Honda Accord Hybrid Engine Problems

Created August 18, 2005, at 10:58 am by Anonymous

Is anyone having repeat problems with their engine light coming on and the engine running rough? I purchased and Accord Hybid in April and my car has already been flat bedded back to the dealership twice. I start it up only to have the engine light and battery light come on and the engine sound as if it is not running on all cylinders. The first time I was told it was a sensor and I'm still waiting for and answer after two days of being without my car. I am very diappointed in the cars reliability. Please let me know if anyone else is having a similar problem.

After 5 days and several phone calls I finely have a response from my local dealership. They had been waiting to hear from the Honda engineers and while they still are not sure what is wrong with my car they are going to replace the computer that interfaces with the electrical components of the car. The dealership believes that I will have my car back some time late Monday. This is the second time I have been without my car for over a week. I will not be recommending this car to anyone. Although I believe in the technology I don't believe that the local dealership knows enough about these vehicles.

For those of you who are contemplating buying Honda Hybrids.... here's my story. I leased a 2005 model Accord hybrid, and have been having problems ever since. The first months were fine, and then the humming noise started, as the weather got warmer. The dealership has no clue, and even after duplicating the annoying drone, they have the nerve to tell me thast it is normal. I wonder whether the Honda Engineers designed this piece of trash to be a torture chamber, as that is just what it is. I have read some forums since, and there are temp fixes, but Honda has still not come out with a bulletin or a recall. My first experience with Honda obviously sucks. Stay the hell away from Honda hybrids

I'm think I'm having the same problem as Daya with my 2005 hybrid Accord. Tune your stero to a quiet spot and turn the bass up as loud as it can go and it will sound just like the engine of my hybrid Accord. It's impossible to drive for long with that vibrating engine noise, it's that bad. The dealer is just playing games at this point. I took one of the techs for a drive and we both heard the sound clearly. He couldn't pinpoint what it was and said he'd never heard anything like it. Now, he says he can't reproduce the sound. I can't understand why that matters, as he couldn't figure it out by the sound the the first time. I just want it fixed. If anyone has any ideas, please post.

I have the same problem. I also have recieved a service Bulletin from the Honda Dealer on this. I will send anyone a copy if they email me. Its not a safety issue but a Noise Cacelation issue.

I have had the same problem with the noise. It's so bad my son hates riding in the car - it bothers his ears with the vibration. If you hit the gas pedal, it tends to stop but it can be constant. My Honda dealership said the engineers are "working on it" and that I'm not the only one but from a consumer who doesn't buy new cars every three years (last purchase 1997), I'd like to dump this car - loss or not.

My 05 has a rough idle and the engine light sometimes flashes at full throttle. The repair shop is a second home to it.

I've filed an official complaint with American Honda so they can track problems with my car. The next step might be to lemon law it. I can't be bringing the car in every month and I sure can sell it with the engine malfunctioning.

I'm sorry but you have realize that with thousands
of Honda Hybrids being sold every month that there
has to be some that have parts that are faulty.
I had an idea for hybrid buses 26 yrs ago and a
few yrs. ago spoke over nationwide radio on the
environmental benefits of having all hybrid vehicles.
I drove the very first Honda SU2000 that came into
the country in May 1999 while the other 5 that were
made stayed in Japan waiting for the test results.
I bought one of the original Honda Accord Hybrids
made last year in March. It was quite incredible.
Completely quiet and faster than anything imaginable. The take off isn't all that impressive about like a RX-8 or Porsche 924 But the top speed
and fuel economy blow away any high preformance car made. I suspect the dealers in the U.S. need to have some of the Japanese designers come here to
consult these questions. I think the fuel module can cause significant problems with running if its going faulty and the synergy system may not be grounded properly causing the noise. Good luck, If your car isn't flawless you need to take it back, I spent 40K on mine (36.8 + 3K on getting the 1st one which I suppose they meticulously tested)The GPS works better than any other one I've used.

"But the top speed and fuel economy blow away any high preformance car made"
Dude, you seriously need a Tesla (www.teslamotors.com). 0-60mph in ~4sec AND over 100 (effective well-to-wheels) mpg.

It's not an engine problem, it's due to a faulty ANC (active noise cancellation) unit. Tell your dealership to look up S/B 06-005.

In respons to Mic - it might be the fact that we spent a lot of money on a car only to have engine lights, towing, vibration noises, etc. drown out the beauty of a hybrid. On edmunds I found a site that lists the problem with the droning and there is a fix that supposedly is out there. However, when I brought all the documentation in to the dealer, they could only "put it on the service managers desk and he'll call". Like when? Today? Tomorrow? I got more frustrated and decided NOT to take it out on the woman with the feeble reply. I can't decide if I'm more frustrated with a car that is beautiful outside but definitely needs work inside, the dealership who's jacking me around knowing they'll have to fix it but not wanting to put out the $$ yet or Honda....

