Auto mileage rollover on tripmeters?

I bought my 2004 HCH in April of 2005. After about 3000 miles, I deciced to Use trip meter B to maintain a running record of mileage for the life of the car (I zero trip meter A
at every fillup). Three weeks or so ago meter B had about
8700 miles on it and a MPG indication of 46.1. But when I checked it yesterday, it showed the usual 46.1 MPG, but a mileage total of only 76. Trip meter A showed about 320 miles (since the last fillup) with A MPG indication of 50. Meter B continues to behave as though it had the old high mileage value (i.e., it responds very slowly to changes in MPG shown on meter A).
So what happened to the 8500-odd miles previously stored
in meter B? If I had inadvertently zeroed it, it should be showing roughly the same MPG as Meter A. Is there some
automatic roll-over associated with the trip meters?

David:
I've heard of several reports concerning the rolled-over trip meters - yes they do occur. This was also an issue (almost as similar) for the HCH-II (early 06 models) and it was "corrected" with a simple software update.
It would be interesting to see if a similar update is available for your HCH-I. Is there a chance that you may inquire with a local dealer? ;)
Obviously, there are also those folks who will say that trip meters are just that, and that they should not be used for "life mileage" tracking. Especially since the HCH-I reported consumption will differ from the actual consumption calculated at the pump. I guess this remains debatable.
Good luck;
