current wait time, ordering FEH w/ trade-in
Created January 18, 2008, at 8:31 am by jtgonegreen
Hello everyone,
I've been looking for a Ford Escape Hybrid for a while now (I live in Central Florida) and I can't seem to find any dealership with one in stock. Most of the dealerships have told me that it would be about 3 months to get one in. My questions are...
1. Is everyone having this problem finding a FEH locally?
2. (most important) Has anyone ordered a hybrid vehicle and did a trade-in as well? Do you negotiate the set price for your trade-in value the day you order or does this value change the day the vehicle comes in?
3. Have everyone/anyone been able to get their exact vehicle ordered to their liking? (I have one dealer say that they can only order the kiwi green FEHs)

It appears the CA 90210 zip code area is getting most of the '08 FEH's at this time. Ford has not been providing the east coast with many at all from what everyone says.
I would negotiate everything before you order and make sure there are no reductions in your trade of no kind at the time of delivery. Make sure there are no mileage or changes in the book value that would effect your trade. One dealership pulled this with one poster and wanted to decrease the value of his trade-in when his FEH arrived. Also, be aware there can be price increases while your vehicle is being built. This happen to me and cost me $400 more. The dealerships all know that Ford operates this way.
You should be able to order any color and options available. Something is up with that kiwi green only color and I would stay away from a deal with them. I have a broker who deals with the fleet managers at most dealerships who gets me what I want, at a realistic price for hard to get vehicles. He would also negotiate your trade-in for fair market value. He's located in Palm Beach Gardens at my Credit Union. Bought my '05 FEH and a '07 Civic through him and all deals were as he said. We got financing at the Credit Union which was straight forward also and we were pre-approved before the order was signed. I was given my $500 deposit check back at delivery BTW.
GaryG
We ordered our 2008 FEH last May and it was delivered in September. We have done business with the dealership for a long, long time and I wouldn't think of looking elsewhere, though it was a moot point since at the time none of the dealers in this area (southern Wisconsin) had an '08 FEH in stock, anyway.
The salesman told us that most of the hybrids were being sent to the west coast or to NYC to fill their taxi cab orders (I have learned that this was indeed true) making for long waits for those of us in the heartland.
Initially the plan was to sell our 2002 V-6 Escape to a friend of ours when the hybrid came in but he had a change of plans so we ended up trading it instead. We waited to write up the deal until the new one came in since the dealer hadn't asked for a deposit or anything. There was a slight increase in price by the time it arrived, but we hadn't committed so could have taken a pass on it if we had wanted to. We paid sticker minus a $500 incentive and got a trade-in allowance that was more than fair.
We ordered the car exactly the way we wanted. Kiwi Green was the color we wanted anyway, but I think you're being misled if they're telling you that it is your only option.
If any of you remember when the first '05's were built, Ford was only allowing the green States like CA and NY to order the FEH at first. I know here in FL my broker told me I could not even order one till Feb. '05. Some dealerships here that owned dealerships in NY shipped a few down and put them on the showroom floor. I found one at Al Packer Ford in WPB in Dec. '04 and a salesman told me this. They were asking $5000 over sticker so I just said no thanks.
My broker got a call from Maroone Ford in Delray Beach in Dec. '04 and said they were alloted 2 FEH's that were sold, but one buyer got tired of waiting and backed out of the deal. I was offered the FEH at $500 over sticker and took it. It hadn't been built yet, so I was able to change the order for a fully loaded FWD. I got it in Feb. '05 when the dealers were just able to take orders here in FL.
I'm wondering if Ford has resulted to the same tactic and limiting the FEH to the non-green States because of production limits like back in '04. If I recall, Ford was having delays in battery supplies then, and it may be the case now.
GaryG
Well, we DID get ours (eventually) last year. And I do know that another dealer in our area (again, southern Wisconsin had at least one on their lot last summer while we were waiting for ours. Also, I have seen other '08 FEH's and MMH's on the highways here in Wisconsin.
I had heard the theory about the battery supplier, too. I'm a bit skeptical since Toyota seems to get them by the tens of thousands.
I ordered my FEH 4WD on Nov. 6th and still waiting...I am in Toronto, Canada. Now almost 3 months....
I ordered my Kiwi Green 2008 FEH on October 10th, and took delivery on December 19th. This is in the Northern Virginia area.
I had the bad experience (mentioned by GaryG above) of being told that my trade-in was worth $3000 less in December than in October. That resulted in a day-long standoff until the dealer agreed to give me the trade-in allowance written up in October.
I feel lucky to have gotten my FEH so quickly, as I am now seeing other posts around the Internet talking about 18 or more week delays in getting an ordered vehicle delivered.
There is (or was) the issue of Ford losing money on each Hybrid sale. In the last month, Ford has announced they will finally make a profit on the hybrids. This fact (losing money on each sale) also contributed to the limited number of Escape Hybrids. Will Ford make more than 20,000 Hybrid Escape models for 2009? I don't know but the Hybrid Fusion will arrive in late 2008.
Greg, thanks for the info on the 2009 models. We were trying to order an 08 yesterday and the dealer said they had a previous cancellation and might try to use that production spot for our order, otherwise they can't order 08's anymore. I think I'll call them tomorrow and tell them I'll wait for an 09 anyway, sounds like it has enough positive changes to make it worth the wait.
As a side note, I had searched dealer inventory online at over 100 dealers in TX, OK, and NM and only found a four with a hybrid in stock and calls to two of them revealed they had been sold already. So it is pretty much impossible to buy one here without ordering it. They said it would be about 26 weeks before you would get it after you order. They are also selling them for MSRP around here, no deals to be had.
I ordered my 08 Kiwi Green Mercury Mariner in September, and got it 3 1/2 weeks later. I was originally told I would get it in December. I love it, and I did not wait long...but I know a few people who ordered them right after me and had to wait.
I have to let you know , my door seals had not been properly installed, and my car leaked when it rained. I had to take it back to the dealer to get it that fixed, and carpet dryed out, which took a week. So if you take delivery, please be sure to double check your door seals!
