Altima ripp off

Created March 17, 2007, at 12:59 am by dandrew

I went to look at the new Altima Hybrid in Alhambra,CA and they had 3 different packages and next to the sticker pricing was a smaller dealer sticker price and all the Hybrids had a 8,000.00 dealer mark up. anyone else seen this kind of mark up? Andrew

Hi,
Look 3 threads down--"I took the plunge."
If you want one looks like you can get one.
8K dealer markup eh. Well it IS their car but they would NEVER get my business.

I went to Anthony Mendoza at Empire Nissan in Ontario. Nice simple deal. $1000 off of list. Boom. Done! Completely painless!

hybrid demand isn't that high right now. i would say you got ripped off if you paid sticker nevermind a mark up

I just bought my Altima Hybrid July 28th. Negotiated down to the dealer invoice (according to Edmunds) with the convenience package. I ended up buying the extended warranty because it is new technology for Nissan and expect to keep the car a long time. I'm tracking several metrics on the car at my blog below. If you would like to track something specific, I'd be happy to start.

My wife and I bought our new Altima hybrid on 8/18/07 from Capistrano Nissan (California). We drove an extra 41 miles (local Nissan dealer 10 miles from our home could not match the Capistrano deal) to save $333.00. The vehicle had Conv.pkg., Floor mats, Aluminum kickplates. We were very satisfied with the sales team at Capistrano Nissan (they have contacted us twice since the purchase). We saved a total of $1977.00 off the dealer invoice which includes the factory $1000.00 rebate.
I suspect there are even better savings available as the 2008 season gets closer. We did not purchase any of the extended service contracts as I felt the current warranties should be adequate as the Altima drivetrain and Toyota HEV package have all been quite reliable.
We have yet to fill up the gas tank and my wife has been driving about 50 miles/day.
I do enjoy driving this car and we like the styling over the competition. My only disappoint is that we could not buy a leather seating only package. Maybe this will change for 2008 models.

Wow...I had a COMPLETELY different buying experience from this same dealer when I purchased my NAH the last day of June this year. They tried a little bait and switch on the financing first and they have never called me back about the car, not one single time! When I purchased mine there was no rebate in effect but my out-the-door price was about $1200 under list as I refused to pay extra for the non-sense add-ons they had put on the car already. I also was taken aback by the huge price jump just to get leather seating and the bluetooth accessory so I only have the convenience package as well. I like the car but my gas mileage to date has not exceeded 30MPG on any tank, much worse than I had expected. My best mileage has actually been on longer drives to San Diego and back rather than around town which is contrary to the mileage ratings. Also I chose not to spend money on the extended warranty due to the extra warranties already provided especially for the hybrid. My past experience with Nissan cars has been great with no problems to speak of so hopefully this one will also do well. I am concerned about how the engine seems to scream when you accelerate hard or climb local hills though, it just sounds like the engine is straining due to the CVT hookup. So far my most consistent gas mileage is only 27-28MPG driving mostly alone in the car. Have you had your first oil change yet? Any other input will be greatly appreciated! Enjoy!

I got mine from Poway Mossy Nissan in San Diego. I realized that the whole San Diego is monopolized by Mossy Nissan. But they do offer good price. I got mine around 7/27, with no added option $22900 + tax. Which is quite some discount, I am satisfied overall, except the sales guy was kind pushy but we bought it anyway. I am getting about 36 MPG last fill up, but this fill up I am getting only 33, I am wondering why. Also I need some feed back on oil change as well?

I just purchased NAH this evening from Vacaville Nissan(Northen California) for $22,400+fees. Invoice was $25,996 and MSRP $27,875.
It come with convenience package(F01), moon roof(J01), splash guards(B10) and 4-Piece carpeted floor mats(L92).

I deal direct with internet/fleet manager DJ.

