Can Honda Civic Hybrid to keep up in the cold weather

Created July 11, 2007, at 10:43 am by Zhanar

Hello guys,
I am considering possibilty to buy a new Honda Civic Hybrid. I have never owned any hybrid cars before. So, my concern is whether Honda Civic Hybrid will be able to function properly in severe climate like hot summers 104 F and cold winters below zero by Fahrenheit (or -40 by Celsius) with heavy snow or under this condition it is better to have a regular one?
I would appreciate very much if anyone could answer.

Maybe I am somewhat qualified to answer on this one.

I have a 06 HCH and recently purchased another 07 HCH for my wife. My temps (where I live) do get down to -40 C (-40F) and the winters last for 5-6 months.
Our prairie summers are the polar opposites with temps reaching 38C (100F) and even higher for many days and even weeks.

The HCH is more than able to cope with the different extremes. For winter duty you'll definitely need good winter tires and an engine block heater, that's it ! Your mileage will not be good (as expected) unless the car has a chance of warming up on longer drives. In extreme low temps the hybrid functions will not likely be fully working. That's life.

In the summer, you must use your AC wisely so as to not worsen your fuel economy... but also to prevent the hybrid functionality from cutting off due to extreme heat. That too is life.

Other than that, I suggest you read through the tips in this forum just to get an idea of what other things you can do to increase your enjoyment of this great car.

I own a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid and live in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The winters get very cold here and I bought my hybrid in Oct. It held up very well and got good miles (about 41 MPG throughout the whole winter). Very relaxing, energy effiecient car. Such a great car, my wife takes it and leaves me with her SUV half the time. She isnt in to hybrids live I am, and she just loves the car.

I've got about 1300 miles on an 07. As noted in another thread, we've had a lot of 110F/43C + days here this year. I've had the Honda for the last three weeks and haven't had any issues other than my wife insisting that I run the A/C when it's over 95. ;)
