Honda Accord Hybrid Engine Problems

Created August 18, 2005, at 10:58 am by Anonymous

Is anyone having repeat problems with their engine light coming on and the engine running rough? I purchased and Accord Hybid in April and my car has already been flat bedded back to the dealership twice. I start it up only to have the engine light and battery light come on and the engine sound as if it is not running on all cylinders. The first time I was told it was a sensor and I'm still waiting for and answer after two days of being without my car. I am very diappointed in the cars reliability. Please let me know if anyone else is having a similar problem.

After 5 days and several phone calls I finely have a response from my local dealership. They had been waiting to hear from the Honda engineers and while they still are not sure what is wrong with my car they are going to replace the computer that interfaces with the electrical components of the car. The dealership believes that I will have my car back some time late Monday. This is the second time I have been without my car for over a week. I will not be recommending this car to anyone. Although I believe in the technology I don't believe that the local dealership knows enough about these vehicles.

For those of you who are contemplating buying Honda Hybrids.... here's my story. I leased a 2005 model Accord hybrid, and have been having problems ever since. The first months were fine, and then the humming noise started, as the weather got warmer. The dealership has no clue, and even after duplicating the annoying drone, they have the nerve to tell me thast it is normal. I wonder whether the Honda Engineers designed this piece of trash to be a torture chamber, as that is just what it is. I have read some forums since, and there are temp fixes, but Honda has still not come out with a bulletin or a recall. My first experience with Honda obviously sucks. Stay the hell away from Honda hybrids

I'm think I'm having the same problem as Daya with my 2005 hybrid Accord. Tune your stero to a quiet spot and turn the bass up as loud as it can go and it will sound just like the engine of my hybrid Accord. It's impossible to drive for long with that vibrating engine noise, it's that bad. The dealer is just playing games at this point. I took one of the techs for a drive and we both heard the sound clearly. He couldn't pinpoint what it was and said he'd never heard anything like it. Now, he says he can't reproduce the sound. I can't understand why that matters, as he couldn't figure it out by the sound the the first time. I just want it fixed. If anyone has any ideas, please post.

I have the same problem. I also have recieved a service Bulletin from the Honda Dealer on this. I will send anyone a copy if they email me. Its not a safety issue but a Noise Cacelation issue.

I have had the same problem with the noise. It's so bad my son hates riding in the car - it bothers his ears with the vibration. If you hit the gas pedal, it tends to stop but it can be constant. My Honda dealership said the engineers are "working on it" and that I'm not the only one but from a consumer who doesn't buy new cars every three years (last purchase 1997), I'd like to dump this car - loss or not.

My 05 has a rough idle and the engine light sometimes flashes at full throttle. The repair shop is a second home to it.

I've filed an official complaint with American Honda so they can track problems with my car. The next step might be to lemon law it. I can't be bringing the car in every month and I sure can sell it with the engine malfunctioning.

I'm sorry but you have realize that with thousands
of Honda Hybrids being sold every month that there
has to be some that have parts that are faulty.
I had an idea for hybrid buses 26 yrs ago and a
few yrs. ago spoke over nationwide radio on the
environmental benefits of having all hybrid vehicles.
I drove the very first Honda SU2000 that came into
the country in May 1999 while the other 5 that were
made stayed in Japan waiting for the test results.
I bought one of the original Honda Accord Hybrids
made last year in March. It was quite incredible.
Completely quiet and faster than anything imaginable. The take off isn't all that impressive about like a RX-8 or Porsche 924 But the top speed
and fuel economy blow away any high preformance car made. I suspect the dealers in the U.S. need to have some of the Japanese designers come here to
consult these questions. I think the fuel module can cause significant problems with running if its going faulty and the synergy system may not be grounded properly causing the noise. Good luck, If your car isn't flawless you need to take it back, I spent 40K on mine (36.8 + 3K on getting the 1st one which I suppose they meticulously tested)The GPS works better than any other one I've used.

"But the top speed and fuel economy blow away any high preformance car made"
Dude, you seriously need a Tesla (www.teslamotors.com). 0-60mph in ~4sec AND over 100 (effective well-to-wheels) mpg.

It's not an engine problem, it's due to a faulty ANC (active noise cancellation) unit. Tell your dealership to look up S/B 06-005.

In respons to Mic - it might be the fact that we spent a lot of money on a car only to have engine lights, towing, vibration noises, etc. drown out the beauty of a hybrid. On edmunds I found a site that lists the problem with the droning and there is a fix that supposedly is out there. However, when I brought all the documentation in to the dealer, they could only "put it on the service managers desk and he'll call". Like when? Today? Tomorrow? I got more frustrated and decided NOT to take it out on the woman with the feeble reply. I can't decide if I'm more frustrated with a car that is beautiful outside but definitely needs work inside, the dealership who's jacking me around knowing they'll have to fix it but not wanting to put out the $$ yet or Honda....

