HID Headlight replacement

Created October 29, 2005, at 8:31 am by Anonymous

What is the expected lamp life for the HID bulb on the Prius. I was shocked to learn that each bulb costs more than $300. Toyota indicates they are NOT covered under any warranty, although my local dealer said they would replace a lamp if it fails in a three year time period.

HID lights generally last WAY longer than regular halogen bulbs.

Joey

My Prius HID bulb lasted 1 year which is not long considering they cost $300.00. However they are covered under warranty up to 36,000 miles.

I was also informed by a Toyota employee that a bulletin came out about possible HID headlight computer issues.

Something to look into.

I don't know why they are charging over $300 for a lamp that can be bought from an auto parts store for $110 and that would be for a brand like Sylvania. The dealer may install lamps that you supply. I guess the Toyota dealer just may not sell parts that are not Toyota parts but they can install parts you supply. Either the Toyota lamps are crap or their ballast circuit that drives the lamp is incorrectly designed. Using the Sylvania may solve the short life problem if the problem is with the lamp but not if the ballast is the culprit.

My Prius is 2008 with 36700 - just out of warranty. I have only had it a little over a year, I put about 90 miles on it per work day. My passenger headlight keeps going out. It seems that several law firms are looking at class action. I am researching before I go to the dealer.

Toyota HID Headlights Investigation
Wasserman, Comden & Casselman L.L.P. is currently conducting an investigation involving the High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights on certain Prius models. Some consumers complain that the HID headlights on their Prius work intermittently, flicker, or suddenly cease to work entirely. Similar complaints have also been made regarding other Toyota vehicles, such as the Sienna.

Upon taking the vehicle to the dealership for repairs, some consumers are told to replace the bulbs for a significant cost and/or to replace the computer controlling the headlights.

If the HID headlights on your Prius or other model Toyota do not function properly, or if you would like more information about our Toyota HID Headlights investigation, please Contact Us.

stupid question:

For those of you who replaced the HID headlight at OTHER than Toyota (either yourself, or another mechanic)

did replacing the lamp solve the problem? Are the new headlights running reliably?

It occurs to me that HID lamps need a high voltage power supply, and that the "bad lamps" may actually be a bad power supply causing the lamp to fail.

Maybe Toyota knows this, and is charging you for a new high voltage power supply as well as the lamp (without tellng you because lamps are not warrentied?).

Just a thought.

I would have to believe that it is not just the lamp. It just seems like a lot of them are going bad.

Same problem. Passenger side headlight flickers off and won't come back on until I turn off the headlights alltogether. I bought spec'd replacement headlights (pair) from Autozone for $60. I have spent a couple of hours trying to install myself to no avail. I have 45,000 on my Prius (2007). Dealer wants $270 to replace passenger side headlight.

If there is a class action suit, I would like to be involved.
Here ware guess if the problem is the computer, the ballast or the bulb. Why doesn't Toyota simply do a recall and fix it. We could be years chasing this problem at considerable expense. ntimm

This is scary. We don't really know what Toyota is replacing when they charge all this money. Either that or we are over-thinking the problem set. Experience says: could very well be Toyota is sneaking another replacement part into the installation without telling us. I am ripping mad. ntimm

While driving in the rain with my passenger headlight out, yesterday, I saw another Toyota Prius with the passenger headlight out so I thought I'd jump online to see if this was a common problem. Surprisingly, more so than expected. I have not gone to the dealership yet as I know this will be pricey. Any update before I spend the cash I don't have?

Just got back from the dealer with the same problem as others here...both lights go out. Won't come back on until I turn off/on the switch.

The dealer here wants $345 a piece just for the lamps. I didn't even ask want the install price would be.

Anyone have success with replacement bulbs? Any word on a class action?

I'll just keep turning them off/on until...