I have a 2005 Accord Hybrid that just came out of the shop. The check engine light and oil light illuminated and the car shook at the front end when making a sharp or U-turn (this happened three times in a 24-hour period... the temp fix was to turn the engine off, restart, and the car would operate normally). It was a faulty oil pressure sensor (regulator?). The dealer replaced it under warranty, but had the nerve to suggest that I take it home and drive it for 4 days until the part shipped! Of course, i refused and got a rental vehicle instead. Good luck to all with problems. I haven't noticed the noise cancellation problem, but I do hear an occassional rythmic tone from beneath the hood that is only audible when outside of the vehicle.

After a year of problems with my accord hybrid (engine problems and vibration noise when traveling 45-55 mph) I opted to trade the car in. I believe in the hybrid technology, but I had to cut my losses and get rid of the car. It was in the shop 4 times in less than a year and left me standed twice. I live in an area with limited public transprotation and I needed a reliable vehicle. My neighbor has the same car and has no problems with it. I hope to try a hybid vehicle again in a few years.

I have a 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid. I upgraded from the Honda Civic Hybrid, which I loved. The Accord is comfortable and handles well, but I've had the problem with the vibration roaring noise as well. I've had no other problems with the car. The dealership told me the noise is normal, but still did several software upgrades and replaced a sensor in the IMA. I don't hear the noise much anymore, but I don't know if that's because it's cooling down now (autumn) or that the problem has been fixed.
I still plan to call the dealership about the part listed to see if they replaced it.

We just bought a new Honda Accord Hybrid 2006, we are not getting the vibration/droning noise but we are getting a terrible popping, almost like a backfire when we accelerate the car after we have stopped at a light or turned the corner. The dealership tells us this is normal. It is so annoying, the car has been in the shop more than we have been able to drive it. Has anyone had this problem?

My wife's 2006 Honda Accord is making the same popping noise as one accelerates from a stop or into a turn. She loves the car, but that noise is very disturbing. We took it to the shop/dealer on 3/20, they duplicated the problem, but have no clue what is causing it. They said they needed to get another Accord Hybrid in to compare ours with it to see if they can diagnose the problem. Their lame excuse is that it possibly could be the characteristic of an Accord hybrid - if that's the case, we will be unloading it, and maybe not for another Honda! We also found out that the black book price on this car depreciated it 30% in just one year - buyer beware!

My 2006 HAH has similar symptoms. During light acceleration at approximately 20mph and 1800rpm, there is a pop / clunk that occurs. It may be also correlated to the IMA assist momentarily kicking in or out. Sadly, the noise is difficult to reproduce consistently, so I've not taken it into the dealer.

I too have this problem with the popping noise, its either from the engine, transmission, and sometimes its sounds as if it originating on one side of the engine or the other. I too get the run around from the dealer. They say they cant reproduce it when test driving while having the car serviced ... However in their defense it can be elusive, I took a mechanic out on a ride along and I couldn't repro it. One thing I have noticed its easier to repro after you have been over 45 mph, do a California stop (don't fully stop at stop sign) then give it some steady gas - and Pop! I have had this noted on every service that something is not right and the pop noise is also in conjunction with a performance slip in acceleration, anyone else notice that? It started around 16,000 miles and Im at 33,000 now. . . really close to warranty end gulp! Honda service advisor's have said that since I complained about this so often that even if the car is out of warranty they will fix the transmission if that is the case, but how do we know its transmission, could be whatever mechanism is involved with the cylinder transfer mode from full power, "all 6 cylinders", to the "three" when running optimally. (Green Bar illuminated) Its sad that since the car is not being manufactured anymore I fell they aren't really worried about us. My gear performance is also now not shifting smoothly anymore, it jumps from 3rd to 5th gears and feels like it's down shifting a little too soon when coasting to a stop light. I have also wondered if the pop is electrical??? since i have heard it come from left and right from the engine area, what if its an arc in the Hybrid system. WHO knows??? Obviously we don't ,and neither does Honda.!.

I bought an Hybrid Accord car at a Honda Portland store and have had no issues with it thus far. I think I may be lucky but I've already been driving it for some time.

However, I don't like the idea of having the car depreciate in value so quickly, especially being a honda!!!!!! I really want to see where they got those numbers from.

Ok Here is something weird! I have a 2007 Accord EX-L with the 4cyl and 5 speed. My car makes a muffled popping/backfire type sound that can be heard and felt. It seems to come from under the front passengers feet. Honda can reproduce the problem but has no clue what is wrong. I'm wondering if this is not a hybrid issue but a Accord issue. Any thoughts.