I have a 2005 Accord Hybrid that just came out of the shop. The check engine light and oil light illuminated and the car shook at the front end when making a sharp or U-turn (this happened three times in a 24-hour period... the temp fix was to turn the engine off, restart, and the car would operate normally). It was a faulty oil pressure sensor (regulator?). The dealer replaced it under warranty, but had the nerve to suggest that I take it home and drive it for 4 days until the part shipped! Of course, i refused and got a rental vehicle instead. Good luck to all with problems. I haven't noticed the noise cancellation problem, but I do hear an occassional rythmic tone from beneath the hood that is only audible when outside of the vehicle.

After a year of problems with my accord hybrid (engine problems and vibration noise when traveling 45-55 mph) I opted to trade the car in. I believe in the hybrid technology, but I had to cut my losses and get rid of the car. It was in the shop 4 times in less than a year and left me standed twice. I live in an area with limited public transprotation and I needed a reliable vehicle. My neighbor has the same car and has no problems with it. I hope to try a hybid vehicle again in a few years.

I have a 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid. I upgraded from the Honda Civic Hybrid, which I loved. The Accord is comfortable and handles well, but I've had the problem with the vibration roaring noise as well. I've had no other problems with the car. The dealership told me the noise is normal, but still did several software upgrades and replaced a sensor in the IMA. I don't hear the noise much anymore, but I don't know if that's because it's cooling down now (autumn) or that the problem has been fixed.
I still plan to call the dealership about the part listed to see if they replaced it.

We just bought a new Honda Accord Hybrid 2006, we are not getting the vibration/droning noise but we are getting a terrible popping, almost like a backfire when we accelerate the car after we have stopped at a light or turned the corner. The dealership tells us this is normal. It is so annoying, the car has been in the shop more than we have been able to drive it. Has anyone had this problem?

Alex says:

I purchased my Accord Hybrid 2006 in Ferbruary. I have not experienced any of the problems mentioned. Tell your dealer the popping noise is not normal.

My wife's 2006 Honda Accord is making the same popping noise as one accelerates from a stop or into a turn. She loves the car, but that noise is very disturbing. We took it to the shop/dealer on 3/20, they duplicated the problem, but have no clue what is causing it. They said they needed to get another Accord Hybrid in to compare ours with it to see if they can diagnose the problem. Their lame excuse is that it possibly could be the characteristic of an Accord hybrid - if that's the case, we will be unloading it, and maybe not for another Honda! We also found out that the black book price on this car depreciated it 30% in just one year - buyer beware!

replacing the ANC unit fixed all the vibration\humming problems.
Thank you to whoever posted that.
The dealership had no idea, but I told them to look up the service buleting as you pointed.

My 2006 HAH has similar symptoms. During light acceleration at approximately 20mph and 1800rpm, there is a pop / clunk that occurs. It may be also correlated to the IMA assist momentarily kicking in or out. Sadly, the noise is difficult to reproduce consistently, so I've not taken it into the dealer.

I too have this problem with the popping noise, its either from the engine, transmission, and sometimes its sounds as if it originating on one side of the engine or the other. I too get the run around from the dealer. They say they cant reproduce it when test driving while having the car serviced ... However in their defense it can be elusive, I took a mechanic out on a ride along and I couldn't repro it. One thing I have noticed its easier to repro after you have been over 45 mph, do a California stop (don't fully stop at stop sign) then give it some steady gas - and Pop! I have had this noted on every service that something is not right and the pop noise is also in conjunction with a performance slip in acceleration, anyone else notice that? It started around 16,000 miles and Im at 33,000 now. . . really close to warranty end gulp! Honda service advisor's have said that since I complained about this so often that even if the car is out of warranty they will fix the transmission if that is the case, but how do we know its transmission, could be whatever mechanism is involved with the cylinder transfer mode from full power, "all 6 cylinders", to the "three" when running optimally. (Green Bar illuminated) Its sad that since the car is not being manufactured anymore I fell they aren't really worried about us. My gear performance is also now not shifting smoothly anymore, it jumps from 3rd to 5th gears and feels like it's down shifting a little too soon when coasting to a stop light. I have also wondered if the pop is electrical??? since i have heard it come from left and right from the engine area, what if its an arc in the Hybrid system. WHO knows??? Obviously we don't ,and neither does Honda.!.

I bought an Hybrid Accord car at a Honda Portland store and have had no issues with it thus far. I think I may be lucky but I've already been driving it for some time.

However, I don't like the idea of having the car depreciate in value so quickly, especially being a honda!!!!!! I really want to see where they got those numbers from.

I bet your Chevelle gets about 11 miles to the gallon too... Way to destroy the planet cause you like to drive fast and hear your big engine rumble... Could you be compensating for a lack of something else maybe?

