Greenhouse impact of ethanol

The White House, the corn farmers and, it appears, Detroit all like E85 as a solution to the oil supply problem. How does this fuel compare to gasoline, though, in terms of the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere? (Elsewhere on this site, someone wrote that a gallon of gasoline, when burned, yields 20 pounds of carbon dioxide.