Great deal that you got. I paid $23415 (Plus fees) which included the convenience pkg F01, floor mats L92 and kickplates P93 (also got the splash guards as they are standard on the hybrid), plus 3750 mile service for free and full tank of gas (most likely everyone gets this). I also noticed that mag wheel locks were included and wonder if this was standard or something the dealer included at no charge.
My mileage has been between 29 and 36 mpg. The best mileage was on a trip to Arizona. Coming back to San Diego, we were in 115 deg. temp and traveling between 80 -83 mph. Mileage with that tank was 33.6 mpg. The car ran nice the whole time. When we were climbing long grades up to Northern Arizona we had ample passing power. My son was following in his 2005 4 cyl. altima and could not stay with us on the climbs. When a car would speed past, our hybrid had no problem staying with them with power to spare. We also have a 1998 maxima (our second one) and this car easily out performs it (200 hp vs. 190 hp).
I hope this lasts and the mileage needs to improve around town.
Have fun with you new hybrid.

Wish all customers were that easy ... grand off , let the dealer make a little , everyone is happy ... people will pay sticker or close to it for a Camry, which has more markup , but will grind Nissan dealers , playing one against the other for $50 less even if he is already under invoice and strecthingg to make a deal ... is $500 really too much to pay for a car ... Collin , you come see me next time - you sound like a great customer ...

Most dealers are happy to show you the invoice for a car , and they all pay the same ... your local dealer is usually the best place to go - he hopes to get service for your car , too ... is it really asking too much to "let" a dealer make a little ... what is astounding is people will pay retail for jewelry that is marked up 500% or more , or for clothing that is marked up 400% or more , but balk at paying a car dealer a 2-3% profit ... believe it or not , people give more profit on a pair of shoe at Nordstrom's ... somehow that just doesn't sound right < chuckles here > ...

it's a business, i understand. i just try to get either carsdirect.com's price or if that isn't good, just a certain amount off. i got $1500 off for my NAH with tech package. dealer made $1000 + holdback. i think this was fair for the both of us

what about shirts? even at old navy the markup is like 1000%

Got my first foreign and hybrid car the same day. Picked mine up in Petaluma, CA. Got my Precision Gray Frost w/ conv. package and kick plates for $22,750. I'm loving it so far, but then again I've only got 250 miles on it, oh yeah and over 1/2 a tank left. I'm loving the MPG.

I got mine for $23,707 OTD from Team Nissan Oxnard. No convenience package.

Have offered $22,500 for a NAH with convenience package, aluminum kick plates and floor mats. Sounds like this is about the best anyone has gotten. Should I try for lower with the $1500 factory rebate now?

i see that the invoice price for what you said was 25,392. subtract 1500 for the rebate and you are at 23,892.

22500 for that is awesome, i'd jump on it (you can haggle more, but for 2 hours of haggling, i don't think you will be getting more than a couple hundred dollars off)

I bought my NAH from a broker in Hayward, CA and saved about $2K. This car is loaded with every feature, and I am really enjoying driving. I actually like it more than my BMW! The car does have guts to go faster when needed, and has been in the high 30s mileage wise.

I find that I adjust my driving to get the maximum mileage. For example, I will try to hold a constant speed on highway (love to see the orange bar in the 60 mph range!). I also keep constant at the lower speeds through the business park and allow the car to roll to a stop vs. flying and then braking.

What I get a kick out of is how the car is turning heads. No one can believe that this gorgeous, luxurious car is a hybrid. Nissan has found the right formula!

I don't actually think this is a rip-off, since I think I got a pretty good deal ($21k OTD for the basic car, including the extended warranty and coating for the fabric since I have kids who seem to spill, and I didn't want to pay for the everything package just to get leather). This is my commuter car, and I'm getting about 37 MPG over the first 4 fill-ups and 2500+ miles (that's my own calculation. The car's computer thinks it's getting 39 MPG. Not sure why there is the difference, but I figure it'll even out over time).

But after only 2 months of ownership, the car is back at the dealer for a week because they are telling me that one of the hybrid cells is bad, and that drained the 12V battery. Anyone have longer term experience with their NAH? I like the car, but I want it to be a dependable car.

DDC says:

So it turns out that it wasn't the hybrid battery that was the problem. It was the 12V battery that wasn't holding a charge. While it's not a hybrid problem, because it's a special battery, the dealer didn't have them in stock and needed to order it. In any event, I'm somewhat relieved that it wasn't a hybrid battery problem, but any problem like this in the first 2 months of ownership is a concern to me. Again, if anyone has longer term experience they'd like to share, it'd be appreciated.
