will finally do the right thing, or maybe the BBB, etc., will realize that Honda IS at fault.

Isaac

If your IMA light comes on DO NOT get the software update. It is obvious what the upgrade does. It reduces the cars dependence on the battery and immediately drops your gas mileage. They will not take the software update off and it will decrease your mpg by approx 5-6. Mine went down immediately from 42 to 37. Nice update huh? Just Honda trying to decrease the dependence of the car on the battery so that they will not have to warranty it. I would do the same if I owned Honda and wanted to make a big profit but I can tell you one thing... I will not be buying another.

I have 120000 plus miles on it. cant complain. still get between 38 and 42 mpg. kinda scared of taking it to the dealer, been drivin with the IMA light on for about 8 months now. Only problem i really have is tha the battery rins down fster. it will re-charge but takes a little more and it hates city driving. that is when the battery really goes down fast.

I have a 2007 Honda Accord Hybrid. I purchased my car new Sept 2007. I recently hit 73,333 miles. Since May 2009 (the car had less than 35K miles on it) my check engine light has gone on and off. The error codes were PO300, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306 (all 6 cylinders misfiring). (This is the constant codes that appear.) The car was driving absolutely fine. They performed a Fuel injector service and charged me $130. (Mistake on my part yes, just giving background info.)

Fast forward to June 2010, (yes all the while mysterious check engine appearing and then disappearing) I get fed up with this and bring it to the dealer again and they give me a courtesy car and perform a software update (Service Bulletin 10-007 2/3/10). No charge. Note- at this point ONLY the check engine light has come on, no IMA light.

January 2011 I was at dealer for an oil change and mentioned the "mysterious" light has been visiting me again and they said it might be a sensor which would require time with the car locating the one that needs to be fixed (all costing me money). The car works fine so I disregard.

I have a case with Honda Customer Service. Basically they said (latest conversation was Feb 2011) the dealer did the software update- that didn't work; they suggested time with it to see if it is a sensor so if I do not listen to them, or go to another dealer and get a second opinion than Customer Service can't help. So basically I need to shell out the money first and then MAYBE they will continue to listen to my story.

Present day- for the first time the check engine light AND the IMA came on. Took it to the dealer, they made an appt for next week when they can give me a courtesy car. They said since I already got the update, I might need a new battery, but that it would be covered under warranty.

(I am sorry about the long story) My question is....since my constant indicator has been only the check engine light and this is the first time out of probably 25x the light coming on that it includes the IMA...do you think my issue might be more a sensor than the battery? Since the battery will be $0, I am thinking of letting them do it, but if the check engine light comes on again after that, I can conclude it is a sensor. (right?)

Any suggestions/advice would be SO appreciated! Direct email jcolorfulgardens at aol dot com

Any help for AZ??

I live in Arizona and my IMA light just came on at 84,000 miles on my 08' civic hybrid. Because of the extreme heat in AZ and other southern states I was wondering if there are any lawsuits that have made Honda extend their warranty on their batteries on other states besides CA?? Batteries do not last long here.

I bought the Carmd tester the other day. I plugged it in tonight to see what it said before I go to the dealer tomorrow for oil change and tire rotation. It stated that the check engine light was off. But it also gave me code U9928 F-Can Malfunction, and stated that I needed to have the hybrid intergrated motor assist replaced. The car is a 2007 HCH with just over 90,000 miles. I bought it new, and I live in Lancaster Ohio and I think I understood that they extended my warranty to 100,000 miles due to a lawsuit. I have not lights on and it appears to be charging. They flashed the computer a couple of years ago and my mileage tanked. I am getting 38 mpg. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions.

I bought a 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid about three weeks ago from the dealer. The check engine light came on when we were about 10 miles from our house the night that we bought the car and brought it home. The dealer asked us to take it back to him, and he had it updates, which cleared out the check engine light. We picked the car back up from him about a week and a half ago, and haven't had any problems until tonight. The check engine light, the battery light, and the IMA lights all came on tonight. In addition, I was watching the battery monitors and it didn't assist, charge, or have any battery life at all on my way home tonight. Any suggestions? There is no warranty on this car, as we bought it from a small dealership and he doesn't do warranties. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

I live in the UK.. I see that the majority of people posting on here are from usa etc....

