fuel capacity

I've just purchased a 2008 civic hybrid..Love the car..My only question is, when my fuel gauge reads empty, I fill the gas tank and I can only put in around 9.5 gallons. What is up with this?

If your HCH is like mine it means you can go almost another 100 miles and be thankful that this is possible. (12.4 gallon tank)

Thank you..It's a little scary driving around with no bars on the fuel gauge....
