Anybody Ever Change Their Air Filter?

I was changing my air filter (and my cabin filter) yesterday when a funny thing happened, and I was wondering if anyone else has seen this occur. In order to remove the air filter housing cover, I needed to disconnect the intake hose, and an electrical connection that I think was for the mass air flow sensor. When I replaced the cover and reconnected everything (double checking that everything was properly connected) and started my car, the amber engine sybol was illuminated. The owners manual said it indicates something with the emmissions system was not functioning properly. I thought it might be intermittent, so I turned off the car and re-checked all the connections again. Then I started the car and drove it for a couple of miles. The symbol was still lit. Then I realized that maybe I just needed to reset the sensor, so I disconnected the negative battery terminal cable (I probably should have done that in the beginning). After about a minute, I reconnected the cable and started the car. The engine symbol was gone, but my hybrid battery indicator had zero bars (one minute previous it had 6 bars). The engine immediately started charging the battery, and I drove the car for about 5 minutes and it was back to normal.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Did I do something wrong? The car is running fine now, with no noticable change in MPG, but I'd like to understand what happened.
Thanks.

Oh, I forgot to add that my car is a 2006 HCH II.

I've removed and reinstalled the air filter housing (undoing that electrical connector atop the air cleaner housing in the process), and did not get any warnings. Could be something in the cabin filter replacement? Or a loose connection? I do know doing something like disconnecting the negative battery lead will result in display of zero charge state, for the first little while.