Does anyone know how much a dealer charged to replace the ANC (ballpark figure)? My 2005 Accord Hybrid has the vibration symptoms exactly as desribed in the posts here. The dealer won't give me an estimate until I bring in the car, which is not on warranty. I just want an idea of how much it will cost me to get it fixed. I think Honda should have a recall on their faulty ANC units, though!

I have spoke to my dealer (St. Louis, MO) and to a dealer in New York. Both have told me that the ANC part is on a "National Back Order." I was told all Hybrid parts ship directly from Japan. Either there were insufficient parts in stock or not enough were made. The previous release date was June 19-there is no release date set. Let me know if anyone has been able to locate the part. Hi all, I want to share my experience with my Honda Accord. At first the engine runs normal but as it heats to normal temperature it will start running very rough. So I check some wires, cap and rotor. I even replaced the fuel filter but it did not work. I just solve the problem after I bring it to the mechanic and have my car tune up. The mechanic told me that they have replaced my fuel pump because it is already malfunctioning.

So I guess you try to visit you mechanic and have you car tune up.

Just had this item repaired by the dealer August 2008. Out of warranty but Honda of America provided Good Will Assistance. Issue was a faulty Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) unit referenced in the below link. Total cost to repair $611 - which included the unit and replacement of the two from speakers. Honda covered the parts, I ended up with the labor - $150.

This link has a copy of TSB 06-005.

After being at Honda for over a week with black smoke coming out the tail pipe and bucking in gear, Honda has finally decided that at 75K miles we have a cracked engine head. Since the engine is out of warranty they want to charge me $3,600 to import the part and then charge me labor. Since I own $16k on the car, I have to fix. If we're "lucky", Honda corporate may pick up part of the cost - if they don't pick it all up, that's the last hondaa I'll ever own and I've been a loyal honda driver since the 80's.

In regards to the annoying, loud, humming sound: The accord hybrid can deactivate 3 of the 6 cylinders for optimum efficiency. This causes a loud, base, "thumping" sound. The car's stereo is fitted with a noise cancellation device with a microphone in the overhead light fixture. It works like Bose Noise-Cancelling Headphones. The stereo (whether on or off) sends out an opposite sound wave to cancell out the engine noise. Some of the cars developed problems with the microphone, so you could hear the out-of-phase thumping sound out of the speakers. It is a known, easy fix at the dealership. I have heard the noise in my car two or three times, but not enough to bother getting it looked at. From what I've heard, they treat it like a recall.

Regardless of the other posts here, I think this car has the best combination of power and efficiency out there! 255 HP, and I can get 42 mpg on the highway if I drive it like grandma. (that's driveway to driveway, Boston to Maine.) On the HW, with cruise set at 70, I usually get 35 - 37 mpg depending on the roads. That's the beauty of cylinder deactivation!

i test drove a 05 honda hybrid today here in PA were the weather is cold and snow. it drove nicely and is a fully loaded car with nice added features and a lot of other good things that i'll now not focus on since i've read this blog. What i have noticed as far as noise goes is the slight pop or click when i excelerate that i almost missed until the sales person brought it to my attention. she explained that "hybrids basically cut off when you stop and when you excelarte the the battery (hybrid) starts the car up again" that this is the gas saving feature (smart car). that the subtle click/pop you hear from the car starting again. she also explained that this is a car made for city driving (start & stops) not for long commutes. i was wonder why the price was so cheap for an 05 $12K. i didn't buy it because i had an appt to look at another vehichle but i was definitely going back. hummm!

Greg

I to have a 2005 Honda Hybrid with the noise issue. The first time I took it in, the dealer said it was the speakers and replaced them. I haven't returned. Like other folks have noted, my vibration starts around 40 mph and will continue until 65 mph. It's worse in the hot months and you can tap the accelerator to get it to stop momentarily. It appears to be a vibration set up by harmonics in the drive train....meaning once the drive train vibration starts it tends to vibrate other components in the car. The interior noise in the car in much higher than it used to be. Maybe it is a noise cancellation issue. If anybody has a fix, please let me know.

Hi,
We are a group of students from Imperial College in London and as part of our MSc in Environmental Technology, we are studying the comparative influence of several groups of parameters on car-buyers' behaviour. We would be very pleased to collect answers from car owners and especially hybrid cars owners in order to draw relevant conclusions from our statistical analysis.
By filling in this survey, you will enable us to collect valuable data for our research. Of course all these data will remain strictly confidential and anonymous, and will not be diffused to anyone outside the academic staff at Imperial College.
here is the link to our questionnaire, it should not take you more than 4-5 minutes to fill it in:

Try getting a 2010 Ford Fusion Hyrbid... They were rated the best hybrid car by USA Today a few weeks ago. They said that you can't tell at all when it shifts from gas to electric and its supposed to get way better gas mileage than the Accord did too. Thats what I'm doing!!! :) And I went into a dealership and they said that if I go ahead and order one before March is over then I qualify for the full federal tax credit too! Has anyone experienced a chirping sound from the front passenger side of the car? I have had the Honda Accord Hybrid since 2005 and have 86K miles on it. I purchased the extended warranty as I was concerned that the battery would have problems once I got out of the standard warranty. No problem there, and it has been a reliable car, but the chirping (sounds like a cricket) is driving me nuts. I have found some belt slipping problems on the web related to the 1997 Accord that is described as a chirping sound, but was wondering if this is unique to my car or if anyone else has heard this. It happens typically between 35 and 45 MPH.

