FEH and drip in front-end

Created August 15, 2005, at 11:46 pm by Anonymous

My 4WD FEH has a slight drip of some type in the front-end. I have 6,000+ miles, and the leak has been there for quite some time.

It may be oil, but it is very light in color (which may be the case because of the lighter weight???)

Anyone else have a similar complaint? I'm having this and an ABS/Brake light problem checked out under warranty in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, though, I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

Hey Kim-

Probably just condensation from the A/C. perfectly normal this time of year. Put a piece of paper under the car when you park to catch drips...Check for color and smell- but I bet it's probably just water.

Just an update, after my warranty service today.

The drip is DEFINITELY an oil leak of some sort. They cleaned up all visible oil and added dye to the oil in the engine. When I return the car for the replacement of the brake master cylinder which is on order from Detroit (also warranty work), they will apply an ultravoilet light to the engine, and figure out where the leak is coming from.

By the way, my visit was to a very large dealership service department. They have ONE certified technician, who is currently working on the 30+ FEH's in the area. He is also the Shop Foreman. I found him very knowledgable, as well as willing to listen. I'm located in Reno, Nevada, and while I have had very good luck with this dealership's body shop in the past, I do not typically frequent their service department (and definitely not their sales department). However, I have been very impressed thus far.

How old was the model that developed the oil leak? And how long was the warranty? Did you purchase an extended warranty? I haven't bought any hybrids yet. My car is getting old and maintenance costs are mounting higher than the blue book price so I am curious how tough these hybrids are and if maintenance costs go beyond oil change, tune ups and servicing. I am especially curious if anyone is experiencing electrical problems for which these hybrids are sold and how long the warranties are on those.

I took delivery of my FEH in late January. It has about 8,000 miles on it. The warranty is 36 months or 36,000 miles. The oil drip started the day I brought the car home (or very shortly thereafter). I just haven't had it checked until now.

I did not purchase the extended warranty.

I have had great luck with the SUV thus far, and it is performing even better than I had possibly hoped!