BartDeath says:

anyway. . . back to the Topic. . . I have discovered that the pop which I believe is a misfire - I heard this was occurring and was fixed on 2005 Accord hybrids... I will l in my 2006 Accord Hybrid occurs when the IMA motor shuts off just after a slight battery assist. SO heres one example... Lets say I come to a stop sign but kinda roll a bit instead of coming to a complete stop. Then accelerate again, which kicks in a little battery assist. When thw IMA motor switches off - 50% of the time I will get a pop and subtle performance slip. Of course when I need to gun the engine for need for speed, i.e to get out of the way of someone's lousy driving skills, this does not occur. Its only during subtle driving around town.

Ok Here is something weird! I have a 2007 Accord EX-L with the 4cyl and 5 speed. My car makes a muffled popping/backfire type sound that can be heard and felt. It seems to come from under the front passengers feet. Honda can reproduce the problem but has no clue what is wrong. I'm wondering if this is not a hybrid issue but a Accord issue. Any thoughts.

Does anyone know how much a dealer charged to replace the ANC (ballpark figure)? My 2005 Accord Hybrid has the vibration symptoms exactly as desribed in the posts here. The dealer won't give me an estimate until I bring in the car, which is not on warranty. I just want an idea of how much it will cost me to get it fixed. I think Honda should have a recall on their faulty ANC units, though!

Either there were insufficient parts in stock or not enough were made. The previous release date was June 19-there is no release date set. Let me know if anyone has been able to locate the part. Hi all, I want to share my experience with my Honda Accord. At first the engine runs normal but as it heats to normal temperature it will start running very rough. So I check some wires, cap and rotor. I even replaced the fuel filter but it did not work. I just solve the problem after I bring it to the mechanic and have my car tune up. The mechanic told me that they have replaced my fuel pump because it is already malfunctioning.

So I guess you try to visit you mechanic and have you car tune up.

Just had this item repaired by the dealer August 2008. Out of warranty but Honda of America provided Good Will Assistance. Issue was a faulty Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) unit referenced in the below link. Total cost to repair $611 - which included the unit and replacement of the two from speakers. Honda covered the parts, I ended up with the labor - $150.

This link has a copy of TSB 06-005.

After being at Honda for over a week with black smoke coming out the tail pipe and bucking in gear, Honda has finally decided that at 75K miles we have a cracked engine head. Since the engine is out of warranty they want to charge me $3,600 to import the part and then charge me labor. Since I own $16k on the car, I have to fix. If we're "lucky", Honda corporate may pick up part of the cost - if they don't pick it all up, that's the last hondaa I'll ever own and I've been a loyal honda driver since the 80's.

In regards to the annoying, loud, humming sound: The accord hybrid can deactivate 3 of the 6 cylinders for optimum efficiency. This causes a loud, base, "thumping" sound. The car's stereo is fitted with a noise cancellation device with a microphone in the overhead light fixture. It works like Bose Noise-Cancelling Headphones. The stereo (whether on or off) sends out an opposite sound wave to cancell out the engine noise. Some of the cars developed problems with the microphone, so you could hear the out-of-phase thumping sound out of the speakers. It is a known, easy fix at the dealership. I have heard the noise in my car two or three times, but not enough to bother getting it looked at. From what I've heard, they treat it like a recall.

Regardless of the other posts here, I think this car has the best combination of power and efficiency out there! 255 HP, and I can get 42 mpg on the highway if I drive it like grandma. (that's driveway to driveway, Boston to Maine.) On the HW, with cruise set at 70, I usually get 35 - 37 mpg depending on the roads. That's the beauty of cylinder deactivation!

What i have noticed as far as noise goes is the slight pop or click when i excelerate that i almost missed until the sales person brought it to my attention. she explained that "hybrids basically cut off when you stop and when you excelarte the the battery (hybrid) starts the car up again" that this is the gas saving feature (smart car). that the subtle click/pop you hear from the car starting again. she also explained that this is a car made for city driving (start & stops) not for long commutes. i was wonder why the price was so cheap for an 05 $12K. i didn't buy it because i had an appt to look at another vehichle but i was definitely going back. hummm!

I to have a 2005 Honda Hybrid with the noise issue. The first time I took it in, the dealer said it was the speakers and replaced them. I haven't returned. Like other folks have noted, my vibration starts around 40 mph and will continue until 65 mph. It's worse in the hot months and you can tap the accelerator to get it to stop momentarily. It appears to be a vibration set up by harmonics in the drive train....meaning once the drive train vibration starts it tends to vibrate other components in the car. The interior noise in the car in much higher than it used to be. Maybe it is a noise cancellation issue. If anybody has a fix, please let me know.

Has anyone experienced a chirping sound from the front passenger side of the car? I have had the Honda Accord Hybrid since 2005 and have 86K miles on it. I purchased the extended warranty as I was concerned that the battery would have problems once I got out of the standard warranty. No problem there, and it has been a reliable car, but the chirping (sounds like a cricket) is driving me nuts. I have found some belt slipping problems on the web related to the 1997 Accord that is described as a chirping sound, but was wondering if this is unique to my car or if anyone else has heard this.