Other than that, I love it, and the color is sooo cool. People are always staring.
Hi Jane, more than likely your MMH was already ordered but had not been built yet. This happen to me back in Dec. of '04 when someone canceled their order. I got a call from a broker who deals with most dealerships and he said I could get that vehicle much sooner if I wanted. The good part about the FEH order was that it had not been built yet and I had time to change any options on the order. I made those changes and got a conformation from Ford. It came much sooner with all the changes made from the original order.
Clearly, ordering a MMH and getting it in 3 1/2 weeks is not the norm and I think your lucky things worked out the way they did.
I ordered my 08 FEH over Thanksgiving and received it on Valentine's Day (13 weeks). I was able to negotiate a price with the dealer in advance ($300 over invoice + $500 grad student discount) and got to select all options and a color. I live in Missouri so it was made just down the road in KC. I love it! Thanks for all the great tips and information on this site. :)
Hello;
At this point I'm looking to order an 09 since I want Hands Free and Nav, not an option with the 08. I live in Cali and as of July we can only use hands free or it's a fine. Any idea when we can place an order for a MMH 09?
Hi Tori
I've been told I can't order the '09 FEH yet, but my broker is working on the moment I can. You bring up a good point about ordering a '09 MMH and I'll ask him to also get a Mercury dealer working on it also.
If anyone hears anything about the date we can place an order, please post it here ASAP.
GaryG
My "insider" stated sometime in April 2008 is when you can place an order. The vehicles are to arrive at the dealership in the Summer of 2008.
I stopped at our local Ford dealer tonight just for the heck of it (my wife and I were passing by). I played dumb, just wanting to see what the dealer line was. We said we were interested in a FEH (we drove in in an Explorer). The dealer was surprisingly honest, and told us that Ford would not accept any 08 orders, and he didn't know when we could order an 09. I felt bad for this guy, he was a seasoned sales person, a lifer no doubt. He said he personally could have sold 10 FEH's recently and his co-worker had turned down 9 sales. I really can't afford a new FEH right now, as I just purchased a Nissan hybrid 2 months ago, but I want Ford to know that they are throwing sales away (we do plan on replacing the Explorer in the next 1-2 years with a hybrid, hopefully a PHEV).
Next time you drive by a dealer and have a few minutes, tell them you want to buy a hybrid. Sooner or later the manufacturers will have to get smart.
The problem with the FEH from Ford's bottom line is "they lost money on each sale". This is a true statement as Ford Executive Nancy G. (forgot the spelling) stated Ford will begin to make a profit on the hybrid vehicles in 2008. Thus, Ford had to limit sales due to their financial concerns. Yet they needed to produce hybrids to boost the corporate fuel average and generate good PR. Sales pesons at the dealership are not always the best persons to obtain information from especially in regards to hybrid vehicles. You will obtain better information elsewhere. We know the Escape is only made in Kansas City, Mo. Maybe-wink-monitoring the internet newspapers from this region will provide a tip.
Let me get this straight. They are going to start making a profit in 2008, there is a demand for the vehicle, but you can't order one. Sounds like bad management to me. How many F-150 plants are there?
Also, every single new vehicle ever produced lost money initially.
Ford has to purchase the hybrid components from an outside contractor and they plan in advance how many units will be sold. It is difficult for them to adjust "on the fly" due to this need to purchase their hybrid compoents elsewhere. There is only one plant that produces the Escape-Escape Hybrid-Mariner-Mariner Hybrid and they rolled out somewhere around 160,000 units last year (2007). The Hybrid vehicles are "scheduled" into the assembly line for production. Not enough units are sold to justify another plant facility.
If Ford is going to start making money on hybrid vehicle production in 2008, then do they increase unit numbers in comparison to 2005-2008? Or do they keep the Escape Hybrid at 20,000 units a year and double production of hybrids with the introduction of 2009 Fusion hybrid later in 2008?
In September, 2007, we too wanted to purchase a FEH in Central Florida. I located only two on dealer lots, neither of which was in the color or with the features we wanted. A dealer at Hwy 27 and I-4, Jarrett Gordon Ford, had one of the two we found. They offered to special order what we wanted. A Kiwi Green, with limited options to keep the price down. They sold it to us at dealer cost plus $450.00. We took delivery in Mid December and love the vehicle. We did not have a trade in, but as many of you know, in October, Ford had a price increase of about $1,000 on the FEH. The dealer stuck to our agreed upon price and made no attempt to get us to pay more. End result, we got it for lessa than dealer cost since they had to pay a higher cost. Our salesman did tell us when we took delivery that they can no longer take special orders unless it is for MSRP.
Hi B
Here is one article quoting Nancy Giola on Ford turning a profit on the FEH/MMH:
January 16, 2008
Ford Expects Hybrids To Start Turning Profit
Manufacturing costs for hybrids are dropping.
By the end of this year, Ford Motor Co.'s hybrid vehicle program is expected to be profitable for the first time.
Nancy Gioia, Ford's director of sustainable mobility technologies and hybrid vehicle programs, said that since production started in 2004, Ford has chopped about 30 percent of the cost out of making the Escape, Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute hybrid SUVs.
Yes, hybrids have been loss leaders. That they are becoming profitable is good news. The longer we go before world oil production starts declining the easier it'll be to handle it. Advances in hybrid and battery technologies as well as in wind turbines, photovoltaics, and nuclear technologies will all make the migration away from fossil fuels easier.
GaryG
I got it! Just as my "insider" told me--April is when 2009 FEH order will be accepted and Summer of 2008 they will arrive at the dealer lots. This is the latest news I have:
FEH and MMH
2009 Initial Order Acceptance: 04/17/08
2009 Production Scheduling Begins: 05/15/08
2009 Production Start Up: 06/23/08
However, these dates could change depending upon a variety of factors.
Hope this helps.
Hi Billy
Great find! Thank you! Is there a link or was this information from an inside poster? Today I'll past on the information to my Broker at my Credit Union to try and locate information on options. I want to order all the bells so I need to study the list carefully.