I have a 2006 Accord Hybrid that was a dream car the first year. No problems.
Last winter my mileage started to drop both local and highway from 28-34 to 24-28. They did a computer upgrade and things were fine again. Then the auto-stop quit working when I first started up the car and would take a few minutes to kick in. The dealer said it was because of the cold. The temp range is 10-100 degrees. I said OK. But this summer both problems reoccurred. I've had it in several times with nothing found. On my last vist (armed with actual mileage) they had it three days and say they can find nothing wrong. They say it's working within the cars parameters.
Anyone else having mileage or auto-stop issues?

Carol

I have a 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid. I too have the droning sound in the summer months only and it cost too much to fix and now that it is cold that problem is on hold as the cold caused my IMA light to come on and the electric part of the hybrid no longer works!

Any suggestions? I want to trade this car in and when the salesman asks me I can say no problems that are unusual!

I live in Vermont so yes it gets quite cold up here.

Anyone else experiencing the IMA check engine light? Is there a fix and how much will that set me back?

Thanks

AIDA,
Haven't heard of the brakes issue. You could try a local independent mechanic, but may ultimately end up at the dealer. (p.s. I changed your post so it was not ALL IN CAPS. People may misconstrue it as yelling.)

SSquire,
Your vehicle is probably still under warranty for the IMA.

2005 Accord Hybrid

Rick07,
Make sure you don't have the front defroster on. When it's on, the car will usually not shut off at stops. I think the defroster uses the "full power" air conditioning setting to dehumidify the cabin air. When that's in use, the engine stays on. I also get less "green bars" of regenerative braking when using the defogger.

In the winter, my in-city mileage drops, especially for short trips, usually into the low-mid 20's. Until the car warms up, it's just a V-6... once warm, and for longer trips, back into the mid-30's.

2005 Accord Hybrid

My IMA light came on last year. It was covered under the longer Hybrid standard warranty. I forget what the time frames are, but all parts of the car directly associated with the Hybrid system (batteries, IMA, etc...) are covered for a longer period of time than the rest of the car and power train. They either updates the firmware or replaced a computer part, I forget which, but was completely covered under warranty.

Other than that fix, and the annoying droning sound in the summer, (doesn't bother me enough to get the microphone replaced), I've had no issues with the car. Runs great, excellent mileage, goes like a bat out of hell.

The experiment of using hybrid technology to boost performance, rather than improve fuel efficiency, backfired in the marketplace. Case in point: the Honda Accord Hybrid.I have a 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid. I too have the droning sound in the summer months only and it cost too much to fix and now that it is cold that problem is on hold as the cold caused my IMA light to come on and the electric part of the hybrid no longer works!

HI I have the same humming sound...and I think it comes from something not in place either in the hood of the interior of the car or in the trunk. If you bang hard enough on the mid cousol where you keep the change you will hear it vibrate the thru out the entire car.

Can you send me that bulletin...I have brought to my dealer and they claim they hear nothing...

Thanks,

Hey Guys, I notice that a lot of you people have this problem too. It actually not the engine, but the stereo system. It must have something to do with noise cancellation system.

This usually happen after a long drive, the stereo for some reason produce this noise that sort of sound like the engine but it actually not the engine.

A computer upgrade solve the issue, with no cost to you.

I have a 2005 Acccord Hybrid that has had the same problem. In my car, the problem was from engine mount that had torn. I had one replaced when I had my timing belt replaced, which helped reduce the noise, but I've not sprung for having the other one replaced.

Mar 2010 I bought a like new 07 NAVI HAH with 2,800 mi. I experienced the drone sound on the eight hour drive home after picking up the auto. I learned about the SB from this forum and lucky for me Honda will fix the ANC under warranty which runs out in April 2010. I'm thrilled with the driving experience. The HAH is more refined in the little details vs a equivalent V-6 non hybrid. It looks better (side mirror lights/taillights) and rides better with 16 inch tires and 200 extra pounds. It's quieter due to the battery compartment serving as a sound barrier. I'm getting 34mpg on the NAVI readout without the engine being broke in. You can make the case for this car not because its a hybrid but because of the features, VCM, autostop, electric power steering and other non electric motor tricks to improve FE. With the depreciated prices the HAH is a value when you consider its FE and refinement.

