Couple of newbie questions

Created February 1, 2007, at 7:15 pm by mx41

Hello!

I just bought the 2005 Prius and I have a few questions

1) What is that small orange light icon on the dashboard represent?

2) What exactly does B on the gear shift do? I hear that it stops the engine and decelerates, but what situations would one use B for?

Thanks!

The B is a "low gear" which will also actively charge the battery. You might use this option going town a steep grade like a hill or a mountainside so you don't have to overwork your brakes. Search the forum and you will find more information on this.

You should rarely use your B gear if at all. My wife used it all the time to and avg a 48 MPG. Now using brakes instead she avg 54 MPG. There is no charging benefit over use of conventional breaks. I do not recall an orange icon. What does it look like?

I've been able to get my orange low tire pressure light to come on when I got a flat and my orange traction control light to come on when I spun out in sand.