When I ordered my '05, the Fleet Manager told me I could only get the Appearance Package in the gray color. I guess he saw a picture of a gray one with the matching gray bottom and thought it was all you could get. I didn't want the flat black bottom that was standard, so I ask for all the order information. I caught the Fleet Manager's mistake and ordered my FEH in Titanium Green with the appearance package.
John Dixson ordered his '08 MMH thinking he was getting the 110V outlet. When he got his vehicle, that option was missed! To late for changes then. I use my 110V outlet all the time and will make sure I check all the confirmation order paperwork. I also want the new Nav sys and a way to plug-in my HD radio receiver into the speaker system. I got the Visteon HD Jump system that can go in a vehicle as well as in my home 7.1 theater system. The radio sounds like a CD playing and many radio stations in my area have switched to HD radio broadcasting. Also, lets not forget the Block Heater option from the factory. A smaller price to pay and cleaner installation when ordered, and I can always use an increase in MPG during warm-up at todays gas prices.
As soon as I get the order information and cost of options, I'll post them here. Again, if anyone gets this information first, please post it like Billy does.
GaryG
After stopping by my broker's office today who still has not heard anything on an ordering date, I checked the internets (As G W Bush would put it) and found this bit of information on Government ordering. The dates are subject to change, but this was for the '09 Escape and no mention of the Hybrid models.
http://www.bblfleet.com/ford_buildout.pdf
The dates are almost the same as Billy posted.
GaryG
There has been an update today! Go to:http://www.donlen.com/buildstart_trucks_ford.html
it shows Escape hybrid ordering 4-17-08
mid-September for production scheduling October for production start.
I assume this later start is due to the new Ford Fusion Hybrid that uses the same hybrid components. Ford is likely ordering components for both vehicles at the same time. The Fusion is made in Mexico. However, Fusion hybrids were seen ouside the Kansas City Plant in Jan 2007--prior to the start up of the 2008 Escape model year.
Billy, this delay puts Ford behind the eight ball because by the time the '09's arrive, many people would have canceled their order. Six months from 4/17/08 to turn out the first FEH/MMH will drive people hoping to get a tax break for '08 to another manufacture. In addition, holding on to a gas hog for those 6 months plus will be cost prohibitive when people are ready to buy now. Six months also leaves Ford time to increase the price a number of times like I experienced a $500 increase after only one month after I ordered.
BTW, your BillyK sig for this site shows "not verified" and I think all the links you post will not work. Here is the link you posted so other's can click on it: http://www.donlen.com/buildstart_trucks_ford.html
I'd try to get verified for future post BillyK.
Most people buying a Hybrid have come to many of these kinds of sites for research and want to have a heads up before going to the dealers to purchase. I wouldn't want to be a Ford salesman trying to make a living this year. My Broker told me he's doing great with sales because he offers any and all manufactures at near invoice or below. Dealer salesman are being killed right now and it looks like Ford just threw their salesman and dealerships into the fire. The Ford dealership I've been dealing with for over forty years started Toyota and other dealerships and sold their Bev Smith Ford dealership a few weeks ago.
It sounds to me like Ford is going to move the Escape KC plant to Mexico this year and is the reason for the delay. This would also explain why Ford cut off orders for the '08 so soon. Who knows what the reason is, but it's going kill FEH/MMH sales for '09. I'm still going to place my order ASAP, but a lot can change in 6 months from now. The value of our FEH/MMH should hold longer because of this delay, so that's good for most of us here.
GaryG
I was quite perplexed right up until GaryG's comment.
I was heading for the fence on buying an 09 ford escape hybrid. I was conviced this was the vechile. I only had one reservation, my issue, I live in connecticut and I have a driveway that goes up to the road.
With noway to turn around, in the winter, I need 4 wheel drive to get to the road in reverse.
My question to you AWD escape hybrid onwers, was going to be, do all 4 wheels spin when in reverse. I've done some looking on the net and only found a comment that the traction motor alone powers the vehicle in reverse. It does not mention if both electric motors operate. Thats kind of imporant to me.
But that was roughly 5 minutes ago and now, the 09's will be built in Mexico. Damn, Its hard to say what will happen to the quality. But I'm not going to risk my $33,000 on it, guess I'll go with a Santa Fe.
Signing off.....
Paul, I don't know why Ford has delayed the '09 FEH, but I'm pissed also. I checked the news from Ford and the KC local news, and it looks like Ford spent 200 mil improving the KC plant recently. This may mean no transfer to Mexico may be in the cards.
As far as reverse, the engine will charge the generator for power to the traction motor for AWD in reverse. By all means, go with the Santa Fe if you think it's not worth the wait, I think Ford has messed-up big time myself with this delay. Good luck with your choice!
GaryG
GaryG. hold onto your comment about the Escape plant moving to Mexico. Reading the posted data, one realizes the non-hybrid 2009 Escape vehicles are going to be starting in June of 2008. The hybrid and non-hybrid Escape both share the same body and components other than the hybrid ones. Based upon this fact, the hybrid Escape would have to be built in Kansas City. It would cost Ford a fortune to dial up the Mexican Plant for both the Fusion body and Escape body and this doesn't make sense at all especially when the hybrid version is 20,000 units. I believe the reason for the delay deals with Ford needing to purchase the hybrid components for not only the Escape but also the Fusion. Could there be a "lag" due to Sanyo hybrid battery production? could Ford be getting a "better" discount by purchasing more units at one time? Is Ford waiting for payment on the sale of Land Rover to help purchase these hybrid components?
I'm the same guy that lives in Southwestern Pa but am currently in Northern Wisconsin (good 18 inches of snow on the ground) due to a cancer battle a family member is slowly losing. That is another matter.
As for the AWD question, I have it and it is unlikely you will ever get stuck. You indicate the driveway goes up to the house, then I assume it means you back down the driveway and this fact should ease your worries. The electric motors you refer to have lots of torque at low RPMs. Where you live, a Northeaster Storm may dump a lot of snow in a very short period of time. However, when these occur, warnings are posted to stay home until the roads are cleared.