Hello,

I bought my 03 civic hybrid in 04. Haven't had to many problems with it until this last March. The IMA light came on so the battery was changed out. I live in Washington State. We drove the car to Texas and back after we had the battery changed. The only thing that happened on the trip was the IMA light came on. We twisted the gas cap and it went off, but also noticed the bars for the big battery was low. We made it home and it seemed to run fine until this last Thursday, May 20, 2010. I went to get in my car to go home and it was acting strange. When I put into drive and started to drive it was hard to stear. So I drove it around the parking lot. It was like the power steering wasn't working. I wanted to get it home and the power steering had kicked in so I went to drive it home. Didn't make it. I maybe got about five miles away and it stalled. I couldn't even get it into neurtral to get it off the road. I managed to get a jump and did get the car home. Next day went to take it to the dealer and it would not start. Had it jumped again and got it to the dealer. They ran the computer check and said there was nothing wrong with it. I must have left the lights on. OK. Saturday went to get in the car and it would not start. Husband took the battery out and took to Auto Zone to have it checked. The battery is so dead the can't check to see if it is good. They finally get it charged enough to check and they say the battery is good and charge it. I drove the car Saturday. Seems to be fine. Sunday car won't start. Call South Tacoma Honda Monday. They tell me to bring the car over and leave it overnight. They just called to tell me I need a new battery a regular battery. I will play the game just because I want to harrass them. After reading these posts I am not sure they know how to fix them after a new IMA battery goes in. I am starting to think that you need to get a new car before the IMA goes out. I would not buy another hybrid!!!!!!!!!! If you have one get another car before the battery goes out!!!!!!

2005 Hybrid Accord. 90,000 miles on it. Other than the noise cancellation issue that was quickly fixed by finding the problem and solution on internet, simply printed a copy and took the notice & the car to the Honda dealership. I also had the engine light/rough running issue and
found out either I needed to twist the gas cap 3 times after it first clicked or if that did not work, replace my gas cap. Twisting extra 3 twists to assure it seals has worked ever since.

I would buy another Hybrid Accord if Honda still made one. Great pick-up, gets great mileage on the open highway even at 85 MPH or in the mountains.

Good mileage in town. Comfortable car. This is my first Honda and I am amazed. My extended warranty is running out in 10000 miles and no one seems to know when the "hybrid" battery will require replacement so I went out looking at other Hybrid options today. When I came back, I checked on internet for issues some of these have. Wow. Maybe this battery will last another 90,000 miles.

It's lonely being the owner of the Accord Hybrid. Anyway, problem was solved when I had the car towed back to the dealer and THEY couldn't start it, so they actually went to work and found the connection from the battery to the starter was loose in some way. I'm doubtfult, but I haven't had any problems since - but then it hasn't been below 10 fahrenheit since either.

I bought a 2005 Accord Hybrid last year and have had the droning noise that many have commented on. The problem seems to be getting worse, maybe because of the hot weather as others have noticed? I took the car to the dealer today and told them about the TSB. They just called to say that is not the problem, but it is a problem with the tires. I don't think so - it happens at around 2000 RPM, when the battery is charging and when the ECO light turns on, and I can sometimes but not always get it to step temporarily by taking my foot off the accelerator. I'm taking it for a test drive with the mechanic tomorrow morning. How do I convince him it is not the tires?

Mark Whitley

I bought a 2005 accord hybrid in may of 2005. About a year ago, or maybe a little longer, I started to notice the rumbling noise. I thought it was the tires I had put on it 2 years ago, as they weren't the same as the original michellins. The noise is very annoying and my family complained so much (i was starting to get used to it) I did research on it and found references to TSB 06-005 which described the problem exactly. I just took the car to the dealer and they quoted $476.34 for parts and labor for the kit. I asked about hondas goodwill program, but was told that since my car is so far out of warranty its unlikely they will help with the cost.
Anyone else have any experiences with this issue when their car was out of warranty (mine is 5+ years old, nearly 50k miles)

al Roach

I Also had this rumbling sound in my 2005 Honda Hybrid. I changed out my weak 5 year old battery and this issue and a few others went away. The battery powers a lot of electronics in this car; but is not used to normally start the car; that is the job of the high voltage batter. When the battery gets old and week, it can go unnoticed because the large high voltage battery will crank the motor. The only way to know that the battery is week is to have it tested at an auto store.