We had a recall on our HCH 2006 in February this year on the battery. Apparently it needed replacing as it would appear the original battery had a manufacture fault. So it was recalled, and battery was changed. Didnt know if thats of any use.. or if we are ahead or behind the states in terms of recalls....

Anyway, my problem is nothing to do with the IMA Light.

I have a brake management light that keeps coming on. According to the manual it says leak in the system, brake fluid or brake pads need checking... All have been checked and checked again, brake pads were replaced. Dealer cleared the codes, and still it comes on... Not on the first journey of the day though... The first journey is always fine... its after that.. Sometimes it comes on as soon as you touch the brake, sometimes it doesnt come on until you are braking for a length of time...

Anyone else had this issue and found the remedy for it, before we take it back to the dealer for them to try various things, costing us a fortune to only find out that hasnt worked either.

I have a 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid (original owner), and my IMA light went on today at 74K miles. I have been reading this forum and others like it, all with varying reports of warranty information. Then I went to Honda's site which listed all the warranty info pretty clearly:
http://www.honda.com/newsandviews/article.aspx?id=2003100849312

The warranty for 2004 HCH is shown as 10yrs/150K miles. I haven't called the Honda dealer yet, but I'm hoping there aren't any troubles getting it done for free, since it's on their own website after all.

@sean song
1 Hour of driving and got light on is not acceptable unless you bought is “as is” condition. 03.. It could’ve been then the dealer has you by your neck. Welcome here.. Wherever you came from. And wherever here is.. Should bought none hybrid and shopped around.

Do not keep it. The dealer knows what is going on and is just trying to dump you with continuous problems so they can get it off their lot and into a service dept to make more money off you. Run while you can.

OK, here is some information about getting a software upgrade on your 2004 civic hybrid. We got the O2 sensor update then 3 days later the IMA and CEL light came on. I checked the codes (1600 1433) and reset it. Every thing was fine again (no recalls, etc). Then 2 weeks later the complete IMA system went off line with the IMA and CEL lights on with the only code of 1600.

Went to the dealer and found out the O2sensor update was a 2 phase update with only the first part applied. The dealer told admitted to the mistake and re-applied both updates. The car (so far) is now back to normal.

I have an IMA light and check engine light on and the dealer in Florida is offering me a half price special of 1200 to replace the battery that he claims the manufacturer offers for vehicles under 12okm. My 04 HCH has 119km. I wanted to wait until January because of taxes but they said no that the deal would then be 2400to replace it at that time. I already replaced the CC with the same lights on. I am going to autozone today and get the codes read. The car does sit in the summer for a month to 2 months. Shady yard but Florida! Performance is good except that the gas mileage is not what it was when I bought it.
Any advice?

2003 HCH (200k) original owner.
The IMA light 1st came on just past 100k, Honda replaced the battery. So now at 200k, my IMA/CEL comes on occasionally. Three times so far. The IMA goes off later the same day or the next. The CEL will stay on for another day or so. I have not needed to disconnect the battery to reset them. Not sure if it still has the software or was flashed. The car hasn't been to a Honda dealer since 120k. The only thing I can think of that Honda could do to the software to "extend the life" of the battery is to lower the voltage threshold and wait for more battery cells to die before giving a warning.
At this point, I'm not giving Honda $4500 to replace the battery on a car with over 200k. I'm considering an after market battery which will be more like $2500, but I haven't seen any one comment on them.

I have just read this bog - thank god i found it. I have the same exact story - 2003 HCH just passed 150K and IMA and check engine light came on. At this point the car is worth less than the $3000 it would cost to fix it, and I would like to just drive it into the ground before I have to shell out for a new one. My question is - has anyone who has had the IMA/check engine combo come on had a total breakdown (the car, I mean ;)) or anything unsafe happen? I don't care about reduced mileage or a little engine drag - i just want to know if I can get a few more months out of this car without ending up on the side of the road with a dead car.

thanks

Hello,

Interested to see your comment. I have the same issue with IMA and engine lights. Dealer did a software update, but the lights come back the second day. Just curious how your experiment with disconnecting the battery goes...Thanks!