Gary also mention Ford is experiencing changes internally and with their dealership network. That is true. Something has to give when you lose the money they have in recent years. Those waiting for the new 2009 Escape Hybrid have no alternative other than purchasing an different hybrid. A potential lost sale for Ford is ture. My experience with salestaff at four different Ford dealerships last year was the sales staff pull out the "numbers" sheet and try to convice you it is cheaper to buy a non-hybrid. I'm glad I didn't listen very hard to this sales pitch.
Slow down a bit. The "donlen" site is a fleet site, and when my employer ordered some FEH's, it took about 6 months for those vehicles to be delivered compared to the 3 months for the one I ordered. All dealers are not given the same priority, and I'd guess that fleet sales could have a lower priority as well.
Regarding the inquiry about an FEH in the snow:
I live in Southern Wisconsin and we got MORE snow overall than Northern Wisconsin this winter. On more than one occasion I had to back out of the garage through a good 12 - 18 inches of snow. My 2008 FEH went through it as if it wasn't even there -- in reverse.
The drive train doesn't seem to care where the torque is coming from, all four wheels get power if they need it.
This was our first winter with this Escape (we've had 3 before this one) and it seems to handle deep snow better than any previous Escape that we've owned. (This is the first one we've had with automatic 4WD, the others were either FWD or manual 4WD.) I've also been very impressed with the braking on snow and ice. The ABS on this Escape engages more smoothly and works more effectively than any car I've owned.
Hi Eman
Hope your right about FEH/MMH fleet purchases, but like Billy said, the standard Escape dates didn't changed. There is only about 20 days till orders start and there are still no information on options or cost of the '09's. I've seen many post now where Ford canceled '08 orders, and their saying dealers are not being told when the '09 orders will be accepted.
When I ordered my '05, orders were not taken till Feb '05 here in Florida. The dealer my broker used was alloted to order two in Nov '04 here before the public, and they sold me one of their allotments which arrived in Feb. '05.
I agree we don't need to jump to conclusions because we're going to have to wait and see what the Ford website post and the dealers are told.
GaryG
Hi There:
Thanks mdensch for the comment about the snow, it really worried me. The wife has a Malibu and backs out of the driveway as well. Theres a kind of an anti slip for the front wheel drive which really freaked me out when she could not get out of the driveway one day. Neat but sometimes doesn't help unless I get the dirt out. My current 4 wheel drive backs out without a problem with the same conditions, but I have manual hubs. It was the technology of the time.
I'm hoping that when in reverse and the front wheels begin to slip that the back wheels willl activate. Thats what I am hoping for anyway.
For GaryG and Billyk. Today we went to checkout an 08 escape non Hybrid, just so she can sit in it and compare to the Santa Fe. She thought the Santa Fe was more like a miniVan. She thinks the Escape is more like the Rodeo than the Santa Fe was. I had forgotten how much I liked the interior of the escape since test driving an 08 hybrid a while back. But she seems to think that the cargo room will be OK. I lose 10 cu. ft. with the escape but thats better an the Vue.
Anyway Sorry I digrese. I spoke to the sales guy about the 09's, he said that currently Ford has a commitment to NY city TAXI's. I guess those orders have to be filled by some date.
I agree with that, we were down there recently visiting some friend, we went to Manhatten, (I love it but can't stand to drive there), all of the public buses are running on Natural gas. I think there is a real commitment by NY to get all the public transportation to Green.
Anyway, that might be the reason for the wait.
I actually know two people that have the Santa Fe for vehicles and one lives right behind me. Both of them have high praise for he vehicle except for one item: Gas mileage. They report arouind 14 miles a gallon overall and maybe 20 mpg on the highway. It is true the Santa Fe is larger than the Escape but I am unsure what the weight difference is.
This internet link is from a Kansas City newspaper: http://news.edgar-online.com/news/fis_story.asp?textpath=COMTEX%5Cko%5C2...
that reveals the Escape Hybrid will be offerred this summer. The link is old 1-22-08 but state the Escape Hybrid will be built here not in Mexico.
Hi Billy
Not sure that news paper is correct about the FEH/MMH and most likely doesn't understand the difference between the 2.5 gas Escape. Here's what I mean:
"The new Escape Hybrid also will have a 2.5-liter engine that will boost horsepower 11 percent."
The paper doesn't quote anyone from Ford directly like all other news articles did and the others were careful saying the the Escape and Mariner 2.5L boosted horsepower 11 percent. I've been carefully reading all the articles to find any information on what horsepower if any was gained on the Atkinson version of the new 2.5L. Same thing with only the 1mpg gain on the gas Escape/Mariner, I've been waiting to hear Ford say what MPG gains if any were with the 2.5L FEH/MMH.
Sounds like the news paper got their information second hand from a local Ford dealer or salesman. We all know the quality of information we got from the Ford dealerships.
That aside, I spoke to my vehicle Broker again today, and there was no news from his fleet manager he deals with. He confirmed one reason there is a delay with Fleet Purchases was Ford puts a priority on retail sales. Those that want to get their '09 FEH/MMH ASAP, may want to ask dealerships if they were alloted any, and if they were for sale. Today, I ask my Broker to check on this so I could put money down on one and change the options and color after it is waiting to be built. This is basically how I got my '05 FEH early.
