Battery dying overnight on 04 HCH

I live in new york city and I park my car on the streets where on certain days it has to be moved for street cleaners to come through. Otherwise you'll face a penalty of some 45 dollars. In any case, I went into my HCH this morning to move my car and when I tried to start my engine i got no response. At first it had some juice in there but it said I had no gas so it confused me. I thought somebody had siphoned my gas over night, but I saw no damage to my gas cap. So I walk to the gas station and got some gas to put in my HCH. After fillin her up I try again only to fail even more.
At first it showed that my battery had a 3/4 charge but after trying, only to fail, quite a few times it for some reason "drained" my battery. I ended up having to buy cables and getting a ticket because of this.
I'm not sure if anyone else other than me and one other guy I know of to have this problem but is this a type of problem that's reccuring?
I have a 2004 HCH. Please advice.

It sounds like you have a bad battery.
Also be advised if you left the dome lamp on you would have the same type of condition. How often do you drive the car.
Batteries can give out without warning. Most batteries are good for 3 to 5 years depending on use.

I am suddnely having the same problem with my 2003. I have had it in the shop three different times in the past month because of this. I was sure that the battery under the hood had given out, since jumping or charging that battery solved the problem, but the dealer insists that the battery is fine.
They have been unable to replicate the problem in the shop. It will die over night, or sometimes within a few hours after it has been turned off, even though it showed more than half a charge. I will take it to the dealer, it will sit over night, and it starts right up. Take it home. Dead. I finally told my dealer to keep it until it dies. Of course, I still think that front battery is the culprit, although it is VERY inconsistent.
After it happened once, a month ago, it didn't happen again for three weeks, then it happened twice on consecutive days, and now it won't die again.
Has anyone been able to diagnose and resolve this problem?

Due to the inconsistentcy your having, my thoughts would be a sticking relay. The contacts get corroded/burnt and will stick in the applied state at times.

Thanks. The dealer called me today to say that he is "guessing" that is preceisely the problem. I was a bit reluctant to have him do the work, but perhaps we'll take our chances, since he is only charging us for the part $22.

That`s a very fair price. Take it. I don`t know anyone that works for free...

I agree it could be a sticking relay that is causing the problem. Since the radiator fan runs for a while after the key is turned off, it is the mostly likely suspect. Also relays are very easy to change.

So what was the end result....Inquiring minds need to know..

I've started experiencing this same problem starting about 3 weeks ago. One day my IMA light came on. I restarted the car, and it didn't come back on. That night, the batteries drained completely. I had to jump it the next morning. It didn't happen again for about a week, then it happened 2 days in a row. I bought a new accessory battery, and now about 5 days later, I woke up to a dead car this morning. I have been trying to determine a pattern, and it seemed at first it was dying the night after I commuted home on an especially hot day, or wet day. However, yesterday was not the case. The relay sounds like a viable culprit. I will be going to the dealer soon.
Any one else have input before I end up (hopefully not) dropping tons of money on this?

My mechanic (not dealer) thinks its caused by the relay for the A/C compressor clutch. From the little bit I've learned, it sounds plausible since a "battery re-calibration" can occur during use of the A/C system.
He thinks it remains engaged after the car is shut off, draining the battery. And he has replaced a couple of these of non-hybrid Civics.

I have a 2007 HCH, 3000 miles on it. Already had the standard battery replaced when we kept finding the car each morning requiring a navigation system code. IMA battery was low. The dealer replaced the battery, saying that was the cause. Indeed, the car doesn't die overnight anymore. But I don't understand the relationship between the IMA batteries and the regular one. The service mgr says they're "connected" but can't say why, how, and when the connection does anything. He says they "back each other up" but what the heck does that mean?
I notice in these forums several issues around the regular battery and occasionally about the IMA. Anybody know just when one battery goes to work and when the other batteries jump in (aside from the motor assist mechanism itself)?

The batteries are "connected" indirectly through a DC-DC module. Here's a quick breakdown of their mutual dependencies:
-When starting the system the 12V battery powers the IPU (which includes the 158V battery). If the 12V battery is too low then the IMA will not power properly if at all.
-Once the car is ON the IMA system will provide charge to the 12V battery and will implicitly run several of the downstream vehicle components (AC, steering, Etc).
Additionally, if the 12V power is lost, the IMA system will cease to be aware of the State of Charge of the 158V battery. So when you introduce the 12V power again the system will go trough a re-calibration by treating the 158V battery as if it had no charge. You'll notice this as the car will engage in a forced regen until the typical NiMH voltage levels are achieved at which point the SoC will suddenly be at 8 pips.

I left the key turned on in my hybrid. I'm told that you can jumpstart the 12 volt battery that turns on the computer board. Can this be done safely with out it hurting the computer board?

Yes. Just follow the hook-up directions indicated on your user's manual and it will be fine and safe.
