The Controller Area Network (CAN) system in some modern automobiles is not an operating system but rather a data bus that controls various subsystems around the vehicle. It is conceptually similiar to other data bus architectures such as RS232, ethernet, ATM, etc, except that it is optimized for the automotive and industrial control environment.