Isn't this the problem:
"Ford suspects it may be getting squeezed out by its Japanese rivals. With the fall launch of the gas-electric Mercury Mariner, Ford is tripling its hybrid SUV lineup over three years. But its transmission supplier, Aisin Seiki Co. Ltd., can boost deliveries by only 20 percent, to 24,000 transmissions annually." http://detroitnews.com/2005/autosinsider/0508/08/A01-272872.htm
AND AN UPDATE
"Aisin Seiki Co., an affiliate of Toyota Motor Corp., plans to increase its supply of core motor systems for hybrid vehicles to Ford Motor Co.....The Ford Escape Hybrid and Mercury Mariner Hybrid are equipped with Ford’s first-generation transaxle, which Ford developed jointly with Aisin AW...Aisin has supplied dual-motor systems to Ford since 2004, with shipments currently reaching around 20,000 systems a year...." from

Hello everyone. This is my first time posting a comment, but I've been reading many of them for the past few weeks. I've been checking out hybrids for a couple months, and after reading about the improvements on the '09 FEH & MMH I became very interested in them. In the meantime I wanted to make sure I was comfortable with the vehicle, so I went about finding an '08 to drive for a firsthand experience. I quickly found out how elusive they were, but I was lucky enough to contact a salesman from my local L-M dealer (North Coast in Willoughby, OH) who was about to get one in. I drove it last month and came away generally impressed, but reaffirmed in my desire for an '09 that I could order the way I liked. While I have decided to wait, I thought someone might be interested in getting one immediately. I drove by yesterday, and it's still available. If anyone's interested they should contact Jarred Hill at sales@northcoastlm.net for more info. It's Kiwi Green w/4wd , leather , and moon and tune. I hope this helps someone out. I have a couple of questions of my own that someone may be able to answer, but I'll post them in a more appropriate topic. Until next time, happy motoring ! DD
For GaryG and others waiting to get a 2009 FEH, I got an email from my dealer today stating that they had the new ordering guide! Pricing and actual placing of orders should be sometime next week.
Thanks Eman
I'll be at my Broker's office in the morning with a down payment! I was hoping those dates were correct that Billy posted!
If one goes to the Greenhybrid.com site, you will find a "poor scaned copy of the FEH options" that was sent to one of the posters. This poster claims the dealers will accept orders for the 2009 FEH sometime next week. Here is the link: http://www.greenhybrid.com/discuss/f26/2009-order-build-dates-17505/
you will have to click on a file attachment for this open.
Hey Billy
I got a printout of those documents to take with me, thanks. I'm hearing the '09 Prius won't be available till Feb. - March '09 now, what a bummer if that true.
Does anyone see where to order the 110V outlet on the '09?
I found it, it's now standard equipment on all '09 FEH's.
Gary;
Where are you getting your info from?
41H option is for the engine block heater. This is a fleet option and is standard for vehicles sold in the cold weather states. I was able to purchase this seperately via Ford Dealership after I obtained my "new" Escape Hybrid last June.
Hi Paul
Had to join the Blue Oval Forum to access a link "2009MY Escape & Escape Hybrid Fast Turn Orders". This link is far better than the faxed link Billy provided. They're are 12 pages on options and packages, and there very clear to read.
My Broker was in Atlanta Friday and the Fleet manager he told me to contact didn't know anything about the FEH order information. With this link, I printed everything I needed to know to order my '09 FEH.
http://www.blueovalforums.com/forums/index.php?s=035f9d0912431de743874e8...
I'm going with the FWD FEH Limited W/ Nav, Black Pearl. Everything is included in Package FTO 8 except the Nav and the color. The side step is the only thing that is another option, and my wife and I don't care for it on my Explorer.
Ford is staying with the 330V battery, and not going with the smaller 275V for the Fusion/Milan. I sure hope they change to the new variable voltage converter, but I see no information to confirm. It looks like the Limited FEH gets new polished alum wheels and the standard FEH stayed with the present FEH wheels.
I noticed the 330 volt battery. It kind of changes what ford was saying earlier.
I hate to write it, but the one of the benefits behind the smaller battery was to produce less heat. Then the air conditionair wasn't needed and they could use airflow from the VVC to keep it cool. It just doesn't look like they did anywork in that area.
Matter of fact the only two areas I can see they did anything was added the new motor, which is a big deal and change the Marketing of the FEH. Instead of Hybrid Premium package, which you were forced to get leather, you now order the limited version. How toyota-ish.
Paul, the heat problem came mainly from the way the voltage went into and out of the battery via the old voltage converter. I was hoping Ford would stay with the bigger 330V battery pack and just delete the auxiliary battery A/C. The big question is, did Ford change to the Variable Voltage converter in the eCVT. This would allow the FEH higher EV speeds with longer distances than we have now. Changing to the 275V battery may have resulted in a lost of EV performance for the heavier FEH/MMH. I had a big concern this would happen, but of course now I know they stayed with the 330V.
As far as ordering changes, Ford has been losing money on all FEH/MMH and will finally start making a profit this summer. My fully loaded '05 had about the same MSRP as the '09 Limited with far less options. The Nav system comes with the 7 speakers and subwoofer which I have and love in my '05. The subwoofer is the key if you want a great stock sound system that works with all the other computer systems without warranty problems.
There are a number of items like heated seats I really don't need here in So. FL, but it's part of the package. The fact is, I'm very pleased I will get all these options at a discounted price in a package. This should speed-up production and eliminate forgetting options when ordering. For those looking for one on the lot, it will be much easier finding the options you want or need.
My awesome '05 FEH can only be replaced with an even more awesome '09. There are so many improvements in the '08 FEH/MMH, I know the '09 will kick the crap out of my '05. There is nothing Toyota-ish about a Ford SUV that got 61.8mpg in front of the world at Hybridfest.
GaryG, I ran across this article on the upcoming Toyota Prius: http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/the-great-hybrid-showdown-chevrolet-vol...
I know your interested in this for your wife and this is the Ford Escape site so I will cut off my comments and let you do some reading.
Thanks Billy
I missed that great article, but it sounds like the 2010 Prius is due out in January '09. What happen to the '09 Prius if this is the case? My Wife is up for the next new vehicle and we're waiting on the '09 Prius! It looks like the '09 FEH will get to me before the Prius, and she is not going to like to see me with two new cars in a row.
If anyone has any more information on the '09 Prius, please let me know.
