Classic diesel-electric solution?
Created November 4, 2005, at 1:52 pm by Anonymous
There are a couple of us in my family with some experience with diesel-electric motive systems. It occurs to me that with today's perfectly acceptable constant-velocity transmissions, this is a solution begging for prototyping.
A constant velocity diesel -- using the cleaner fuel now available [or bio-diesel] -- generating electricity to drive motor[s] -- and providing appropriate torque via a CVT should be an efficient solution to energy/environmental problems in personal transportation.
Sorry for the long sentences. 2 extra cups of coffee, this morning.

Why use the CVT? With an electric drive train, why do we need a transmission to connect the diesel to the wheels at all? Just a clutch should suffice if one insists on a parallel hybrid topology.