I have an 2007 Prius bought May 8 2007, It now has 86,000 miles on it. Up until about 2 months ago my car was running fine. Then the head lights started going out. I would turn off the switch and turn it back on and the lights would come back on. The lights have a mind of there own. One will go out and the next time the other will, and a couple of times the boths light have gone out at the same time. Now the tire pressure light has come on and I can't get it to go off. I love my Prius and am driving the wheels off of it. But was doing a little investigating to see if any one else was having this problem, and I 'm glad I did. I have an appointment to get them fixed on the 24th.

I'm trying to install the hid myself to save money, got Phillips online for $70. toyota won't sell the bulbs even to car audio dealers, they want the big bucks for themselves. The Toyota bulb is $75 but the dealer wants $380. Pretty ridiculous mark up I'd say. Probably a little price fixing scam as well. Toyota also trys to say the computer is involved and you can't do it yourself. We'll see.

My Prius is currently at 55,000 and the dealer says one of the headlights is starting to flicker. Estimated cost was around $450 for the bulb and $570 with installation.

I have a 2005 prius that I bought as a with a salvage title. Every thing is great except the Hid light that was installed after the collision keeps going out after 5 minutes of use. I wander if ther is some balast/ driver in there that is faulty? I hate to pay big bucks to get this fixed. any ideas.

2008 Prius with 45,000 miles on it and same issue- the driver's side headlight is on when i start the car and quickly goes of, staying off for the remainder of my drive. the mechanic at the Toyota dealer says that it's overheating and going off as a precaution not to start a fire. finally replaced it at $150 parts, $40 labor here in Cincinnati

Own a 2004 level 6 with 140K, while I really like this car the HID lights are awfull. My wife has complained for years and refuses to drive it, especially anytime near darkness. My question has anyone tried converting the HID head lamps to the halogen lights (or is this not possible)? I'll probably not buy another Prius unless Toyota actually fixes this problem.

After I insisted heavily with the Rockland County Toyota dealership they finally agreed to replace my driver side HID light for free. Today (02-JAN-2010), I am getting a letter from Toyota USA, stating that the claim that the ECU controlling unit needs to be replaced is wrong. The problem can be solved with replacing the HID bulb only, and Toyota states that such should not cost more than USD 150 - if you paid more, and your dealership charged you for an ECU replacement, Toyota USA is going to reimburse you. This is for all 2006 - 2009 Toyota Prius models.
Hope this helps. It's a shame that Toyota and its dealership network played hardball for so long.

I have a 2006 prius, and the passanger bulb kept going out. I could get it on by turning off the car and back on. Toyota fixed the bulb, because the car was only 2 years old and less than 36K miles. Now I have the driver side light winking out. It restarts with the switch off and on recycle.

I see a lot of prius cars in our HOV lanes, with on light out. i think the problem is very prone to the HID optioned prius (came with option 6 for my 2006).

I cant find an aftermarket bulb replacement, Sylvania will not sell to me and Advance auto, cant order it either.

Get me on the list of folks uset with this issue.

Thanks,

I own a 2006 Prius, with approximately 98000 miles and I'm having the same problem with the passenger Head Light - dealer said it had to do with a seal around the bulb that keeps the bulb cool, and if seal is faulty, the bulb will go out to prevent over heating. Recycling the lights helps, but honestly, not the best way to drive in the dark. The fact that the bulbs are so expensive is ridiculous...

I have a 2007 Prius with 25k miles that has HID lights. Yesterday the passenger side headlight went out while driving in on a residential street. I stopped the car, shut the lights off, then on, light came back on. Toyota needs to do a recall on this safety issue. I can't imagine what would happen when both headlights go out on a dark highway at 55 mph.

I finally gave up. Purchased aftermarket headlamps (THE HALOGEN STYLE) and the H4 bulbs. After having the left or the right, or most recently BOTH HID bulbs go out and having to do the on/off trick every 4 or 40 miles (very sporadic) I had enough.

