Engine Oil Flush At 30k For '06 Hch2??

Created July 12, 2007, at 5:05 pm by mbrunner

I have 27K on my '06 HCH2 and recently brought it in for its periodic service and to have the DC-DC recall performed. The maintenance minder indicated that it was also time for the CVT Fluid to be changed. The dealer stated that the correct procedure was to flush the fluid and then refill. And while this was expensive (~ $160), the service manual states the correct procedure to flush the fluid is to drain and refill the CVT fluid, then drive the car a short way, and repeat until you have drained and refilled 3 times. Half the cost was for the fluid alone.

My question though is that the dealer recommended that at 30K I also flush the engine oil. However, I could find no mention of this in the service manual. When I mentioned it to my service advisor, he stated that it is a service recommended by the dealer. I generally have no problems with the dealership and would have no reason to distrust them, infact they gave me a free oil and filter change this time because of a promotion they are running even though I didn't have "the coupon." :) But, I have never perfromed this service on any of my other cars and I have read that it is a waste of money as long as you perform the oil and filter changes at the specified intervals.

Has anyone run into any problems caused by not flushing the engine oil?

Thanks for the help.

You did well in asking the dealer about the engine oil flush.

Honda does not provide any such recommendation and we view it as a literal waste of money. Flushing the CVT has documented merit and has been part of Honda's procedural recommendations. I am fully confident that the money spent to flush the CVT is well worth it - especially if you plan to keep the vehicle for a long time.

Personally, I'm all for servicing one's vehicle at the dealership because when you visit them for an oil change you may also get one or more discreet software updates that are not part of a formal recall. However, I frown upon unethical dealerships who push gravy and value added service when there's no acknowledged merit (technical or otherwise). I would say that if Honda does not recommend it then it is likely not worth it.
