Are Batteries recycled or dump?

The one question I keep getting from friends who want to nit pic about the Prius is how green is it really? Uses less gas. Sure. 80 fewer emissions Yes. Ah, But what happens to that toxic battery when it must be partially or fully replaced? Does it contribute to pollution or are they able to recycle components etc?