It seems there is confusion is on the first page of the ordering guide under FTO package contents. On that page, it indicates the navigation system is part of the FTO 8 package. On page 7 of the ordering guide, it states the navigation system is optional on the Limited Hybrid. According to a quote I got, the navigation system was listed as a $2395 option with the U49 4DR FWD HYD LTD at $30,635. This put the '09 FWD FEH Limited W/Nav MSRP at $33,725 ($30635 + $2395 + $695 shipping), plus tax and tag. On the GH site, one person posted his '09 AWD FEH Limited order retailed for $32,385 plus $695 shipping. I think people, including dealerships are looking at the first page thinking the Navigation system is included, and not an option that adds $2395 to the MSRP. This would put the '09 AWD FEH Limited W/Nav at a MSRP at $35,475 plus tax and tag. If the dealerships are just ordering the FTO 8 package, I hope the computer adds the navigation 60N option and gives the right MSRP amount.
The way I read the ordering guide, you must include the navigation system to have a "Fast Turn Order" (FTO) 8 package. I also wonder if you don't include the navigation system on the limited package, you cannot order a FTO 8 and it might have a delayed built date over the FTO 8 package. Anyone?
Got my '09 FEH conformation order back from Ford yesterday afternoon. The deal was MSRP at $33,725, plus Tax and Tag and no dealer fees. Not what I wanted to pay, but hopefully I'll make the full tax incentive before that ends.
I really like the new Hybrid Limited package deal and with the navigation system, the only other option left is the side steps that will most likely reduce MPG. Cougar (another poster here) ordered the same package and color, so we will be comparing order updates till we get the vehicles here.
A side update: Channel 25 (ABC) here in SO. FL did a story on me and Hypermiling today. The interview included filming me Hypermiling around Jupiter in my '05 FEH. They film me shifting to increase MPG which the cameraman thought was very interesting. The story will be edited today and shown Thursday on the 6pm News here. Not sure if it will be aired on National News at this point.
Hey Gary,
I was combing over the ordering package, here in CT its hard to find anyone to take your order. I've been to two dealerships that told me to come back next month.
Anyway, I've been really upset over the Limited package. That was until I realized that there is no difference between the 09 limited package and the Premium Package in the 08. In order to get the 08 premium package, you had to include leather anyway. Thats what I meant by being toyota-ish in my previous post. There is a highlander and a highlander limited, it looks as if Ford is following suit. Heated seats and mirrors were part of the Premium package and the stickler for me was the cargo cover comes with 09 limited and 08 Premium package, but not 09 standard hybrid.
I have noticed here in CT that not many Escapes have crossbars on the roofs. I thought that the dealers must be swiping them, that was until I saw that in the 09, the crossbars were extra unless you got the limited.
The only interior advantage over the 08 is the audio controlls on the steering wheel and Sync, which from what I here is a nightmare with the new navigation system. Still nice to have, they have to keep up GM here, since I believe Escapes were the last of the Fords to get the steering wheel controls.
Well the 09 has got the bigger enigine and the ESC stability control, that is something, really! That must have been a technologial nightmare to get the regerating brakes to work with the ESC system. I bet they disabled the reg braking system when the computer thinks the vehicle will stid, but I'm just guessing.
I am really interested if they removed the air conditioner from the battery compartment, that will be wild if they did!!
The Hitch is still not available for the 09 hybrid, yet they has 1000lbs for towing, this might be an indicator that the airconditioning is still there.
Well I can't complain, car manufactures are like NASA manned flights,, they have to really prove something before they start production. Its a good stragagy, but leaves me wanting...
I think 2010 will be the year for the Escape Hybrid, but I can't wait, My Rodeo is about to cave in on itself and if I wait another year or two, I will be forced to get a conventional gas engine, not the way to go today.
Gary, is there anyway you can make a copy of this? I'm sure there are individuals such as myself that will pay a small fee plus postage for a learning experience.
Billy, I'm going to try to to get a DVD from my daughter who was going to record it. You might be able to order it from Channel 25 at this link: http://www.wpbf.com/station/index.html
The story might also play after the broadcast on their main website at:
http://www.wpbf.com/index.html
Yesterday a friend called me and said he saw the story on the 6pm news, but that was just a small bit about tonights full story.
Paul, maybe the reason you can't order a '09 FEH is because those dealerships were not alloted any yet. This also may be the reason the dealership I went through would only give up one of their alloted units at MSRP. If you are interested in using my Broker, I'm sure he could have one drop-shipped to a dealer near you for a small fee.
Hi Gary:
Thank You, Wow never had that done before. Well I'm going to wait at least one week more. The sale person I'm speaking with told me with seems like he wants to help me, but they don't even have pricing right now. So will see!
Thanks for the offer!!
-paul
I can't find your story on the website. Will have to wait for someone to intervene.
Hi Billy
The story did not show much instructional information so I don't think it would help you. It showed me shifting, but you needed to see the where and when I shift which is about timing. The problem is the camera can't show the view though the windshield and the shifter at the same time.
Everyone thought it was a good story that I talked too, but I could see you could not learn how to hypermile from it. They showed me taking my right shoe off for the feel of the accelerator, having my tires at 50psi, the SGII's and the Navi energy screen. It was more of a story about going to these forums and exchanging ideas about how to save gas and becoming a hypermiler with any vehicle. They did show the piece of me badmouthing Big Oil over and over as an attention getter before the full story was aired.
We ordered a 2008 FEH April 18th. After reading these posts I have a few questions as I feel I may have been swindled!! The dealership said that April 18th was the last day to orer for the current production run. He said we should see it in 4-8wks. Could this be anywhere close to the truth? He said Ford would call me to verify I was actually buying it because many dealers got caught making a fake order, only to back out and the dealer gets the FEH. I have not received a call from Ford. I called him back today and he said I should get a call as soon as they make a IN number. Should I try and get my deposit back and run away very fast?!!?
Hi NicP
Ordering the '08 FEH not only has been stopped, but orders have been canceled that have been on order. The dealership near me had two new '08 models as of last week which was strange because they were dry the last 6 months. The game of asking MSRP plus for the '08 model is over this time of the year. More than likely the dealership is trying sell a unit that is on its way or from another dealership. As long as they have your deposit, they have time to locate one and sell it to you at a high price.