A car battery is typically designed to last 3 years, if yours is 5 years old change it out and put your car's electronics back into operation.

my 2005 accord hybrid makes the same exact droning noise usually only in warmer weather...car has 98k miles on it im thinking the dealer won't help me...i wish there was a do it yourself on fixing this ANC...also over the winter my IMA light came on and i brought it to my buddy who owns a mechanic shop and he hooked it up the computer and it said that the temperature outside was around 90 degrees when it happened, and that i had negative air flow (apparently when the light comes on the car's system takes a snapshot of the current conditions)...funny thing is though is that it would be impossible for it to be 90 degrees outside because i live in ny and it isnt 90 degrees in february which is when the light came on...wondering if i have bigger problems...any advice???

I had the same exact problem and I guarantee you the noise will come back during warm weather. The problem is that it's a faulty Active Noise Canceling unit located behind the radio/Nav system (if you have one). The part is - 06390-SRD-307 Speaker Kit. It comes with the ANC unit and the speakers. If your car is still under warranty, have Honda do it. It should be covered. My car had 60k on it so I was out of warranty and Honda wanted to charge me over $700 so I did it myself and believe me I'm not that handy so it wasn't really easy but I was able to do it. I bought it at www.majestichonda.com for $262.00 and I bought a Service Manual for my year, make and model on ebay for $25.00 and it basically instructed me to remove most of the center console to be able to slide out the Radio/Nav display. The ANC unit is mounted to the back of that NAV (HVAC) section. I made a 3 part video that I posted on Youtube so that you could see the exact procedure.

After they performed the update my check engine light keeps coming back. First they said it was the computer, they replaced it, 2 weeks later the light came back, then Honda dealership said it was that I needed another computer replacement as it was faulty, 2 weeks later came back on, I took it back they could not find the problem. 3 days later they said the wiring in the harness had been chewed by mice or a squirrel (I have lived in the same house for 24 years and my husband has the same type of car except not a hybrid and mice nor squirrels have chewed on any of our many cars we have had) but anyway we paid the $280 for replacement of the wires - yeap 3 weeks later the check engine light is back - Please help

My 2005 HAH's (71k miles) IMA and check engine light went on this morning but it seemed to drive just fine. I didn't want to drive around with the light on, so I took it to the dealer and they said it was a software update for the battery pack related to service bulletin 07-003. My invoice says "cont code B99" and "fail code 07201" if that means anything. They said it was covered under the factory warranty, not my extended Honda Care warranty (I have 7yr/100k miles). Light is off and car seems to running fine. Hope I don't have another problem anytime soon.

I also took my HAH to the dealer in Jan 2009 for the check engine light and they told me it was service bulletin 07-016 and they recalibrated PGM-FI wtih HDS (whatever that means). They told me that one was not covered by either factory or extended warranty, but I complained to Honda Care (called them while I was at the dealer) and the dealer waived the fee as a "courtesy". They still charged me $29 for the tech to look at it though. Invoice said "cont code 0320" and "fail code 0321".

Good day!

I beg to draw your attention to the mini-power station "MES". In my
opinion, it is able to cause a sensation in the field of alternative
sources of clean electric energy. In the process the station "MES"
does not depend on natural phenomena, does not require hydrocarbon fuel and produces no harmful emissions. More detailed information can be obtained from the website: http://mes50Hz.ru.

She had a 2002 Mercedes E320 before and this Honda is more fuel efficient, has a better navigation system, handles better and has a more powerful engine. I have the same humming noise on my 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid and the dealership told me it's the ANC issue and not an engine problem. The noise tend to go away when I accelerate and I'll rather deal with a temporary noise than spend $800 on noise cancellation on 112K mile car.

I own a 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid and mine now has about 80K on it. Right after I bought it used in March 2008, about 37K on it, I started hearing the loud humming or "harmonic drone" as it is sometimes referred to. Mine seemed to regularly appear at about 1500 rpm. I pulled the service bulletin and drove to the dealer. I personally think this should be a recall item, but I don't believe it is unless something has changed since 2008.

The dealer replaced the ANC (Active Noice Cancellation) and I was out about $50, which seemed pretty reasonable. I absolutely love this car and it has been very reliable other than the ANC. Good luck to you who are having this problem.

I took it to independent reputable Honda mechanic and he told me to take it to dealer. Dealer says $5-6k for tranny and $4-6k for "other engine troubles" they can't diagnose or guarantee, but they would try to pinpoint with "more diagnostic" testing for $450. Then basically told me to walk away. I'm confused since I've never had any major issues with this car and the service at dealer can't really tell me with certainty what else is truly wrong with my car. To top it off, I'm on my last stretch of payments on my car loan. Any suggestions or HAH mechanics in San Francisco area please let me know. I'd rather pay someone who knows about these cars $450 to give me true diagnostic results without charging more because they can't figure it out.

Thank you.

I also have 2005 Accord Hybrid with humming vibration noise between 50-55mph and now starting 25-35mph. Printed out the
noise cancellation bulletin took it to my dealer and they claim my
vehicle needs the transmission burnished to stop the sound. Anyone ever hear the same? I have less then 50,000 miles hate to think transmission is going.

