HCH CVT strategies

Driving fairly aggressively I averaged 42-46 mpg in my '03 HCH. With the latest gas price surge, I've slowed down a bit and am now getting 48-49, which is pretty staisfactory (almost exclusively highway driving) (I hate losing speed on hills).

Working with the cvt is proving to be a bit of a challenge however. It seems to like to run at 2-3k. My recollection of the last time I had a 5 speed and a tach was that I was often under 2k.

Any advice on what to do to keep the transmision running nicely?