Ask them for a copy of the conformation order with your name on it, because they get that long before a final VIN number. I order my '09 and got a quick conformation on the options and the price a day or two later. I'm paying MSRP with no other dealer fees and being told you can't get the X plan on these '09 orders yet. Some people are saying their getting the X plan price, but my broker said that not possible in this market of supply and demand for ordering a '09 FEH. When someone receives an '09 FEH at X plan and confirmed they didn't get screwed, I'll believe it then.
Hey Gary:
Just so you know, a dealership around here (CT) is receiving thier 08's FEH shortly. Matter of fact that dealership would not allow me to order the 09, I think you remember my posts. The sales guy wanted to sell me one of the 08's. I found another dealership that works directly with my company for fleet orders, He is going to take my order and it will be an X-plan order. I've already discussed that matter.
He said that mostly that X-plans will be placed into the system, but it could take up to 6 months before the car comes in, because Fleets and retails get orders first, than X-plans. I told him that was OK.
I will be placing my order on Saturday because its the earlist I can get there.

Just in case anybody cares,
It looks as if Ford has pushed back the Production start up date to October.
I found the following link at Edmunds.
http://www.donlen.com/buildstart_trucks_ford.html
http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.ef7b234
Hey Paul
The Donlen order information has been pointed out as for fleet sales purchases. My broker tells me retail orders are handled first, and I sure hope he's right. I did see a Ford order information sheet with a MatL in the space for the Escape Hybrid. I wondered if that means materials are limited or something.
Keep posting anything on the '09 so we can stay on top of the information as Ford releases it.
The Donlen order information has been pointed out as for fleet sales purchases. My broker tells me retail orders are handled first,
I hope your right as well, but I thought the reason for the push back was that Ford was going to deliver the rest of the Contract for N.Y. City cabs. Well thats what I thought anyway.
I'm probably wrong. I'll let you know how my purchase goes this saturday.

Gary:
Just to let you know that I did finally place my order. I have not gotten my confirmation as of yet, I think you said two days. So if I don't see the confirmation within the week, I'll make a phone call.
The second two dates are accurate for the gasoline Escapes, not the FEH. The dates for the FEH are:
2009 Production Scheduling Begins: mid-September
2009 Production Start Up: October
Notice how they don't quote precise dates? Sounds like they want considerably more wiggle-room on the FEH vs. the gasoline Escapes.
This may or may not be true, but I've been told...
Whenever possible, when placing a deposit, use a money order from the post office. Apparently if there is any wrong doing, it becomes a federal offense. Or it could be just legend.
I ordered my 2009 FEH Limited FWD last week. The only option I added was the side steps. Was able to sign a contract for $875 below MSRP. My dealer states that he doesn't expect the '09's to begin showing up until the end of July - but that production is scheduled to begin June 23rd (with scheduling begining May 15) - the Sept - Oct dates apply to fleet sales.
Does anyone know if the Escape/Mariner Tax credit is still valid? I checked the irs.gov website but it only has a year old statement on the credit, which it said was still good. My Ford dealer said the credit no longer applies to the Escape Mariner because they have sold more than 60,000 since they first came out in 2005, (~ 70,000 by now). I have been searching the web for more information on this issue but I have come up with nothing.
I have an 09 ordered, but may not take it without the tax incentive. Maybe we need to write our Congress people.
Thanks for any help.
As of Second Quarter '08, the tax credit is still good - which means you are fine through Sep '08 because of how the decrease is structured. The tax credit only applies to the vehicles sold in '06 forward and only to retail sales.
Once it hits the 60,000 sales mark, the full credit (3,000 for FWD, 2,300 for 4WD) will drop to half following the the next quarter.
Regarding the tax credit, here are some useful links:

One more link regarding tax credits - when Ford reaches the 60,000 cap, it will be listed on this page:
http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=161076,00.html
And with a straight face, the IRS site claims, "Updated frequently — last updated Feb. 22, 2008."
This has definitely been the most informative forum group on this subject that I have yet to encounter, thanks so much for the links and info!
Can someone spot check me on the order process? I just want to make sure I'm not getting the run around from the dealer.
I ordered my 2009 FEH XLT on jun 2 08. The dealer is telling me I wont hear anything back before the end of the month at the earliest??? That seems an awful long lag time before even getting some form of confirmation of the order?
What happens after you order a FEH? My assumption is as follows:
Place the order (with deposit or not)
Dealer sends order to ??? Factory?
Factory acknowledges the order back to dealer / me?
Order is place in a queue to be built schedule
At some point, vehicle is actually built
Some time later, vehicle is delivered to dealership?
Thanks in advance for your input.
just got my '08 FEH in yesterday!
here's how my order went and i hope this helps a little:
-dealer took my order in the last week of Feb on an '09 FEH. he decided to allow me to order w/o a deposit (and i'm on the x-plan). he wouldn't know the built start dates until mid-april.
-in mid-april, he did find that the base price of the '09 FEH went up a little, and that the build dates were to be in mid June. he also checked to see when they could build my order, which would possibly end up being in early august which meant i wouldn't be able to see it until mid-august. the reason being, from what he heard (and from what i've been reading also online), is that states such as California and New York get first priority.
-i received a call from him a week later and he discussed options with trying to order an '08 FEH. he looked into it and was able to place an order for an '08 FEH for a build week of the last week of May. barring any slow downs (shortages of batteries, etc), i would receive it mid June.
-got a call from the dealer on Monday 6/09 and i was there that night. we closed the deal the next morning.
my situation was a little different b/c the dealer was able to order an '08 last minute. the dealer was tremendously helpful and we kept in contact via email once a month per his request. i would contact the dealer at the end of the month just to check status. he should be able to get a build week, and if everything goes as planned barring no slow downs, you should get it in a couple of weeks from the build week.
i would also like to thank everyone for their replies/posts. to garyG, thanks for the input initally; i'm hoping to utilize your hypermiling techniques in the upcoming days. if anyone is in the central florida area and looking for a helpful dealer, let me know and i'll refer you to where i went.