Great job ppl. All your posts on the ANC have been really helpful and probably have saved me 100s of $$$ in labour costs. Once I get the part I will change it in the driveway instead of paying my local mechanic.

Special thanks to Paul for making that video!

Here is a new one for you...

I noticed someone posted about misfires on cell 3. I too had the same problem except I had multiple misfires. Cell 2 turned out to be the problem. My rocker arm jammed in the upright position which also bent the bar. For you non-technical ppl out there (such as myself) this meant opening up the motor. My HBH has over 170k on it already for forget about any warranty.

I got the car back last week but now I have this horrible knocking sound that happens whenever the assist kicks in (blue lines). The noise is especially loud when i am in the 1500rpm range at lower residential zone driving speeds.

I dont have any warning lights on....

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I looked at the service bulletin for the ANC issue. There is a simple test that anyone can do to determine if the ANC is faulty. I can't say that I understand how it works but it involves clipping a wire to the dome light (remove bulb)and when the humming starts touch the other end of the wire to the top of your cigarette lighter. The service bulletin shows pictures of how to do it.

I tried it tonight and much to my surprise the sound stopped the moment I touched the cigarette lighter. Go figure :s

Ive had the same issue as you with the rocker arms on the rear head exceptt mine was on #3. It cost me just short $1600 to fix. The car has had an intermittent backfire sound for a while, even before the rocker arm problem...Ive had it to the dealer several times but no one seems to be able to isolate the cause. Ive read other posts with this problem but no solutions. Its frustrating to say the least.

I feel you're pain Dave.

A Honda mechanic suggested that I have the Vtec pressure switch checked. I have been putting up with the knocking for over 4 weeks now. My mechanic is going to check again this weekend.

I was able to duplicate the sound for my mechanic last week after we elevated the front of the car and accelerated (traction control off). My guy actually used the term "backfire" when he listened. He thought that it was like it was backfiring back through the air intake.

If I get this figured out I will be sure to let you know what to shoot for.

Did you purchase it? I bought my 2006 HAH new; last model year (although I didn't know it at the time). I like the car, more than most that I've owned. Fuel efficiency isn't as good as I would like in a car, but I can't justify replacing this one yet. No overwhelming problems. Maintenance expense is just under par with most other vehicles I own now or have owned.

Keep in mind that when reading these posts that they are self-selected. Most people only post when there are intractable problems and they're angry.

Just replaced the IMA batteries on my 2005 HAH. My warranty states that it only covers 8yrs./80,000 miles, I am at 94,000 miles. So, $3700.00 later. Did or do I have any chose but to replace the IMA batteries.

Doug

If the IMA batteries fail the car simply reverts to a regular V6 accord with 3 cylinders cruising feature similar to currently selling accords.

My 2005 hybrid accord is driving the wife and I crazy. The local dealer says they can't replicate the problem. They must be deaf as the drone seems to be getting worse. I was wondering if you still have the service bulletin and if so, could you e-mail me a copy so I can show these knuckleheads? Thanks in advance, -Chris

Regarding drone noise in hybrids. When the engine switches to 3 cyls. The exhaust becomes detuned, the Automatic Noise Control is to noise blank that noise through the front door speakers. The computer has a tentency to turn the ANC off and you hear the rumble. This can be checked and turned back on.
1. Acoords with Nav. Systems. Turn the ignition switch to ON or ACC
2. Turn the radio off by pushing left VOL/PWR knob.
3. While holding down the upper half of both the CH/DISK and SEEK/SKIP buttons simultaneously, now press VOL/Pwr radio knob. This will place the unit into DIAG diagnostic mode. DIAG will appear in the message window.
4. Now while the engine is stopped and in the DIAG mode, turn the ANC ON and OFF a couple times by pressing the SCAN button. In the ON position a low 50 cycle hum should be audible. While this low hum can be heard, start your engine the hum sound should go away. If it does not there is a possibility the ANC is defective. If it does the ANC was probably just turned off. Now drive your car and enjoy the quiet, It's wonderful.

Thanks Dick2005 for your post. I dont have a NAV system in my car but gave it a try anyhow. All it did was turn the screen off. Not a bad trick regardless. Many nights I have been driving and wished I could black out the radio screen. Now I can.

The Service Bullitin is valid for the USA only. Honda Canada does not recognize that there is an issue. (insert choice words here).

If you do cough up the $500+ for a replacement ANC unit be sure to view Pauls video. He did a great job at explaining how to do it in your driveway. His link is posted somewhere above.

I guess nobody else is having the knocking at 1500RPM's when the ECO is activated (in the blue zone)? If you do (or did) let me know if you are able to fix it. My mechanic is still stumped.

