Brake Failure

Created October 26, 2006, at 11:00 pm by Raewyn McMains

Any one else with a similar experience or advice? While driving about 40 miles an hour on a commerical strip the brake warning light came on at the same time that the brakes completely failed. Just missed a few cars and was able to get into a parking lot, shift into low, and run uphill into a curb. The dealer is baffled. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is not the parking brake problem that led to the recall.

Thanks

I have to wonder , where were the regenerative brakes when this happened.
the brake warning light indicates low fluid level or loss of pressure in the brake circuit. what happened to the dual diagonal brake system which has been around for decades and should have given you some brakes after one side failed?

thanks even though I only understand about half. I'll take that note back to the dealer and hope it helps them to diagnose the problem. When checked the brake fluid was not full but was not significantly low either. Is the FEH brake system particularly susceptible to even slightly less than full fluid? Do I understand you to say that even if that brake system went we should still have had braking power from the degenerative brakes? Is it ever useful to go directly to Ford as opposed to the dealer?

thanks

You said you shifted into L. When you did this, did you feel the vehicle start to decelerate more? If so, the regenerative braking was working, to an extent.

If pushing the brake pedal had no effect at all, then I would suspect a problem with the brake by wire system. The FEH doesn't have a mechanical brake or throttle like most conventional vehicles, it just takes the pedal input/position and feeds that to the control system which then delivers the requested result.

Since we essentially have two braking systems, if the hydraulic brakes failed due to low fluid or some other mechanical issue, the regen should still have been able to slow you to almost a complete stop (unless the HV battery was already topped off and regen was not allowed).

again thanks - we'll feed that into the dealer and see what happens

The vehicle had just come up a fairly long incline during which the electric motor had not engaged so the battery should have been fully charged

My '05 was sent to the 'doctor'. The dealer reset the computer (that's what they said). In the process, my Nav. system no longer displays mpg or electric use

Another weird thing was the 'break grease' that needed to be applied. My breaks where 'grabbing'. Been a couple months and I think this grease was worn off! Grabbing again.