I've been reading all your problems and hope this info will help some of you>

Most of you seem to be having IMA and check engine light issues on cars that aren't worth the hefty $3000 fix. Before you get taken for a ride,, here's what to do. The Honda systems give spook codes once a while due to little shorts in the system or even a change of gas type for some reasons Honda has yet to explain.

>to reset IMA light> turn car off, remove key, in fuse box under the hood just above the 12v battery (regular battery) remove fuse #9 labelled 10 amp, which is located at the corner-most bottom right position of the 3X3 fuses in the middle of the console, for 60 seconds. re-insert fuse and star engine (IMA light should now be off) rev engine at about 3500 - 4000 rpm for about 5 minutes while in "park" position, until the IMA battery is almost full, then let engine idle (run) for 10 minutes to re-learn. drive around the block and park.

>to reset check engine light> disconnect 12v battery for 30 minutes (negative cable first) then re-connect (negative cable first).

Hope this helps.

These resets will help determine if the problem is persistent (if lights eventually come back) at which point you should look into getting a replacement battery. These cars have a very good fuel economy so the investment in the end will pay off if the rest of the car can last the extra 100K miles.

Good Luck.

I've had the IMA and check engine light combo recently and was told to replace the IMA battery, i refused and have reset all my lights personally (no one else will do it for free) and will wait to see if they re-appear.

read my post in the blog for info on how to do it yourself.

My lights just came on also. 2004 HCH. First the Check Engine, then a few days later the IMA. Took it to Honda dealer nearby. They did the diagnosis for free, got codes P1600 and P1433. Car has just over 102,000. I had bought the car used (was leased previously) and got the Honda Car Care warranty, but that expired June 2011 & 100,000. Also got paperwork recently for Class Action Law Suite. It says the IMA battery warranty was extended 12,000 miles extra from Original (80,000), but I'm past that. Dealer says it will cost $2700 to replace. I asked them to Contact Honda to see if they would cover it, but I doubt the will. I'm going to call also. Did the 2 resets myself manually today & will see if the lights re-appear.

As someone else asked.... what harm would come with NOT fixing the IMA Battery? Other than lower gas mileage?

just an update - my IMA light turned off about a week ago, and two days later the other light suddenly was not there when i started the car. i have been driving every day - i have a long commute, 60 miles each way, and thus far have neither seen nor felt anything different in the car - even the gas mileage doesn't seem to have been affected.

The IMA Light came on this Wednesday for the 1st time. I have a 2005 Honda Hybrid with 112,300 miles. I called the dealership and they are supposed to see it Monday.

After reading all the posts I am going to do the following:

1. I am not getting the software upgrade. My MPG has been as stated when I bought it! No problems. You can't drive a Hybrid like a regular car. I don't baby it by any stretch of the imagination but I'm not out there doing jack rabbit starts, speeding like crazy, or slamming on the brakes. I not a hyper miler, but I do watch what causes my mileage to flux. So, I am been extremely happy with the mileage. No way is that upgrade going to turn this car into a gas car only. I had asked for the upgrade Monday but that is not happening now.
2. I am going to have my hubby perform the unplug battery and the rest of the recommendations.
3. Going over those 3 class settlement forms I got recently.
4. Doing more research on this "mess". The dealership REALLY gets me mad and because I know exactly how you all feel about the line of bologna they give you. I have had it done to me.
5. I was planning on driving this car 150 miles this weekend. The little dealership lady ;) said they don't recommend it, but I could do it if I wanted. Well duh, I asked what would happen if I did, she said it might harm. I could tell it was a line. I got the impression the boys were out to an early lunch and she was covering her bases. After my husband does the disconnect battery stuff and the engine light (it's on too, but heck that thing goes on and off like a light switch (it's been looked at before).
Therefore, I will let you know what happens. But I will be danged if I am giving those bloodsuckers more money.

This is exactly what we are going to do before going to the dealership before Monday.