I have a 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid and I have experienced the humming noise for years and when it starts I give the gas pedal a quick tap to increase the RPMs and that usually turns it off, at least for ten seconds or so. I appreciate seeing the instructions about turning the noise cancellation on; I'll try that. I also have been getting a squeeling sound during the summer when it gets hot and it usually happens when I'm turning the steering wheel, although it didn't happen this summer. Several years back I took it into the dealer about these problems and they told me they could not duplicate the humming or the squeeling and that Honda had not issued anything about such problems even though I saw other Accord Hybrid owners complaining about it on the internet. I think Honda just wants to sweep the problem under the rug rather than fix it.

Recently my Accord Hybrid began running very sluggish, like it's got half the power. The engine light blinks when this is happening. I took it into an independent repair shop and the mechanic drives an Acura so he's very familiar with Honda. He did a computer diagnostic and said my car was firing on three of the six cylinders and its ignition coil and/or spark plug related. This will cost between $300 - $600 to repair. He said ignition coils going bad on a Honda is very rare. Just my luck.

I have a 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid that I purchased from a private party 2 years ago. The car ran fine the first year then the check engine light, IMA light, and one other light keep coming on. I have taken it in for diagnoses at our Honda Dealer only to be told there is nothing wrong with the car and they reset the lights.

The lights came on again so my husband and I decided to trade it in on another car. We went to the Non-Honda dealer in town and they wont even take the car as a trade in. So we went to the Honda Dealer and it is undergoing complete scruitiny and they are talking about not taking the car or only giving us 2K trade in value on a 14K car!!!!

I am so frusterated since they are the boneheads telling me there is nothing wrong with the car, yet they wont take it??? I am not sure what else I can do to get out from under this car with out totally losing the money invested into it.

I have accord05, hybrid since two years with no major problems, nowadays I started hearing some noise when I switch the ignition on the morning the noise is clearly heard if the weather is colder, however this noise completely disappear whenever I start the ignition on the car on the daytime where the engine is relatively warm. the last maintenance I made before two months I replaced the engine oil, and the technician load my car with 5Litter oil instead of 4.3 Litter which is the standard volume recommended by HONDA, I don’t know if this affect on the engine or not.

Your kind assistance is highly appreciated

following up on what "Dick2005" i have the procedure but for the non NAV/GPS version of the '05 accord hybrid.

"if you do not have the NAV unit follow this procedure.
1. Turn the ignition switch to ACC (1) or ON (11)
2. Turn the audio unit ON.
3. While holding down both the "Preset1" and "Preset6" buttons simultaneously, press the AUDIO PWR knob.
4. "DIAG" will appear on the audio unit display to indicate you have entered the self-diagnostic mode.

NOW, while in Diag mode turn the ANC ON to OFF by pressing the #1 button, A LOW
frequency hum (50HZ) should sound for up to a minute. While this low frequency HUM is Sounding turn the engine on and the HUM should GO AWAY. Now drive your car and see if the low frequency drone has gone away! "

I have tested it and loved it :D i hope all of you find this useful!

My apologies in advance for any hardcores or passionate mechanics out there, but I have a pretty bush-league fix for the ANC issue, and it's FREE. I was waiting to see if there were any adverse effects (I did this on my 2005 HAH about 9 months ago when the droning noise ramped up in the warmer Spring weather once again). I've put about 20,000 miles on it since, and nothing is different - except for an absence of the noise.

Basically, all you do is unplug the ANC unit that is on the back of the stereo. There is a great YouTube video series (search 2005 HONDA_ ACCORD_ HYBRID ANC_replacement_Part01, then part 2 and 3) on how to remove the radio and access the ANC unit. If you want to order the part yourself (at a cost of around $3-00ish?) you can complete the project, but if you just want the blessed noise to go away, just unplug the unit.

Cheers!
Moose

I just bought this 05' HAH @ 79k miles and been driving around with this annoying humming/drone noise as mentioned by most people. This occurs when the hybrid system (assist) kicks on and off and noise more present when on low acceleration. Thanks to MOOSE he found a cheap/inexpensive fix to this annoying noise. I disconnected the ANC unit behind the stereo unit. Took it for a drive and sure enough the noise is gone :) The front speakers work fine has no affect whatsoever. Thanks again moose.

THe funny thing is, they will give you 2,000 for the trade, do basically a few cosmetic things to it, then turn around and sell it for 12 grand...Its how car dealers make money(selling used cars)
My sister turned in her CRV, they gave her 10 grand for it, then it was on the lot within a day for 16,999...
These dealers are in the "business" to make money...
We traded in a 2003 dodge neon with a bad tranny on our 08 accord..and They gave us 1950$...a day later, its was front & center in the used car lot for 4,999....