There is a 12 volt plug on the bottom of the HID HL assemblies that I was able to tap, wired to the female plugs that fit the back of the H4's and hooked up the low beams. Headlights go on and stay on, but since the plug is a two wire I only have low-beams... a fair trade off for NO beams!

And if I really wanted to I could wire the fog light switch to power the high beam prong on the H4 bulb, maybe I'll do that tomorrow, but I don't use high beams and with the new clear lens I'm seeing farther and better than I have with HID's when they did work.

Frankly I'm worried people may think I have my high beams on they're so improved!

Total time 1 hour. Total cost around $200
2 Halogen style HL assemblies
2 H4 Halogen Bulbs
4 Wire Taps
4 Female Crimp Plugs
4 Foot 16 gauge wire (cut into four strands 1 ft ea)
2 Rubber Boots (DEALER item)

Of course I'll recoup that expense when I sell the HID assemblies on eBay

I have a 2008. The passenger side went out at 34 months. Dealer said it is between 550 and 1900 depending on if it is just the bulb or the power supply too. I did not want these bulbs but I needed the number 4 package t get the phone blue tooth. I find it frustrating that I paid extra and the stock ones are far more reliable. I own a 2002 and all the bulbs still work. I have a 1998 Tacoma and all the bulbs still work. I see a lot of Pruis cars in my County with one light out. Toyota has lost my loyalty and trust.

I own a 2008 Prius that I bought new. It has 38000 miles on it. The headlamps started going out intermittently a week or so ago. Tried to remove a bulb but the car is built so that the front bumper cover has to be removed to do so. Dealer informed me of the extention to the warranty and I have an appointment to get the bulbs replaced on the 2008 car. If the bulb lasts only this short time I will face replacing them again while I own the car. My wife owns a 2006 Prius, also bought new, and which now has about 75000 miles on it. Same problem has happened with the headlights going out. The dealer said it will cost nearly $400 to replace the bulbs and there is no warranty relief. We are not pleased with Toyota for this reason.

i purchased a new 2006 prius in march of 2006. the HID headlights have failed more than 6 times since i purchased my car. toyota paid for all the replacements except a labor charge in 2009. NOW, AGAIN, the left light has gone out. according to the latest settlement disclosure, my lights are under warranty because they began failing shortly after i bought my car.

it's now been 6 days since i reported the latest problem and nothing from toyota yet. the price of the bulbs has gone down from $300 to $179, but for a disabled veteran living on social security, that's just a little toooooooooooo much. let's see how they handle this. perhaps it's time to try a honda. but i love my prius.

I think your Toyota dealers are poor in the US, here in the UK our franchise dealers have an excellent reputation and service.... I had a number of abnormal problems with a Toyota which was a problematic car other driver of the same model love it... i was just unfortunate but having a good dealer that sorted it out makes the difference, that's why Toyota do so well in the UK.

Makes me laugh how you all like to throw at lawsuit at anything over there, may need to get it in perspective.a bit ;-)

Hope you all got it sorted.

You must help out by going to the National Highway Safety Administration web site and filing a complaint (www.NHTSA.gov) It will take you about 5 minutes and you will need the VIN number of your vehicle. If enough people who are having this problem complain, Toyota will likely have to issue a recall and pay for the repairs

Interesting . . . I've had the same problem ever since I bought my Prius (2008) and the dealership replaced the first one but now this one is acting up too. Yep, passenger side again; so I went out and bought two new headlight bulbs at AutoZone [Sylvania Xtravision #9003XV-2 for $25] which is "the middle of the road" according to AutoZone. I haven't installed yet; in fact, I was looking up the procedure on-line when I read your comments. I am now thinking that maybe I should take them back and go complain to the dealership. Would appreciate your take on this whole thing.

Side note: 118k miles on vehicle; first headlight problem happened within the first five months and was out of warranty but they covered it anyway (maybe they knew something???). This one is now about 3.5 yrs since the first problem. Not bad considering . . . but sure would like to it corrected once and for all. I do a lot of night time driving.