Hi jtgonegreen
Congrads on getting you new FEH! If you didn't know, Florida requires all gas stations to change from regular gas to 10% ethanol. Port Everglades had to convert their storage tanks and pumps and now E-10 is all I can get. I've had a hard time getting my FEH adjusted to this crap, but all the pumps now have a sticker saying "This gasoline contains a maximum of 10% ethanol". Big oil is watering down our gas now and charging more.
Everyone has more of a reason to start hypermiling with gas prices over $4 a watered down gallon. If you or anyone comes down to Jupiter, I'll try to meet you for a free lesson in hypermiling. All you need to do is start a thread requesting a time and date. I'll return a post to confirm a meeting place. This goes for all years FEH/MMH owners or soon to be owners.
jtgonegreen, congrats on your new FEH! I was very excited when I got mine this time last year. Gary, how much of an MPG hit are you taking with the 90/10 gas/ethanol blend? My mileage has gotten better as I've broken the vehicle in, but I still believe that this corn fuel has taken some miles off the tank. I for one would be interested in that lesson... maybe other folks would too.
Hi Evlar
I have to work much harder at hypermiling than ever before to average 43mpg tanks. Last year it was no problem averaging 45mpg tanks with day averages if I tried hard would be ~47 - 48mpg. I continue to wait for my fuel maps to adjust to the ethanol, but I'm on my 4th tank with only a slight improvement. If things don't improve soon, I'm going to start altering some of my techniques with battery management. Since I mainly drive with a low SoC, this puts a heavy engine load when the small generator is working hard to recharge the low battery. This and the A/C compressor really are effecting the lower energy of E-10. Never has my instant MPG readings been this low under that load.
I've thought about keeping the SoC higher so the generator wouldn't put such a heavy load on the engine, but if my SoC is over 41.6% when I do a fake shift in "L", the engine shuts down for EV to early. The way I drop the SoC in EV to ~40%, I can get a much more controlled FS in "L" without the engine shutting off. With the second FS, my SoC is above 43% when it's fine for the engine to shutdown for EV driving and coasting. Now that it's hot here, I guess I can just turn Max A/C on for the first FS to prevent going EV to soon.
I keep trying to justify why I got 61.8mpg during the MPG Challenge with E-10. Now I'm thinking it was the rolling hills that made the E-10 seem as good as straight gas. It makes me think I would have gotten 75-85mpg had Debbie's FEH had and was adjusted to straight gas. It also makes me think that I have a big handicap driving the flat roads of So. Florida now. If the fuel maps don't adjust any better than they have so far, ethanol is going to get some bad reviews by me again.
Evlar, just give me a date and time when your ready. Wayne Gerdes calls these hypermiling lessons "Clinics", so I think it's better to continue with that term.
The question about ordering the '09 FEH/MMH and Fleet Sales ordering has been brought up. Here is a confirmation about fleet sales:
Late Fleet Availability for 2009 Escape
and Mariner Hybrid
Fleet production for the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid and Mercury
Mariner Hybrid will be delayed until the fourth quarter of 2008,
Ford announced.
The manufacturer will begin accepting hybrid orders on April
17, 2008; however, fleet requests will be placed on material hold
until the fall. Scheduling for 2009 hybrid fleet orders is estimated
to begin in mid-September.
http://www.arifleet.com/efnews/ef2008/EF804.pdf
Ford needs those retail sales it appears!
Placed my order 5/1/2008, and dealer called today with a 7/7 to 7/11 delivery date. I can't wait!!
Chris
Where are you located, and can you provide other details on your specific experiance? I am in Texas. I ordered mine on 05/30 or 06/01 and last word I got from the dealer was they wont know anything at all until 'sometime' in July. I'd love to think that based on your experiance, my FEH would be in, in early August, but I'm just getting a long wait feeling from the dealer. The dealer has not even come through with a confirmation number or anything that says the factory has acknowledged my order. I also asked about X-Plan pricing and that was pretty much just a flat out no.
thanks in advance
cab2
I was told this afternoon that my order has been allocated and sent to the KC plant. The Dealership said I should have a Vin # next Tuesday. My order started on 4/22/08 and I got a confirmation and priority #40 that day. On 4/29/08 I got another confirmation with my name on the order with a priority # of 14 which was move up from 40. The dealership said I should have my unit in about 4 weeks. Not sure the dealership knows the KC plant closes for two weeks in early July for vacations. I suspect an early August delivery at best. I heard the KC Plant is working all three shifts now which may help.
We placed an order on 5/28. A week later we received the confirmation.
BTW, our dealer did Xplan pricing although they wanted a deposit of $1,000.
Cab2,
I'm in Illinois, and ordered from a friend of my dad. He is sales manager at a dealership in Indiana. He also gave me the X plan pricing.
So I live in California. If I did not order an Escape Hybrid, When can I expect to see them on the lots for sale?
Hi Laura
California dealers get a priority number of units for retail sales. Many order cancellations should result in the FEH/MMH being available on the lots starting in July. June 23 was the date retail units began rolling off the assembly line. I'm being told that units for stock by the dealers hasn't began here in Florida, but that may not apply to your State. Last years model was hard to find in different area of the Country, but many California dealers had plenty at a much better price.
so, does anyone know if the production line started for the FEH or MMH this week? I've still yet to hear word one from my dealer on my order. Not even a confirmation that my order has been accepted by the factory.
I've been seeing some conflicting information on a few different forums. One guy is claiming his vehicle is being delivered 7/7. Wonder if he actually ordered a hybrid.
On 2 other forums they show that productions isn't starting until October because of part unavailability. See this link: http://www.donlen.com/buildstart_trucks_ford.html
JimO
Ford has started production on the FEH/MMH as we speak. This was released today, but I've heard this for about a week now.
•Ford said last week that it is adding a third shift at a Kansas City plant making its Escape hybrid and Mercury Mariner hybrid. And it said the European Ford Focus and Fiesta, next-generation small cars, will begin production in North America in 20
