How power-efficient are Hybrid/Electric vehicles?

***I'm writing a school essay about hybrid vehicles, so if you have any references to your claims please specify.***
I know that in a piston-engine, only 1 out 4 strokes per cylinder produces power. This means that generally speaking they arent very power-efficient.
How do electric motors and hybrid technologies compare to this? Aside from energy-loss to heat and noise or whatever else, how efficient are electric motors at converting the energy into motion?
